Great story written about the chemist who turn a natural herb (my opinion) into a killer with no intention of creating a drug for public use. For all the OldKids who remember the sixties you will find this interesting.
-
Kind of amazing that they left out the reason why he synthesized those compounds. He got a great big grant to study the effects of marijuana on humans...but then couldn't get permission to use real marijuana. So he did what he had to do; he made what he needed. And now he's getting all sorts of crap for it.
-
Interesting.....will pass that on to the writer of the story and ask "how come" he left it out? Thanks

The only thing I remember about the 60's is $11 for a 3 finger baggie. ;)

weren't they called "lids" back then...
-
I have no idea why I'm interested in this...I must be

They were called that in the 70s for sure....of course I just remember hearing that in high school.
-
Yes, yes. All theory and hypothetical suppositions.

Indeed... 8)
Why am I all of the sudden craving 7/11 nachos reading this thread though... ???
I like the last couple sentences of this read Jim, whenever I hear martini I think of you. ;)
"Huffman has never considered smoking his compounds, but he did smoke marijuana — once. It was in the mid-1990s, at a research conference in Arizona.
Two researchers flew in from Amsterdam with "very high-quality Dutch hash" tucked into a matchbox, he said. They offered. He smoked — scientific curiosity prevailed.
The effects were similar to two-and-a-half martinis, he recalled. And the smoke burned his throat.
"I decided to stick to martinis," the professor said. "They're legal."
-
I can certainly attest to the effects of 2.5 martinis... as to the other...I'll drink the fifth.

And I cannot say 'reefer' with a straight face. I spent too much time listening and watching these two in the early 70's.
Cheech & Chong Up in smoke car joke (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RX_Wuvya0iU#ws)
They totally ruined me...
-
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK
"Who is it?"
"It's Dave."
"Dave's not here."
I never smoked but I wouldn't have made it through high school without Cheech & Chong and Dave.
-
I still love the Cheech & Chong movies, even knowing every line I still laugh my butt off! ;D
Ain't that a peach!! :rotflmao:
-
Ah the Karmic wheel...... watched Cheech and Chong with my kids once......ever since they can't resist knocking on the bathroom door and yelling "Dave's not here man".... and an ounce of pot was a LID and 2.5 martini would never make me want to eat 7/11 nachos.....barf them maybe but not crave them! :'(

I only thought they were for display.... It's like eating Mo's pickled eggs. Bad things can happen.

Now, the classic 1936 Reefer Madness is a must view for all wannabe toke heads!!
-
Mr Tee is CORRECT......so drink a couple of Martini's before you do. Me I am left to drink Dalhwinne tonight and think of the old days! HMMMMMMM and maybe some 7/11 nachos.......or at least a dominos pizza delivered. ???
-
Go with the pizza. You won't be sorry.
-
... and an ounce of pot was a LID
It's all very fuzzy, but I seem to remember a lid as being 3 fingers - an unweighed amount, but somewhat less than an oz. That may have varied by region.
Disclaimer - I have no personal knowledge of lids, ozs, or marijuana. This is all just hearsay. I think. Can't remember. Don't quote me on that. 8)

I grew up in HI in the 70's... you could walk out to the cane fields, and if not greedy, pick what you wanted, dry it out, and have some good stuff. When I moved back to the mainland in 77, middle of my Jr year of HS, the stuff available was pretty nasty.
This year in CO, it's on the ballot for legalization... not just medical use, but personal use. I can't wait to see the results.

My Dad tells about how this was once presented as the real deal.....
Showed it in school as an educational film, he was already playing in a band and "knew better", so he describes it as one of the pivotal moments where his generation began to "turn on"
Hard for my generation to understand how they ever tried to take it seriously. Ya want to ask the writers "Have you ever actually seen anyone high on pot?"

Or if they could at least done a follow-up called Tequila maddness!?

Suddenly I have a craving for homemade chocolate chip cookies.

Ya'll just crack me up!

Yea, I would rather smoke a lid than drink a martini or anything else for that matter. I wonder what they call them these days? The mexican poot weed they use to sell in Texas cost $10.00 in the 70's. At some point the good stuff from Southern Mexico and points farther south started making its way to the local neighborhoods. The cost of doing business went up significantly at that point. That stuff was everywhere. I guess it still is. So much for the war on drugs.

I'm pretty sure that they still call 'em martinis. ;)
-
You rang?
-
There's the martini expert! They still call em that right boss?
-
Yep and there are at least a million combinations that one can try and the best of all they're still legal. Just don't drive or act up in public.
-
I can certainly attest to the effects of 2.5 martinis... as to the other...I'll drink the fifth.
Shouldn't that be 2.2 martinis? Seeing as for many of us geezers this was our introduction to converting English to metric (fortunately for our survival rate Japanese motorcycles came along a little later).

I've treated maybe 5 or 6 people who have taken this stuff before Ohio banned it and took it off the shelves a few weeks ago. Good way to try to kill yourself. Mimicked signs and symptoms similar cocaine from what I saw, it would probably kill anybody over 50 in my opinion. But every single person who took it sweared that they would NEVER,EVER take it again! Scared them that bad. Of course they were all under 25 y/o with me standing next to them when they said it.

I'll stick with the natural stuff thanks, the way God intended. *

Yeah, I agree Conrad, folks who take this stuff thinking its some sort of legal synthesized "pot" get a real big surprise when they end up in the hospital almost dead, or scared half to death.

The adult kid of our friends tried this fake crap while at collage and ended up in the hospital because he tried to play tag with cars out on the highway. The little $hit bounced off of several cars and caused numerous wrecks as cars tried to avoid hitting him. I smoked pot from the late 70's through the 90's before quitting and never once did I ever think about doing anything quite so dam stupid and dangerous.

As I think back to my younger years I think I said that with mostly everything (at least I would hypothetically) including alcohol. I don't know about the stuff that's out there now (hypothetically).
And Conrad is right, if it's grown on the side of the road it's ok by me (talking agriculture hypothetically). ::)

Are you sure it didn't have long term effects? I mean, how do you know? Hypothetically of course.

I would be happy if they would just let us grow it. Life would be sweet in the summer time with "tomato sandwichs and home grown buzz...a pepsi ....beach time....good surf" sigh` I got carried away. BLING! It's cold, not summer and gerss aint legal......and not a fresh tomato anywhere. BAH! ??? Anyone got some good roller ball numbers I am more likely to win the Mega Ball.
