I was doing some reading. Since your fuel economy is so good I do not think you are running too rich, instead you maybe running to lean which is a not a good thing.

This was interesting reading.  When my friend and I   built  airplanes  (http://www.harmonrocket.com/)  we always installed exhaust gas temperature sensors  for each cylinder to monitor for too rich or too lean. Too lean would melt the pistons. I would pull the spark plugs and have a look or replace them.
You could try aviation fuel or race fuel. Those are normally 100 octane with no ethanol and see if the pinging goes away.
Pinging occasionally is not such a bad thing but it can cause other issues which would lead to engine failure if  not remedied.

If you still have fuel in the tank, you are not lost yet
Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle

I have the Guhl re-flash and no problems what so ever. Although I do live at 7500' and haven't been lower then 3500' since the re-flash.

Very impractical when one is touring hundreds of miles away from home.

I believe he was just offering that suggestion as a test, not as a solution.
