Which are you? Rider or Driver

I've always been taught that any moving object you sit straddle of, you ride. I've always known that I'm a Rider. It always strikes me as odd when I read a post about driving a motorcycle.

If one is riding knee-drag style off the seat is it still considered straddling

I "pilot" my Concours. The "rider" is the person behind me that can't steer or twist the throttle. They're just "along for the ride".

Then why are all motorcycle racers referred to as 'Riders"?  The person behind you is riding as a passenger or pillion.

When you talk about someone that rides a motorcycle they say, 'they are a motorcycle rider', so I consider myself a rider. Anybody behind me is a passenger, unless they come with all the time, then I might consider them a rider. My wife has ridden with me a couple of times but I don't consider her a rider, but she is SWMBO.

Does one ride or pilot a horse? As far as a motorcycle, semantics I guess, you pilot a bike while riding it.

Rider.

One does not a "drive" a motorcycle any more than one would "drive" a horse or a bicycle.

Ride a bike.
Ride a horse.
I ride my motorcycle. Makes me a rider.

I drive a car/truck.  I ride a motorcycle.  I always wonder how people can refer to riding a motorcycle as driving it.

I try to lane split even when driving an F350 dually.  Does that make me a rider?

I have always called it riding but "rider" infers being a passenger while driver infers being in control. I'll still stick with rider.
