15k service cost?
« on: November 16, 2011, 07:50:53 PM »
What can I expect for a 15K service cost?  I may need to save up through the winter!

Depends if you plan on having the valves checked. If so, It will probably be at least $500 at a dealer. I have seen many posts on the old forum about this and the prices varied, so this is a ball park number at best.

I have seen prices as low as $400 and as high as $700.  It all depends on your dealer and how bad they try to stick it to you.

I can't say this will be the case on your bike. When I had mine checked at 15,000 there where no changes made to the valves. The mechanic said  I should have waited until 25,000.  Even with no valve adjustment, it still cost me just a little over $600.00.

I can adjust my Z-1's valves in 2 hours, start to finsh. I think it might be time to gear up and do my own checks on the 14 as well.

I did my 15K service at 25K + valves.  I had some other nuisances taken care of too.  I'd rather not say what I paid, but it was well north of $700 bucks.  I had exhaust bolts tightened, warped calipers, air filter, spark plugs,  and that stuff.  I was afraid of the valves, I think that I will be learning in the future.  I could have done the rest, but since it was apart....

I went into a local dealer to ask about what the 15k service would cost.  He brought out a service manual and said "wow, thats a lot of stuff to check", he then went into the shop and came out 20 minutes later and said he thought it would take about 350 to 400 in labor.

I got the impression they may have never done a 15k Connie. Is that a problem? Would I be better off finding a dealer who  has been through one before?

Yes and yes.  You do not want them to learn how to do it on your bike, making mistakes along the way.  Unlike individual owners, who have the luxury to take days to do the job, shop mechanics must rush the job and get it done within the time allowed. So they better know exactly how to proceed without any screw ups.

Mine cost about $500-550.  $300 for a HF lift.  $75? for a Factory Service Manual.  The rest was parts, supplies and some hand tools.  I figure that most of my tools have been paid for by doing the work myself.  I enjoy it, get "free" tools, and make a few bucks/hour doing something I'd do for free.

My 15k service cost ~$80 for the shims I bought. Ok, another, what, $70 for the Factory Service Manual and $70 for Fred's DVD's.

Do it yourself, and if you want/need help ask and folks like me will come and assist. PM me if you want to discuss doing this maintenance task in a fashion that does not require using a dealer.

I remove and replace the plastic myself. Saves shop labor time. Both 15000 and 30000 mile services were around $300 to $350.

I've been pleased with the service I've received from Grapevine Kawasaki.

Brave man....

I'm sure you will agree shims over buckets are easier to do than buckets over shims. And with no plastic to remove.....Besides paying a shop to check the valves every 4k gets old. Since I change oil every 2k on this bike, it means every other oil change also gets a valve check. I don't  have a inch pound torque wrench. and I need to buy one instead of vorrowing one. And not only that, I do the Z-1 outside on a clear day. The Connie would need shop space. Shop space is thin around my house.

I've been pleased with the service I've received from Grapevine Kawasaki.

Bought my bike there and had one small warranty issue fixed there (took 15 minutes), but haven't yet had any service work done. They seem like good guys and do have a better reputation than the Irving guys.

I'd be interested to hear how much it would cost at Grapevine.

I can't recall... I had a ton of stuff done all at once, including new tires and some other stuff, so I can't recall what the 15k alone would be.
