Title: looking at new Connie
Post by: Rocket Therapy on August 13, 2012, 04:00:12 PM
Hi my name is John and at the present I'm riding a 07 Triumph Rocket III Dynoed at 148 HP and 142 lb torque, I love the bike. anyway I've been eyeballing the 2012 Connies and I think I'm about to pull the triger on one. The more I research them, the more I like em. I've read about putting risers on and maybe changing exhaust, (muffler) to start, I was wondering what the pros and cons were of owning a Connie, likes, dislikes, things I may want to be aware of, and where is a better place to learn then on a C-14 forum right???

I was thinking about a Connie when I bought my Rocket, just didn't  get a chance to ride one before test riding the Rocket.
Anyway I hope to hear from some of you and maybe one day I will be on here also, I know the R3 forum you can't beat for the wealth of info

thanks in advance

   John

Oh yes, this is a super forum with tons of great info and very interesting people.  My suggestion would be to use the search option first... there are numerous interesting threads about people researching the Concours.  Might take a while to dig through it, since there is no obvious search term to use in this case.

Your one question is very general.  So here is a very general answer from my observations:

Positives:  The C-14 is a fast, comfortable, smooth, quiet, feature-packed, reliable, low-maintenance, nice looking, fuel efficient, affordable bike with an excellent warranty and lots of aftermarket addon's available.  It has excellent handling for a bike of it's size.  The shaft drive is extremely convenient and works well, as does the 6 speed transmission.  The brakes are powerful and ABS and traction control both really work.  Offers great weather protection.

Negatives:  No factory cruise control, the keyless system is a bit strange (some like it, some hate it, others don't care), probably should have had a larger gas tank, is a bit heavy/large (but that is the class for this bike), no factory HID, no LED except for brakes, wimpy horn, some maintenance tasks are difficult (like getting to the spark plugs).  Some people do not like the linked brakes.

Other: Most any negative can be fixed with mods or aftermarkets, and nothing can even come close to the overall package at the price.

Welcome John. The Rocket has monster torque #s. The C14 is a much different riding style. Test one if you can. They're not for everybody. Search the forum. Most questions have been discussed at length. Some beat to death. If you get one ride it for awhile before spending on mods and upgrades. What fits one might not fit another. Are you going to keep the Rocket or retire it to stump pulling? I've not ridden one but it must be a grinner.

I can't think of any dislikes..except that it always wants to go faster even when you don't.  It's never satisfied.

I rode a Rocket once, LOVED the stump pulling torque. Very different riding position. Before my C14 I rode a Honda Valkyrie. The Valkyrie is very similar riding position to the Rocket. It took some getting used to and bringing the grips on the C14 up and back before I felt comfortable. Now I have done 900 mile days on the C14 and love it. Definitely ride one before pulling the trigger. If you bring your Rocket to Colorado Springs I'd love to switch bikes for a few hours and and put 100 miles on them.

The mad pow-ah of KiPass will never even out.  It keeps some runnin' relentlessly and perhaps has been accused of shutting others down hard. But the pow-ah cannot realistically be ignored  (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/bigthumb.gif)

Ha Ha, I just read this and went out and checked my horn for the first time. What the hell is that!!! Time to upgrade that thing!! On a side note, I just found out that I have hazard lights too!! Hey, don't beat me up to bad, I've only had it for 3 days. I guess I should finally sit down and read the manual front to back.  :-\

Hey Steve, take a look over on the COG forum- Bob is spewing about KiPass again but this time it is my turn. Kinda funny. Maybe you should post that Barbie / fob photo in that thread right about now.... Just kidding, Bob would probably blow a gasket and then his wife would have to clean up the mess.

I came from a M109R (another stump puller) and absolutely love the C14.  I do miss the torque of the 109 but that is something that a couple thousand more revs can take care of with the C14.  If you ride one don't be afraid to wring it out, nothing but smooooooth useable power.

Very first "Farkle" I added, after lowering the bike/seat to make it possible to ride.  I consider it an essential safety upgrade.

I know most will recommend the Stebel Nautilus, and while this is a worthy choice, there is a 'new kid' on the block.
The Banshee horn is also an ear bleeding 139 decibels, but also incorporates a headlight modulator with it. You
can read about it here:  http://screaming-banshee.com/banshee-horn-warning-system (http://screaming-banshee.com/banshee-horn-warning-system)
You can purchase just the horn, or just the modulator, or both combined on the 'Full systems", and now they offer something
called the 'Screamer", which I don't know enough about.. Maybe it disintegrates the vehicle in front of you.. who knows..

I bought my wiring harness from Murph's kits, I just checked his site and he only shows the HF-80 harness.  I'm sure if you contact him he could point you in the right direction.  Amazon usually has the best price on the Stebel Nautilus.

This is good advice. Coming from a VTX and a Valkyrie 6,000 rmp was high revs. The C14 is just getting started at 6K. It took me a bit to get used to spending time in the 7-10K range.

Yeah, the OEM "horn" is scary. I upgraded mine and got the horns from Murph's. I used his wiring harness but extended them because I needed more length to mount the relay where I wanted. here is the thread pertaining to it: http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=8845.msg107946#msg107946 (http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=8845.msg107946#msg107946)

I just cruised into a triumph dealer. My brother is in the market for a new bike, and he was looking at Victory Cross Roads, HD Steet Glide, and the Vulcan Voyager or Vaquero. Someone told him about the Rocket III Touring- so we went to take a look. I was shocked to discover that bike has 140ci or 2300cc! I was like, how much power does that triple have? Unfortunately the dealer didn't have a demo, but geez that bike was big. I thought the Concours was powerful - and she is, but I guess it's a different kind of power delivery.

Hey everybody look- new guy said the <k-word> and he does not even own one yet!

 ;D ;D ;D

KiPass... ah, what can I say. You should do a forum search on 'KiPass' but take a tranquilizer and have a drink first, it is going to be a rough ride. It's got thrills, chills and spills. KiPass is far more than the sum of its components, it is a true legend that surpasses all other aspects of both motorcycling as well life as we know it.

OK, on a serious note: KiPass is a remote authentication system unique to the Kawasaki C-14. You carry a fob on your person and when you are within about 5 feet of the bike, you can start / unlock / open the saddlebags, fuel tank or seat lock (by using the key formerly locked in the ignition switch) at will. It is a Mitsubishi system and [he says while wearing a flack jacket and asbestos underwear] very well  overall. Some people like it, some people do not like it. A few people hate it and a few people love it. Most people don't really have a strong opinion either way but KiPass is the single biggest emotion generating device found on a C-14.

Be wary now though because Kirby the KiPass Maskot may be along to weigh in on this issue and he is just about immovable in his stance on KiPass (and everything else)- you might say he is rigid to a fault. Don't let the little guy offend you though, he really has contributed a lot to our overall knowledge of the bike.

Wow, just imagine, someone's first time getting introduced to KiPass.

<ROFLMAO> two times.

Just to be absolutely sure you guys understand, we are just having a couple of chuckles about KiPass, not anything directed at you personally and nothing intended to insult or belittle anyone. It is just that KiPass has been such a hot topic in the past that those of us who have had our C-14s for a while and participated in this forum for a while generally find it pretty amusing.

Hang around here for a while and hopefully it will amuse you folks as much as it amuses the group generally.

Yeah, like I said just the other day on the other forum... Having Cap'n Bob explain KiPass is like having Captain Ahab teach someone how to fish....

Funny thing but there was just a rash of KiPass postings on the other forum in the last few days. The usual complaints:
I pried a boulder out of my backyard with the stove knob key and now it won't come out of the ignition!

It is easier to reach into my pocket, fumble with a bird's nest of keys and slide the small key out of the fob than it is to reach all the way to the front of the bike for the stove knob key.

And that favorite old standby- I nearly had a fatal KiPass incident but I am such a genius I figured out how to outsmart it! I took the key out of the fob and held the fob against the bump in the ignition and the bike started! (like the instructions in the owner's manual clearly state).

Brian

I wonder if we could get the cap'n to take'em to school?

300 more for the 2012? That's a no brainer. When you trade it in later, it will be more than $300 you will recoup. When you ride the 2011 off the lot, it magically turns into a two year old.

That is all very true, however it won't be BLUE  unless you get the '10.

So let's sum it up,(A) save $600 (at least, and you should be able to do better $, and make sure it's an ABS model),(B) you get a BLUE C14, and (C) you don't have to ride around in public on black wheels.  That would be win-WIN-win!

All years of C-14 have black wheels, at least a black front wheel, if you use '08 / '09 front brake pads. It only takes about 15 minutes.... Great pads, lots of grab but I would not have believed that pads that last so long could make so much dust. Put another way, 10 oz. worth of brake pads seem to make 300 lbs. of brake pad dust- it is like magic.

My wheels are getting really beat up and I am thinking about painting them a medium- dark, steel gray. That ought to annoy about everyone but I think it would be a good color for the silver (which in '08 was really gray in my opinion) bike.

I think that would look great Brian, my dad did his wheels on one of his cars in that color and it looked very cool, kinda like a gun metal color.  8)

You are less than 400 miles from Sport Cycles of Rockingham, NC.  Got my 2012 there in May for $12900.  Flew over and rode it home.

If you ever have gotten on your bike with your gloves already on and realize you left your bike keys in your pocket, you will appreciate KiPass.  ;)

I'm 53 years old and have had so many bikes looking for that Holy Grale. Cruisers to VFR to ST1300, Vstrom etc. List is too long. I love the Suzuki Bandit but when I followed the Concours from 2008 model to the second gen 2010 I was hooked. I bought my 2011 last August and I will honestly say that I have found my perfect bike. It's not for everyone but it is for me. My cousin has alway rode BMW for the last 40 years and they are fantastic bikes however I have rode his many times (R1200RT - 2009) and it's great but not for me. I like the inline 4 and the sound and feel. I just love this bike and if it were stolen or lost to me in any fashion, I would buy another one right away.

Demo one and that will tell you right away.

Cheers, Dave

That is all very true, however it won't be BLUE  unless you get the '10.

So let's sum it up,(A) save $600 (at least, and you should be able to do better $, and make sure it's an ABS model),(B) you get a BLUE C14, and (C) you don't have to ride around in public on black wheels.  That would be win-WIN-win!

^^^^^^plus the blue ones are chic magnets and go faster

Well I haven't nailed down a concours 14 yet but I've been taking all of the aftermarket parts I put on the rockets and I'm going to put them on the r 3 site for sale in I'm going to put the original equipment parts back on the rocket. Those parts include jardine exhaust p c 3 passenger floorboards solo seat and front fly screen. I really want to ride a concours and see what it's like I hope I like to ride as much as I do the specs. Not sure what I'll be getting but I know the rocket is going

You're about 1 1/2 hrs from me. I'm on the pa side of MD/PA border. There is Ridersville Cycle in Berkeley Springs. Great dealer.... I bought a 2010 Polaris 850 Sportsman Touring from them and a little Outlaw 50 for my son. Their service work.... I don't care for. Not sure if they have a C-14 right now. Their is Twigg Cycles in Hagerstown MD and I know they have a 2012 black as I just saw it last week. I've bought a 2009 V-Storm 650 from them new and it was a great experience. Their service dept is top notch. I've had everything there.... 2 atvs and 3 bikes. You'll have to have a deal pretty much in hand from somewhere else for them to come down to as they are a little tough negotiating with... I gave them a shot on the big Polaris in 2010 but they couldn't come close to ridersville otd price but on the Wee Storm they matched them.

If you give Twiggs a call... Ask for Keith. Great group of guys really and the owner is a fantastic... Not afraid to get his hands dirty and help out kind of guy.

I bought mine from Ridersville, great transaction.  Highly recommended and I do not think you will beat their pricing.  Sport Cycle in Rockingham, NC is on the same level.

Thanks Jimmy Patriot,

I tried Ridersville, no C-14 in stock, wasn't good on price either,  I tried them on another bike a few months ago and the price was good but the PR was at the bottom of the barrel. I'll have to try Twigg in Hagerstown and be sure to talk to Keith, thanks for the reply

I went to Sport Cycles in Rockingham, NC today to check on what they had regarding their Connie inventory. They no longer had any 2011 models, but had  one black and one red(?) 2012 models on the floor. The red one was sold and was being picked up today. I asked if they had any red ones out back. Wrote a check for one still in the create and will be picking it up next weekend (damn, a whole week with no sleep). Price was $12798.  :chugbeer:

Very nice price. My local dealer here, Twiggs, has a hard time selling sport tourers. Theyve been sitting on the c-14 a while as well as a FJR and even an ST 1300...and recently sold a VFR 1200 after over 2 yrs on the floor. They sell lots of goldwings and sportbikes and some metric cruisers but the local market wants Harleys or sportbikes and goldwings. An even tougher sale around here are nakeds. They have a CB 1000 for a long time now that I would love to steal from them.

Yea, I actually went there with the black Connie in mind. I was surprised to here myself ask if they had a red one out back.

Good deal!  If you want any OEM accessories negotiate now.  They offered to sell me parts at 20% off.  You might could do better.

Will do. Hope to take advantage of that. Just a 2 hour drive for me, so not too bad. Will be driving my 07 M109 ( hate to give it up) down on Saturday and coming back home on the Connie. Can't wait!

Well that new C 14 is 3 weeks old now and has 1700 miles on it. This is no commuting just riding when I get a chance but I can't seem to stay off of it. I told my girlfriend I had the saki fever she didn't understand till  I told her it was the kawasaki fever. so far I have 2 inch risers, MCL'S  peg lowering kits, projek D radiator guard, T Rex sliders, M C enterprises front and rear cages, Murph's highway pegs, I am loving this bike.
