Good morrow all,
My current bike is a 98 Concours with 1 mile shy of 22,000. It had sat for over three years and PO had not taken care of her.
Since purchasing I've had the carbs cleaned/resealed, refurbished the front calipers, new brake pads, new tires (Avon Spirits), new Rifle windshield (PO dropped the bike while delivering due to ceased brakes) so I have a few body//fairing issues. Those were not helped after I dropped her which resulted in new RH footpeg & bracket. Basic oils and other fluids have been changed too.
I live in the Chicago area (Evanston) and have been riding off and on since early eighties. I learned to ride on a Honda 125 in the center of London, way prior to traffic limitations so was an "exciting experience". Bikes I've had here in the US, 1981 Suzuki GS 750T, 1983 Suzuki GS1100E and now the Connie.
As I'm not overly familiar with how Connies are supposed to sound I wondered if the noise of 998 crickets almost chirping in unison, as I motor along is something I should be worried about.
The sound diminishes dramatically if I haul in the clutch and coast, or if I drop to below 2k rpm. Also is 4k+rpm normal in 6th @65+mph?

I thought there were 1000 grasshoppers at one point but after buzzing about realized a couple had fallen off, and the timbre was not quite right for grasshoppers. :) :D

I always thought displacement was 997.

I don't think grasshoppers chirp over here unless they are English grasshoppers. In which case all is well and good with the world.

I think the 1400 CC C14 is actually 1352 CCs. I seem to recall that this is just a way to get by certain laws/restrictions but for the life of me I can't find it in print.

Stasch is right, she's 997cc so you have one cricket too many 🤣
If you can't get rid of it, don't worry about it. Many of them do it.
Most 1 liter bikes are slightly under 1000cc as that way any manufacturing variances won't push it over 1000cc which could put it in a different insurance/tax/other bracket.
No idea why the ZX14 & C14 are 1352cc. The ZX14R is 1441cc.
The BMW GS650 is 800cc but detuned to perform like a 650 🤣🤣🤣
