I'm thinking about painting my 09 Connie in the 2012 ZX14R green, should I or shouldn't I? Let me know your thoughts and feedback....
If you're not familiar with the color it can be seen below on this clip I found, about 1 minute in it shows some close up shots of the heavy metallic in it, in person it really pops IMO!
I think with everything else that I've powdercoated black on my Connie it might look pretty good, I'm on the fence though...
My current bodywork is in mint condition, but over the past couple days I've built a list from ebay to get all the body panels and tank for about $1500 (some items with surface paint scratches but no cracks/dents and all mounting tabs in tact), that way I could save the oem black body if I wanted to switch back later or swap back and fourth...
For Sale! 2012 Kawasaki ZX14R Ninja Golden Blazed Green (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoeRX9h3Oiw#ws)
In case you haven't seen it here is what my Connie currently looks like...

Hell yes, do it J!
How awesome would that be? Leave it green when you're feeling fast but when you want to feel slow, change it back to black! :)
That metallic is so sweet!
-
Hell YEAH!!!!!! The green is really sweet, better than the drab offerings for the Connies.
A fellow COGer and I were talking about this the other day. He has a C10, and I believe it is a wineberry red, just pure sweet!
Even the blue and the new Arabian red are still drab, lackluster. We think what Kawi is trying to say to the LEO's is don't bother with these s/t's go after the flash. Doesn't matter thou, they just want to fill their quotas, and a biker is an easy target. Especially with the power to weight ratio.
Only one problem I see ZG, does green go with gold?
:chugbeer:

Green & Gold, just like Christmas. :)

I was almost ready to hit the NO vote for ya ZG, til I got to the end of your posting. If you are going to keep all your black panels and don't mind spending the $$ for new ones, then HELL YES ..... do it. I would love to have a Connie in that color.
-

Ohlins gold goes with every color! ;) 8)
-
Do I even need to comment? I can always claim Jay was/is green with jealousy at the superior performance properties of Silverdammit ;D I would recomend taking the Lee Parks Total Control Class on the 20th of July in Salem during the BMW MOA Rally ;)

Just thinking that green paint and do the Kawi and Connie badges in black... :)

If mine was used for bling and casual riding it would've been green long ago. Or, if i owned it as a workhouse hi-mileage bike like mine but in all black, I'd have at least "tastefully" trimmed it in lime kawi green such as this bike is trimmed in gold:

Keep the black connie and get another connie and paint it the Ninja Green....it is the most beautiful paint color Kawasaki has ever come out with....gets cheers everywhere I take mine......then you have the best of both worlds...
Later you can put the ZX14r engine in it and really have one of a kind!
Your black is too beautiful to let it go....or just get another set of plastic and paint it green...then every 6 months or so you can swap them out and confuse all your riding buddies!
The green flames are very tastefully done.....and the more you look at them, the more they grow on you! At least on the 14r.

I think that black beauty looks great just the way it is.
-
She's a beauty as it is, but if you can have 2 sets of plastic, go for it!!! It will look so sweet!!

Are you gonna pack the plastic back and forth to Motosport depending on the time of the month and color preference? ;D
One of these does wonders for a garage too.

I dunno....I like the green, but not sold on the big metal flake. Looks like it should be on a bass boat, not a motorcycle. If you could add white & purple accents ala ZRX, it might tone the flake down and make it more liveable.
-
That paint job looks even better in person....I say go for it.
-
As soon as I saw that Golden Blazed Green I knew what color I wanted my '09 to be!
Faster color or not, I do enjoy my 14 in Metallic Diablo Black!
If you got the funds, go for it! :-)
-
I voted to paint it, but I'm not sure. Your bike had that black and gold look thats so nice. The high end suspension really shows up now.
I'm goign to paint my saddlebags like a soccer ball. It will be easier for my wife to kick them in a black/white color scheme.
-
I used to think I'd like mine ZX-14 green, however I'm not so sure now. While I love the color on the X-14...I love the Black on my C14.

Ohlins Gold and Kawi green, sounds like Packers colors eh Mike? ;) :chugbeer:

Straight line bike, its got $60K including drag racing/top speed competition suspension and quite a nitrous system.
But yeah I can't disagree, I lean my bikes and OHLINS is second to none.
And I was pointing out trim on black. NO bike will beat your fork setup OF COURSE :D :D :D
-
Definitely do it, with a second set of plastic you can swapsies whenever you want AND paint over the green in another colour if you get bored of it down the track.
-
One more thing to paint on each side of the green blingbling bike...a matching picture of a PIMP ;D

I think that your blacked out bike looks great, but I love that green. Would you be getting a second fuel tank, too?

Great question, the ZX10 looks good green with black tank too

-
Would you be getting a second fuel tank, too?
Yep, the approx $1500 # includes another tank as well.
-
$1500
That's pocket change. Why not go for it.
Steve, I dig the looks of that ZX10.
-
Do Silverdammit and spend more time riding and less time polishing ;D
-
And if you are feeling confused you could leave one side black and the other side green. Kind of Jekyll and Hyde. ;D

It purchased for the guide peg and the position improvement. <br>That a description attaches quite incomprehensibly (brake side) took time for a while. <br>After wearing, the motion of a pedal became good and the feeling when stepped on also became quite good. <br>Since the position had also been improved with the guide peg in question, it was very much satisfied. <br>The description became brave to a slight degree, and when the price was cheap to a slight degree, evaluation was 5 rightly.

The thing I like about my black Concours with stock exhaust is when I came a little hot into a town and noticed the two officers leaving the diner and getting into their patrol car. They never saw or heard me.
The thing I don't like about my black concours with stock exhaust is that the cars around me don't see or hear me.

Well.... I think I'm gonna go ahead and do it. (http://i1200.photobucket.com/albums/bb336/jaywilcox/swiqe.gif)
I just pulled the trigger on the first piece, $180 shipped for a tank, no dents or rust and paint ready, too good to pass up. :-\

Looks like my weekend will be spent buying used body parts off ebay from my list, if anyone has any 1st gen body parts (no cracks, no deep rash, and mounting tabs in tact let me know ASAP). :chugbeer:
FYI on how the project cost came out, sounds like I can do this as a complete 2nd set of bodywork and tank sourced, prepped, painted, and installed, for about $4k... Could be as low as $3k but I won't hold my breath. :-\
Wish me luck on the project brutha's, I'll be sure to post up as the project takes shape. :chugbeer:

I have this same issue C. Scuffed the bag a few months ago and nobody notices but me.
I have to tell myself the same thing when I see a scratch on my truck. "It's a TRUCK!"

I was trying to find some pics of the ZX14R green color along with everything else on a bike blacked out and came across this...
Please don't comment on this bike itself, he must have crazy $ into it, and no I am not a fan of the massive rear tire...
But please just focus on how the green color looks along with the black wheels and everything else blacked out on the bike, which is how my bike is, I think it looks pretty dang good. 8)

Jay, I think the green and black will look fantastic. I don't care for greens that tend to the yellow spectrum. Good luck with the project.

So far so good, I'm already ahead of budget, this weekend between ebay and forum members I've been able to get the below parts (a complete body minus mirrors
and right side bag lid) coming to me and I'm only at $1180 so far. :)
tank
front fender
battery door
small middle piece on rear for tail
upper center fairing
left small wing that mounts to mid fairing
right small wing that mounts to mid fairing
right mid fairing with the vents
right mid fairing flat
left mid fairing with the vents
left mid fairing flat
left tail side
right tail side
left side case lid
right side case lid
I'm still in need of left and right mirrors and left and right side bag lid.
If you have any of these please let me know. No cracks, no deep rash, and mounting tabs in tact only please, I'm ok with scuffs/scratches in the paint as long as they aren't too deep.

Ok guys, so what do you think I should do about the badges?? :-\
Should I re-apply new 1st gen C14 Kawi and Connie badges?
Should I just do the Kawi badges?
Should I do the Kawi ZX14R badges? (they are more of a light gun metal color, not the mirrored look of the stock C14 badges)
Should I do the badges in black? Do them in another color?
Should I do the 2nd gen Connie badges? (2nd gen Connie badges are individual letters like the Kawi badges, the 1st gen Connie badges are all connected together)
No badges at all?
:feedback:
-
I know it is a Yamaha, but I like the old school 2 strokes. If I had the money to do a custom paint job on my Connie I would copy a Kenny Roberts RZ350.

Seriously, don't put any ZX14 badges on it, that screams POSER. I'd go with the 1st gen badges in black, or none at all.

I never watched the movie "Treasure of the sierra madre". But all my life I've heard the famous line "we don't need no stinking badges". But now I find out they never said that line. Instead the line is "I don't have to show you any stinking badges". Learn something new everyday. Thanks Conrad!

I wouldn't put "ZX14R" badges on it goofball... ::)
I'm talking about the "KAWASAKI" badges from the ZX14R, they look/say the same but are just a different color, more of a lighter gun metal color instead of the mirrored chrome look. :-\

Hey ZG,
I think you should consider sending the saddlebag lids to Corbin for their slim door mod that makes the saddlebags slimmer. Then the Green would be for your around town cool look and the black for distance travelling. I think that mod is really cool, but won't work with my saddlebag guards.

If I were going to spend the bucks for 2 sets of bags that's exactly what I would do. The OEM side cases are way too useful and practical for long range touring to remove but they do give the C14 a fat A$$. And I need them for around town for rain gear and small errands. Corbin had a great solution.

My paint shop just ordered up the paint, activators, & reducers etc from Color-Rite. $500. :)
I also bought both R&L side case lids today. All I need now is the mirrors, worse case I'll just order up a set of new black ones and paint mine...
Looks like I should have everything to the painter by mid next week and have everything done and installed around the end of February...
 :chugbeer:

I'd go with the 1st gen badges in black, or none at all.
I'm thinking instead of the Concours14 badges on the tail sides finding some place to make me some custom one off's that say ZG Limited Edition, or something to the like... :-\
-
Badgeless, leave em guessing, or better yet, badge it ZG1000RR Limited Edition ;D

:o
I wouldn't put "ZX14R" badges on it goofball... ::)
I'm talking about the "KAWASAKI" badges from the ZX14R, they look/say the same but are just a different color, more of a lighter gun metal color instead of the mirrored chrome look. :-\
D'oh! Carry on.
-
I never watched the movie "Treasure of the sierra madre". But all my life I've heard the famous line "we don't need no stinking badges". But now I find out they never said that line. Instead the line is "I don't have to show you any stinking badges". Learn something new everyday. Thanks Conrad!
I love the look on that guy's face when he's asked about his badge. :)

Ordered up a set of mirrors today, that now makes a complete body kit with tank and side case lids complete for $1420 shipped. :) 8)
Now I just have to wait for all the parts to arrive next week and get em over to the painter.

I agree. I even chose the black so I could get candy lime accents painted, but when push came to shove I couldn't find a painter I would trust with the project. The black and chrome is growing on me and I can wear any color gear without clashing

So I made a decision on the badges and ordered them up today.
I ordered the Kawasaki badges for the front sides and Kawi 47 trunk lid.
The 10+ Concours 14 badges for the tail sides (the individual letters will show the green through the letters, the solid 08/09 badges won't).
And the 08 ABS stickers for the front fender, the 08's have that sticker in black, the 09's are silver stickers.
My painter is going to paint the Kawasaki and Concours 14 badges in a satin black and then clear coat over the paint.
Many debates in my head but this won out, hope it turns out as good as I in-vision. :-\

What the heck, if it doesn't look just right, you can take the golf cart out to the back yard, pick some 100's off of that gigantic money tree you must have, and start over. ;D

Even ZG, probably the most energetic of the color black supporters, has seen the light and is going green which is mildly faster than black.

The Connie Gods must be inspired by this project, today I scored right and left mirrors and right and left side bag lids that aren't even scratched for only $120 total!! :o
I just called and canceled my order for the new mirrors (which was $240), so now I'm all in with a full body for only $1300 and also now have another set of side case lids to paint as spares or just hoard... ;D

Sometimes drinking and ebaying pays off, or does it? :-\
The guy I just bought the side cases and mirrors from earlier tonight reached back out to me an hour ago to see if I'd just buy his whole set from him for cheap...
A couple ebay pm's back and fourth and 2 phone calls later I seem to have now just purchased a complete nother set of bodywork including tank in 09 black for $570 shipped and it's not even crashed plastics, he changed all his auctions to buy it now while we were on the phone and I bought them piece by piece for 30 minutes... :o

Too good of deal, I just didn't have the will to pass it up, where the heck was this angel a week ago. :banghead:
I don't want to make this thread go off-track but should I just hoard it or have it painted in the Kawi green at the same time to hoard those parts for future or paint them in another color (is 3 sets of bodywork in 3 different colors obsessive?)... The bad, also received the battery door, back center connection between the tail sides, and front left mid with the vents... All 3 pieces are cracked and no good to me, gonna have to try and work these out with the ebay sellers... :'(
Thank goodness I pulled the trigger on the 2nd body set last night, seems I'm gonna be needing some of those pieces after all. :) :chugbeer:

More body parts arrived today, starting to take the shape of a bike now! :)
Right side case lid, right mid fairing, right mid fairing with the fins, left mid fairing, and tank!
Unfortunately the tank has a small ding in it... Reached out the the ebay seller, looks like I'll need to return it for refund. :(
Good thing I've got that extra tank coming, looks like I'm gonna need it. ;D :chugbeer:
A very special thanks to Cap'n Bob, he sent me his left mid fairing from his old C14 and wouldn't even let me pay him for it!! :grouphug: :chugbeer:

Question??
So I'm dropping what body parts I already have off to the painter tomorrow so they can start prepping em, I just pulled off my Corbin smuggler to include in the batch for tomorrow and put mama's Corbin seat on in it's place for the next couple weeks.
Should I have that plastic plate on the back of the Corbin backrest painted in the green or just leave it black?? (http://i1200.photobucket.com/albums/bb336/jaywilcox/confused1.gif)(http://i1200.photobucket.com/albums/bb336/jaywilcox/smiley_dunno.gif)

Tough question, I would say no as it will be higher and almost a beacon. Maybe 2 tone to blend with either set of tupperware?
-
I vote leave it black. It may look overdone if you paint it green and it would look out of place with the black body pieces installed.
-

Well it would be two-tone Chet, that center plastic ring would be green and the outer leather part would be black. :-\
-
it would look out of place with the black body pieces installed.
I'm thinking I could just pick up another black plastic ring from Corbin for when the black bodywork is on? :-\
-
Well it would be two-tone Chet, that center plastic ring would be green and the outer leather part would be black. :-\
I was thinking a fade to black from the center of the oval, maybe subdued green, to tie things in. You could just buy another ring. It's only money, right?? A last option? Chrome it :o
-

+1 Even with the green plastic installed I think that this part would look better black.
-
+2 I would consider leaving the smuggler black also.
-
+ 3!!
-
I don't even know why ZG asked for our opinion, y'all know how his brilliant mind works. ;)
-
+4 on the Smuggler and the backrest oval ..... I would leave them black.
The smuggler is too expensive (for us mere mortals anyway) to buy another one just for color options. With it being black, it will still look great with the green but if it is green, it may look odd when you go back to the blacked out scheme.
-
I don't even know why ZG asked for our opinion, y'all know how his brilliant mind works. ;)

You guys are funnny... ::) ;D
Painting the smuggler trunk was never up for debate, I was always planning on painting it, it's on the bike 98% of the time.
As for the backrest plastic back plate, I just got off the phone with Corbin, they agreed to sell me just that back plastic piece in the black paint like I already have for only $40, so I went ahead and ordered it up and am gonna drop my current one off today to the painter with the other parts. 8)
That way if I like it green great, if I don't then I'll have another black one. Having choices is good! :)
-
Both, I'll take both. :)

Does the smuggler trunk provide better driver backrest support then the Corbin rear seat? With my Horizon ST bars I like to have some lumbar support. The Corbin rear seat does that to an extent. If the smuggler trunk does a better job, then I have 2 reasons to get one.

Just looked at Corbin website. $800 for a smuggler. Ouch!

Nope, I need the space on longer overnight rides OL, which I plan to have a few this summer.
-
Got a couple quick progress pics from the painter today...
They got all the rock chips out of the front fender and the boot & drop scratches out of the side cases, upper and side wings sanded down too. ;D

Did you buy/mix a "true" Kawasaki green or did you pick a color from a chart? The reason I ask is because I've contemplated using a stock PPG color code to repaint my bike. Then, if I ever had to paint an accessory or touch up a section, I could reorder some paint and it would match 100% perfect.
I can't wait to see the green paint in person...

I went with the true Kawi paint kit OL, this particular paint for the 2012 ZX14R "golden blaze green" is a pretty complex color and has an uber ton of metalic flake in it. :)

awesome, ZG. I don't envy money, but having a vision and being able to make it happen... :hail:

Thanks Martin, I've always been a bit of a dreamer when it came to modding my toys, it's nice to finally be at a point in life that I can actually take action on the dreams, better to do it now IMO and enjoy the benifits then hoard my $ so long that I can't enjoy it when I'm old older.

That's cool. If you ever decide to do it again, take a look at the PPG book first. They have a million colors for vehicles of every make and model. Also, they have a lot of exotic/metallic flake colors in their Vibrance collection.
Did you get the paint from Colorite or did you have the code to mixed it up? I had my Givi trunk shot in Colorite Candy Diamond Red, but it wasn't exactly the same.
-
Did you get the paint from Colorite or did you have the code to mixed it up?
Yep OL, the complete paint kit is from Color-rite, it's a 4 level paint process I guess, I called Kawi and they said that Color-rite was the way to buy it. 8)
I used Color-rite for a side case lid on my 06 VFR a couple years back and it was an exact match, it was the 06 black which also had quite a bit of metallic in it, I was very pleased. :)
-
Looking forward to the results!

I guess that explains why the supplies cost so much. Color-rite has a monopoly on the motorcycle paint market and they aren't afraid to gouge their customers. :)
FYIY, black metallic is super easy to match, so it should have been dead on. The green/candy Color-rite formula will be very close to factory but not exact. As long as you're shooting the entire bike, you'll never notice the difference. Personally, I think the Color-rite finishes are much nicer than Kawasaki OEM anyways. The clear coat is definitely less prone to smudging and scratching.
So, how much do you have invested in this project so far? I can pick up a new/used 2013 ZX-14 for ~$12K :p
-
So, how much do you have invested in this project so far? I can pick up a new/used 2013 ZX-14 for ~$12K :p
$1300 for a complete 2nd set of bodywork including tank and side case lids.
$700 for a complete 3rd set of bodywork including tank and side case lids. (TBD on what to do with, hoard for future) :-[
$500 for the paint.
$200 in misc rubber cushions, heat shield, connectors, and new Kawi badges.
Still to come is the actual cost to paint, should be approx $1k.
Still to come the cost of my bike shop swapping everything out and reconnecting misc things like heated gear controls/inputs etc, should be approx $600.
So my guess is I'll come in somewhere in the $5k range all said and done, but I'll also have 3 complete sets of bodywork... :)

The seller was a bike shop in Ohio, he said he'd had it all at his shop for almost 2 years left over from a customers insurance claim. Odly enough he said he listed it all 6 months ago on ebay and never got a single hit, so I guess the timing was just right me this time. :)
-

Abosofreakinglootly. Get a second set, may as well get the rolling stock as well ;D
PS, that pics of all the new tuperware? MSF sells kits like that for training bikes, helps keep them at parking lot speeds, makes em feel like they are riding dads Harley, and no loss of value after they have been down daily :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :yikes: :stirpot:
-
At least another set of wheels in Ohlins gold. I think that might look good while the black plastic is on the bike.
-
Well I just dropped off the last piece today to the painter, I ended up finding a dent free ZX14 tank that was local to me, got it for only $100. 8)
While at the painter looked through all the other parts they've already been prepping, everything is looking great, they were able to get all the scratches out! :)
Some more progress pics for ya... :chugbeer:

Kawi uses the same tank for the ZX14 and the Connie, you can usually pickup used ZX14 tanks for less cost than Connie tanks for some reason, I got this one for only $100 and it is completely dent free. :)

Post away. When we talk of the COG site we almost always call it 'that other forum'. We're not being malicious it's kind of an inside joke.

Sounds like the natives are getting restless here eh, soon guys, soon... ;)
I spoke to the painter on Monday and they had everything prepped and were getting ready to primer, should be seeing some green in the pics soon enough hopefully and I'll definately post em up.

Yep, as Gumby mentioned I had them just tape off everything but that painted triangle section, I thought about trying to remove that piece but heard too many horror stories about folks breaking the tabs trying it, so I opted not to risk it and just tape everything else.

Actually C that will be pretty close to the date of "total" completion I bet, parts should be done I'm guessing mid next week, then about a week to cure a bit, then a couple days for install... I think St. Pattys day is 3/17 right?

I just got home from the painter, I got to look through all the pieces and I must say I am very pleased with the quality of work in the prep stage. Keep in mind that all of these body parts were scratched parts that I sourced off the forums and ebay (with the exception of my Corbin smuggler and Kawi 47 trunk lid). Looking at all the parts very close up I can't even tell where any of the scratches were at all!
The worst scratch was on one of the side case lids, looked like it was keyed before, they did such a good job that I couldn't even remember which side case lid it was on... ???
This is the said side case lid scratch I'm referring to, very deep scratch before indeed. :'(
(http://i1200.photobucket.com/albums/bb336/jaywilcox/P9222686_zps7d6c2799.jpg)
I was hoping to see some green on the parts tonight but I guess they wanted to sand and primer one more time before paint being applied, which is fine by me, quality before timeline I told em! :)
So by the time this is done all the parts will have been sprayed 8 times! :o
Yep... One coat of sealer, 2 coats of primer, 2 coats of green, 1 coat of "Golden Blaze" pearl, and 2 coats of clear.
So for now I guess I just get to wait a bit more, sounds like everything should be ready to pick up by the end of next week... (http://i1200.photobucket.com/albums/bb336/jaywilcox/wait.gif)
They plan on spraying green this weekend but I won't have pics emailed to me until Monday because the front office is closed on the weekends, but once I have em I'll be sure to post em up for y'all! :chugbeer:
Until then, these are the only green body pic's ya get from me tonight. ;D

On a side note, most people don't know this is the same girl that played,"Bat Girl/Commissioner Gordon's Daughter" on the old Batman TV series.

So the painter spoke with Color Rite and were recommended to do a coat of white under the green to make the paint brighter and really pop! So I guess it will end up now being 9 coats total. :o
Brighter is better on this particular green, so a coat of white we go!! ;D

After watching that video, for some reason I'm now hungry for brisket, hot links and ribs.

That is going to look awesome.
-
ZG, you should do a dyno run on the bike while it is still black. Then do another when you put the green skins on. Then we will know for sure which is the faster color ;D
-
Back when I used to do a lot of painting, I always used silver or gold under candy colors, but they may have suggested white, to get a specific shade of green to stand out. It's going to rock, Man.
-
Looks great.
It'll be neat to watch the development of the color from 1st coat to last.
-
Wow,
I havent been around the forums for a while.. Things must be really slow around here. I can remember when someone would do their own project on their C14 like Fretka turboed his from scratch, designing and engineering it himself. Or Brian designing and working out the bugs on a cruise control unit. That he improved upon. Showing pics along the way..
Even some members that painted their own bikes and other custom work..
But really??
20+ pages on two forums on plastic bought on Ebay and painted green by some paint shop? Hell the owner didnt even touch a piece of sand paper. Till its done almost two months of jabber.. Why not just have it painted and show pics of the finished product when its all done for all to oogle over?
You can do anything if you have enough money... I guess. Some people really love riding these motorcycles... But hey, if being a forum (or two) attention whore is more your thing... More power (or is it powa) to you...
Rant over

No, Jay, not jealous... Or an attention whore, MrPipsqueak... After 6 years on this forum if I see a thread with over 20 pages I thought it was worthy reading.. My mistake, it wont happen again..

MrPipsqueak...
Ok, now that was funny.
-
Where is my popcorn? Am I in time for the show?

Looks nice Jay, look forward to the finished product.

I have to say, that although ZG is having His bike painted by a shop, He's doing those of us a great service, that have been thinking about doing this ourselves. I've been thinking about painting mine green for some time, and will do it myself. It will definitely aid My decision making process to see His finished bike. The Kawasaki green is a little darker than the GM/Camaro green I'm considering, but it's close enough to give Me some perspective. Because of that, this thread is much more to Me than 20 pages of ooohs and aaahs.
Thanks ZG. I appreciate the thread, and You spending Your hard earned money so I don't have too.
-
What is the saying, "It's the journey, not the destination".
I have no problem whatsoever with the length of this thread or anything else about it. It's been interesting, & I'm looking forward to the outcome (and realize there will prob be MORE pages between now and then ... hopefully more green boobs (without stretch marks) will be posted)

Don't worry about JJ, probably green with envy, and having a bad day. This is an adventure, and for those of us who can't do the things that you are privileged to, let's us enjoy it along the way.

I just got of the tele with Jay and I feel compelled to come to JJs defense. JJ is one of the C14 pioneers and has always been an awesome forum member. FWIW, JJ has put some serious miles on his '08, you will be hard pressed to find another with as many miles.
Peace to all my bro's and sis's.

So, why does he feel he should spoil someone else's day? Or thread? I do my own work on my 14, but so what? Actually, the only thing I don't do is paint, but so what? I also do all my own work on my house, yard, and more, but so what? It's whatever turns your crank and it's all good.
-
- to be honest , felt the same way as JJ there.
- but on reflection , if not for people like ZG , the economy would grind to a blinkin' halt in a heartbeat.
- so , if ZG's happy with the way he's spendin his money , and the shops guys are happy taking his money and turning out work so that they can pay wages and feed their kids , its all good.
- to each his own and nobody is compelled to read anything on this forum.

No one twisted your arm and made you look at "20+ pages on two forums on plastic bought on Ebay and painted green by some paint shop?" did they? It's winter for a lot of us and if we want to live vicariously through Jay's paint project then that's what we'll do dammit!

That was definitely your mistake. Usually, when they go over 3 pages they went off topic. LOL!
I don't remember reading any posts where you designed, engineered, fabricated, finished and installed something.
-
Yes this thread did go off topic quite a bit. But its all in fun and watching a cool project take place regardless who works on the project. Its all good IMHO. 8)

Will do Steve, thanks bro! :) :chugbeer:
And thanks everyone else too, I'm glad you're liking the color so far, trust me it will only get better with the next couple coats. :chugbeer:

Awesome ZG! You are doing what I wanted to do when I bought the bike but I don't know a painter I can trust so I don't want to spend the money.
Can't wait to see it all together.

Jay....
Im thinking we will see your ride on another mag cover! Lookin good bro.

I'd like that as well Jim, one mag cover is good, two is better though right, especially if it looks completely different but is still the same bike! :) :chugbeer:

Here is something I'm curious about. The time the fuel tanks is off the bike, and empty, is there something done to it to prevent surface rust on the inside? I painted a fuel tank years ago, and had a hell of a time with it. The next one I did, I coated the inside with marvel mystery oil before taping it up and starting the paint prep, and that helped, but there was still some rust.

I'm guessing where you live plays a big part in this JM, here in the PNW rust isn't as much of an issue as other parts, the ZX14 tank I bought locally here had no rust thank goodness, but man o man was it haggered on the outside... Dude supposedly put it upsidedown to drain the gas and overnight it fell in the gas which totally killed the paint! :o Lucky for me though it was completely dent free and I picked it up for $100. :)

I'm one of the black is beautiful crowd but these pics are making a convert out of me. NICE!

Seriously, that paint is AMAZING. I can't wait to see it all together with the Ohlins tasty bits sticking out from underneath. It might've been discussed in the previous 23 pages, but what color are you going with the wheels?

You will definitely be easier to spot around town 8) 8)

I'm sticking with my black wheels MJ for the Kawi green bodywork. 8)

Definitely had a chip kit installed. Lots of silicone. Not that they wouldn't be fun to have around....

They look stock. But I've been fooled before.

How does one become an airbrush artist????
I don't want to get this off topic, but a really good friend of mine has a brother that does body painting like that. He makes a REALLY good living at it too. Talk about a dream job ;)
-
How does one become an airbrush artist????
Take a few classes or buy some instructional books and videos from Airbrush Action. (http://www.airbrushaction.com/ (http://www.airbrushaction.com/)). Buy a quality double action airbrushes and then practice practice practice. Find someone in the area that does this kinda work and talk to them to see if they will teach you a few things. Find a local art supply store and see if they know anything about airbrushing.

Absolutley beautiful early March day in the PNW today, blue sky, sunny, and upper 50's... :)
It's supposed to rain all next week, and then the following week she goes in for the Green plastic surgery, so I thought it fitting to give her one last wash and take some photo's, these will most likely be the last photo's you ever see of her with the oem painted bodywork on...

Suggestion, get the stock shield (and the two retainer plates) painted green on the inside to match the rest of the bike. That barn door is gonna look out of balance otherwise.

Ahhh, sorry now I get the question... :-[
I looked for some green ones but no luck so far, Pro-bolt has color options but no green it seems, I'm gonna just rock my black fairing bolts for now, I fgure with as much blacked out stuff I have on my bike I'm hoping it looks ok, definately better than chrome bolts would... :)

I just came from the painter to see the pearl in person... OMG!!! :o
It is absolutely freakin awesome!!! Pics just can't do this paint service at all, there is so much "Golden Blaze" in the pearl it is just stunning! I can't wait to get it on the bike and out in the sun! 8)
Here are some phone pics I took while there, we aimed a light at em to try and capture the golden blaze pearl as much as possible but again the photo's don't pick it up very well, if you zoom in to them though you can hopefully see some of what I'm trying to describe... :-\

Thanks brutha's! :chugbeer:

I told the dealer when I bought mine that I was going to get some Candy Lime Green painted on the bike, but I don't know any competent painters. Man I wish your painter lived near me. The only thing I would hate about having such an awesome paint job is the first time I scuff it.
I saw a new Z1000 in person that is the same color you are painting. It was awesome!
-
Very nice ZG...can hardly wait to see the completed bike.

This will be awesome! My Arabian red seems very drab now.. Maybe one day i will get such a paint job. One of my co-worker is buying the zx14 2013 the black with green inserts. We are planning a lot of little 1 day trip this summer. Can't wait to show off some pics.

With the clear coats, it may not scuff so easy!

Seriously, 10 coats of clear???!!!
I hope you give those parts a month+ to cure before re installing them. Also, use neoprene grommets where they secure because 10 "real" coats of clear equates to about 15 mil in thickness. There's a chance things might not line up perfectly or rub against each other because of the extra thickness. ;D
-

I hope you give those parts a month+ to cure before re installing them. Also, use neoprene grommets where they secure because 10 coats of clear equates to about 15 - 20 mil in thickness. There's a chance things might not line up perfectly or rub against each other because of the extra thickness.
I think that's 10 coats in total, base, color, blaze, clear.
-
I think that's 10 coats in total, base, color, blaze, clear.
C is correct. :)
And actually now that I add it up it was actually 11... :o Sorry, my bad. :-[
1 coat sealer
2 coats primer
1 coat white
3 coats green
2 coats pearl
2 coats clear
-
I think that's 10 coats in total, base, color, blaze, clear.
Aaaah, I see what he's saying. Yeah, base colors and candies are super thin/transparent. They add very little to the thickness. Maybe a couple mils total at most.
When I painted my cruiser, I did 2 coats of clear on everything. It was a mistake because a lot of the parts simply didn't line up perfectly with the extra thickness. Next time I'm only shooting the tank with 2 coats of clear (for extra protection).
Also, FYIY, he probably applied several really thin coats. It's much safer to apply several thin coats if you are working with paint that you're not familiar with.

I am very jealous........I've told my wife I would keep my '10 for several years, UNLESS, Kawi came out with a green C14, at which time I will be the first in line.
I firmly believe that ZG will have one of the most unique and eye-catching bikes on the road. I wish I could see it in person. The ZX in green with the ghost flames is beautiful, but it doesn't have as much surface area as the 14, and I think that will be a huge difference.
-
I'd sure like to see it in person too.
Hey, I've got a great idea! Jay, why not take the bike on a sort of demo tour around the U.S.? We could all meet up with you as you pass through our respective states and ride a ways. That way you can get the mileage up on that beauty queen too!

So, Jay, what day do you anticipate the unveil? Next week is kinda tight for me, but the following week?? I would consider a little road trip to see the Green Goblin in person :)

I'll write up a post have my photographer buddy snap some pics and post right after I go pick up some spinners on'er. Ohhh, I meant take'r for a spin. ;D

Watcha got to bargain with bro? :-\
hehe nevermind but this should command a high price

Hey ZG, could you post a couple side by side pics of the first coat of green and the finished job. Flipping back and forth is not doing it justice and I'm not computer savvy enough to do it myself.
Thanks

Thanks C.
It takes time, that was alot o' plastic to take off, plus they had to do that black nickel upper triple clamp. I was just over there at lunch and they were working on the tank, which means having to swap over all the fuel stuff mounted to the underneath etc...
Cant wait to see her in the sun!! The lighting in the shop is doing her no justice.

Might be hard to find that exact color, but may not need to be perfect. Dunno.

The green against that flat black looks dope! The green just pops out at ya...looks sweet dude!

Looking real good! Just wait until you get it out in the sun. My 2009 Versys had not quite the same green(different paint code and a little more yellow or limier) and it was GREEN. You could see the green color reflecting on all sorts of things (like stop signs) while riding. Green and black is a great combination.

Looks even better than I expected and I'm sure photos can barely even convey how nice it looks in person. Hope to ride with you sometime, maybe we could meet in Montana sometime this year......... that will be right between us since I am moving to North Dakota. I think my C14 is safe for now even if that means living in tent for the time being. Glacier National Park maybe.................... ;)

I think I've just seen the C-14 version of "shoodaben".

Need to get some of those clear TechSpec pads to keep the tank all nice and green.

Well, it looks like I will be the party pooper in this thread, but I don't like it all that much. It is neat looking that it is unique and I am sure it gets a lot of attention, but I will be sticking with my black bike.

Agreed, I was just thinking the same JM! :chugbeer:
-
Awesome! I am very jealous, but very happy for you. 8)
I have both the 10' banner and the 20' Kawasaki banners. I like to hang the big one outdoors on Saturdays when all the Harleys are passing by my property! Just kidding. My wife won't allow my to trash her perfect landscape with a banner. LOL!
The large banner is too big to hang indoors.
-
As some have pointed out the pics that my shop took make the color seem a little lighter/paler then it actually is, it must be a setting on their camera...
I forgot until just now that I also took some pics with my phone when they were taking their shots, same exact lighting but look at the color difference, although my phone pics aren't as nice in quality they are more representative of the color IMO so I'm gonna add em to this thread...

No explanations needed - it's a beautiful color. To many camera lens and screen variables.
-
The bike looks Bad Ass!!!! That's how Kawasaki SHOULD of built it!!!! Kawasaki's are meant to be green.
-
I think it turned out nice. The color is a bit flashy for a Sport Touring bike, but it's definitely not bad...
I'm torn on the Corbin trunk though. Although I like the idea of a solo configuration, I was never a big fan of the Corbin trunk and how it sticks up. In black, it's subtle and blends into the seat. In Kawasaki green, it screams, "here I am".
-
Looks like a sport touring squid bike now!!!!!! :stirpot:

Ok, I tried to get some outside pics from different angles with the different Corbin seating options and trunk options for ya and side cases on/off, typical PNW spring though the sun kept going behind the clouds... :banghead:
It's kinda cool though with this paint you really can tell which pics the sun was out and which ones the clouds blocked it... 8)

The bike looks great! Did you get one of your helmets painted to match?

Thanks TWA, nope I'm stickin with the black Neotec, a green lid won't match when I'm on my Gixxer. 8)

3 sets of plastics and only one helmet? I have 7 helmets that I can think of.

I use to have different lids for each color bike too TWA, but once I got my Scala G4 and HARD kit I consolidated down to one lid, too much of a pain swapping blue-tooth and radar alert light back and fourth... :)

So man up Jay!! Buy 2 more sets of each ;D Throw in a pair of Shuberth Pros and you have it made 8)

I like it! Great project...

Looks good.

ZG ... Most posters have said they like it, love it, or don't ... but I don't think you have. So, how do you like it? Will you be keeping it green?

Yes, I'm very happy with how it turned out, especially with the black badges I think that small detail really added a lot and ties it in nicely with all the other black bits I've had powder coated. :) 8)

Yes I'll be keeping her green at least for now, but I do still have a 3rd set of bodywork that I'd like to also paint in another color, but that will most like be saved for next winters project to give me something to do during crappier weather season...

Any color ideas for that next one? I personally would love to see a beautiful rich charcoal grey. When I was a kid, a doctor in our town had a Ferrari 308 in the most beautiful gray I have ever seen....of course a bright Ferrari red would be nice too! I love google, I found a pic.

I want to give mass props to the paint shop that did this project for me, Artistic Auto Body!
Absolutely awesome quality, attention to detail, and great communication all the way through the entire project! (http://i1200.photobucket.com/albums/bb336/jaywilcox/sdskja.gif)

Thanks MC, and agreed! Always give credit and thanks when due, many will be suprised at how much a small thank you comment or small gift of appreciation means to folks that work hard all day (and for many days) on making things right, these folks at Artistic definately did that for me! :)

I don't know why the Japanese companies don't take a lesson from Harley and offer up more paint choices. Even if I have to order the bike and wait until spring to receive it would be worth not having to drop an extra 2000 on a paint job from some unknown painter. Of course I saved 3000 on the purchase of the '12 connie so if I knew of a good painter I would seriously consider it. Plus, most insurance companies have a policy to cover the cost of the custom paint as an add on to the bike.

Yep, true TWA! I have Progressive insurance and sent them the paint and install reciepts for this project (approx $4k) and just added that to my existing accessory coverage that I already have with them for only an additional $38 a year! :)
-
You could consider incorporating secondary colors/graphics Kawasaki has used over the years:

Yep, I use to have my bikes with State Farm too (we still have our cars, RV, and house with them) but I switched the bikes over to Progressive last Fall because State Farm doesn't offer accessory coverage, and I've got far too much $ into accessories to risk a total loss and only get a check for a stock used C14. :(
FWIW I now have my accessory coverage on my ZG set at $22k (you can actually go up to $35k) and it only costs me an extra approx $150 a year, makes me sleep better at night knowing that if something really bad happened that I'm covered for everything I have into her plus the stock value of the actual bike (which ain't much BTW)... :)
-
ZG, did Prog tell you to get an independent appraisal?

I think the blue and white as an accent color would look phenomenal. Maybe experiment with that 3rd set of fairings.
-
ZG, did Prog tell you to get an independent appraisal?
Nope, I just had to email them copies of all the receipts, which was actually a major pain in the butt because it was like a 3" thick folder but I did it, then they sent somebody to my house to take pics of the accessories.
All good now! :)

I was thinking you could just use the side fairings you have for a 3rd set, and have two different green combos whenever you felt like a swap.

The paint looks beautiful and I woudl not go with graphics, either. You have so many cool pieces on the bike, why detract from that?
I love the blue and white stripes on the lime green, but your bike does not need those.

Hi, first time poster, long time lurker. Absolutely beautiful bike. I can really appreciate all the detail you've put into it. I was wondering if your body shop mixed their own paint or if it came from the colorite monopoly? I cant seem to find a legitimate paint code for this color. If you have already answered this, I appologize for being redundant. Thanks!

So Jay, what did you have to bribe the bride with to do this (what did she buy)?

ZG, theres no way I coudl have one of your bike. I'd need two of them so I'd always have a perfect, pristine one to look at. My neighbor had the perfect tow vehicle for it out in front of his house.
Imagine a tricked out Hummer in the same shade of green. It left before I could snap a pic. My eyes were too teared up to take a photo anyway.

So as some of you know I just did up a set of gold wheels that I plan to use with an upcoming set of matte black bodywork I'm doing... 8)

The gold wheels are now done and came out quite nice IMO...
I'm thinking about running em with the green bodywork just to see how they look, what do you guys think, should I try it, too blingy? :-\
The green bodywork has quite a bit of gold pearl in it, so in the right light they kinda match pretty good... 8)
I staged em with the bike just now and gave it the ol squint eye, hmmm... :-\

How close is the gold in the wheels to the gold on the ohlins forks? Hard to tell in the pictures. If it is a good match, I would think they would look very good. If they are two different types of gold, not so much.
-
It would definitely look good!!

Jay idea!! Them pipes need to be ceramic coated a semi gloss black ;D

The wheels came out a pretty close match to the inner tubes on the Ohlins forks, a little lighter than the outer fork Ohlins gold, but I also bought some gold EBC rotors for them that are a pretty good match to the outer fork Ohlins gold, so between the Ohlins forks, EBC rotors, and wheels they should all blend together pretty good... :-\

No Pinky, its gunna look good.

I vote "Put 'em on!"
Is that on the ballot?

Even though these gold shoes are for the matte black bodywork I'm doing I just couldn't wait to see what they looked like mounted, so I put em on with the green bodywork today... ;D
Sorry for the crappy phone pics, kind of a gloomy day here in the PNW, no sun... :(
I'm undecided if I like them with the green bodywork though, but I think they're gonna look sick with the matte black!! 8)

Hmm, it seems like it should knock my socks ... but it doesn't. Not sure why. I like the black wheels better with the green bodywork. Just 1 dude's opinion of course.

I'm crazy about the powder coated black bits all over (swing arm, heel guard, etc) and then the gold wheels to contrast. crazy awesome attention to detail :D

Sorry, Jay, gonna say no.
I don't "hate" them, and on another bike particularly a dark colour (mine?) they would probably be the goods. But in contrast to what you have done with the rest of the bike and the extent you have gone to, it just isn't ringing right for me. Kinda gone from totally integrated custom setup, to something that feels a bit blinged. To take it to a worse degree, might as well have put spinners on there.
Sorry, Bro.

ZG, I really like your paint job ! I am thinking about it for my bike but I would probably keep more black area.
Nonetheless, when you powder coat your wheels, that will look sick, man !
I like the Kawa European model Z1000 tourer paint job, and probably would follow the same kind of pattern.

Nonetheless, when you powder coat your wheels, that will look sick, man !
I like the Kawa European model Z1000 tourer paint job, and probably would follow the same kind of pattern.

Ya, I like the 2-tone as well Mav, I'm having a 3rd full set of bodywork done in a matte black next and plan to only mount the matte black tank, front fender, mirrors, and side case lids to start, leaving all the other pieces Kawi green just to see how it looks before installing the tail, sides, and upper...
Mix & match!

I saw these on Facebook.
It is not ZG Green, but it is the Mopar Green used on the Challenger.
I notice in the last picture he is carrying extra fuel. Wonder where he has been riding. Connie has pretty decent range IMO.

Having spares has so many benefits! :)
On my left mirror the paint at an edge had lifted off a bit, it's a pretty small spot but my eye would draw to it... :-\
(http://i1200.photobucket.com/albums/bb336/jaywilcox/iuwqeoi_zps3fd09b46.jpg) (http://s1200.photobucket.com/user/jaywilcox/media/iuwqeoi_zps3fd09b46.jpg.html)
Long story short my paint shop has lifetime warranty, so they're going to repaint the mirror for free and I'm dropping it off tomorrow, they said they'd need about a week to completely strip it and repaint layer by layer...
So hence where the spares come in... I went ahead and pulled my right mirror off too and put on the black ones from my original bodywork set! They actually blend in pretty good with all the other black stuff, and now I'll have zero down time of riding my ZG while the green mirror get's redone!

Ok, the UPS man commith!! So now I can share the rest of the story...
I've been trying to find some carbon fiber lowers for months now to no avail, so I've decided to have a set of lowers painted in matching green as the rest of the bodywork. 8)
I scored a rashed right side lower cheap off ebay and the good Cap'n once again shares in this project by sending me his old C14 scratched left lower, I bought the middle lower section new cause it was only $30 and even opted to buy 2 of those to have painted since that area takes quite a bit of abuse from road debris, and it will be nice to have a fresh one on the shelf if needed... ;D
I just dropped all the parts off at the painter, might be done by Friday but worse case should be Monday. My painter ordered up more of the paint last week and it delivered to them today as well!! :)
Soooo..... lets GO GREEN one more time!! 8) :chugbeer:

My shop just emailed me these pics, half way through install...
I went to my local hardware store and got these round rubber grommets that have a little lip on both sides, I had my shop put those in the drilled holes for my Top Block sliders since the lowers were painted I didn't want a raw edge exposed once drilled... The rubber grommets look very sano IMO!! 8)

Thanks Chet, agreed bro! :chugbeer:
"Complete" is a good word, I really think having those painted gives it such a more "finished" look, something about those raw black lowers always made it look somewhat unfinished with the green paint IMO... :-\
-
That first pic is screaming finish me!!!!!! The rad guard I could see being copper plated to add a touch of extreme class, almost gol, almost silver, deep, rich color to compliment the green. I gotta get down there to snap some pics, once she is "right" of course ;) ;D

ZG, I never really liked the way it was before (top green, low black) so I followed my grandma's advice: if you don't have something nice to say, better keep it for yourself. But now that I see the lower part also in green, I have to admit that your bike looks stunning. Kate Beckinsale stunning.

I must say, I really like the look with the lower fairing painted to match. It makes the bike much more "sportier". I wonder what mine would look like painted...
