Title: Med ID tags... thoughts
Post by: sas mayhem on May 23, 2011, 04:44:07 PM
Do you Conker's think that these are a silly idea? http://www.roadid.com/Common/Catalog.aspx?C=RoadID#5 (http://www.roadid.com/Common/Catalog.aspx?C=RoadID#5)  And if I get into an accident, where I can't talk there is really no one that going to know me or medical history.   Anyone of you all think about it, if your solo riding or what ever? How will the doctors treat you?

Thoughts please

Cheers
Ron

No I think they are a great idea. It could make a big difference if you cannot communicate after an accident of other. I have this site saved. For some reason, I just never find the couple of minutes to order tags.

I'm assuming that first responders are trained to look for med tags first and then "if time permits" to look thru wallets. If that's the case then these do make sense I think.  By the time they find my wallet in my bag I might be on my way to the pearly gates.

I've been wanting to get one of the flash drive medical ID tags and wear it on a chain.

Trouble is, they want $39.95 for a $3.00 flash drive :o

I remember people talking about these on a different forum:
http://www.resqtag.com/index.html (http://www.resqtag.com/index.html)

They appear to be sold out at the moment, but the nice thing about them is the roll up and become your jacket's zipper handle so its right on your front (of course assuming the crash didn't tear the front of your jacket off).

I have a wrist band that is also a flash drive.  It has medical and personal information. A photo can be added if desired.  Only problem is I often forget to wear it.

I wear a pendant on a chain all the time now that is a med-alert symbol on the front and my name, diabetic, medicine allergy, and phone number engraved on the back.  You can get forms at Walgreens and CVS for the pendant, bracelets, etc.

The other problem is, how do you know that the bus rig you get loaded into has a compatible system to read it with? I think a good old fashioned tag is the answer.

My meds and alergies info are in 3 locations.
My wallet, my bike reg. info packet, and in the trunk pouch on the inside top box cover. I also have a sticker on my helmet that tells helpers not to remove my helmet if I am in an accident and can't respond. My cell phone also has the info sectgion, all that info is there also.
Ride safe all.

The more info you can give to 1st responders the more effective the treatment they can provide.
ICE  [In Case of Emergency] on your cell phone is catching on.

My son is Diabetic since 7. He carries a med alert wallet card. When He pulls over he has license and card together. He has to have food where he can reach it. I am not sure it is connected but he has been pulled over more times in the 5 years he has been driving than i have  in my whole life. They check for food and he never gets a ticket. Me.... that is another story.

I am a Diabetic also, but not insulan based. And yes, the info is on my license info on the state computor. I didn't know this until last yr. when I was at the Moonshine LR. I had stopped at a road side rest, not a state run one and a local Sherriff came in behind me. I wasn't doing anything wrong, but he saw my brake strobe and was curious what i had done to get it to work. When I opened my trunk to show him the lite and modulator my diabetic tester was right there on the top of the stuff in the trunk. Well he was also a diabetic and we talked about it and he asked if the info was on my Ohio license? I said I didn't know, so he scanned it and there it was, and it was very accurate via my meds and possible foods I should have with me or can get easily. Even he was impressed with the info.
I guess it is all in what you give the BMV, but this kind of info is important.
Even though I can regulate mine with diet, it is still important if things happen on a trip.
Ride safe all.

That assumes that your cell phone survives the crash.  I have emergency info on my cell phone, but also in my wallet.  Several locations is always a good idea.

I used to have a nice little pouch attached to my helmet with info, but have since gotten a new helmet.  Need to get a new pouch.

I wear the standard RoadId every time I ride. It goes on my wrist. Here is what I've heard. First responder don't always know to look there. From what I've read, the best place for one is dog tags. They know to look there. My Road Id only has ICE contacts like my GF, and my family. At the bottom I do have no known allergies.

I used to have a nice little pouch attached to my helmet with info, ...

My SO and I now have labels on the back of our helmets with contact info.  I read about doing that from another posting here BTC.  My SO is a little nervous about seeing that on the back of my helmet all the time.  I just promise not to drag pegs over 90mpg.  :)

Dog tags are a good place for them, as your chest will get exposed in the course of an exam, no guarantee about anywhere else. Helmets are a good place, but what if you slide on that part and scrape it all off, or render it illegible?

I guess the best thing would be to just tattoo it on your face, and hope you don't slide on that part...

I'm impressed with Motorport, they offer an option for an ICE marked pocket on their jackets..

My wife and I have the resque tags items on our jackets and sticker on our helmets. Nice item, but have been difficult to get in the past. Usually comes with two, fold up, red colored, packets that you write you medications, allergies, ICE info on. The two "packets" are for your jacket and your riding suit pants. My wife uses one of hers on her purse at all times.
There's also a sticker you apply to your helmet for first responders to see.
I just wish the item was more readily available. Any means of ID is great, although I tend to agree with others; do first responders "generally" look for such info or tags? I would hope so.

The wrist is a common place for Medic Alert tags, so I would expect first responders to check both the neck and the wrist.

As an aside, Yes, I am an EMT (hence the Yo, Doc! for a name). Regardless of where a responder may or may not check, your chest WILL get exposed on an exam. Therefore, a good place to put a tag.

That said, anything noticeable is great, and a wrist ID is VERY common, especially amongst Diabetics.

I was just directed to this site for a idea too.

I also never thought of the I.C.E on the cell phone either, thanks for that input.

I used to have an ICE on my cell phone with a 1 in front of it to make sure it was at the top, until I realized since I have company e-mail on it I must secure it with a PIN. No more ICE.

If you have an Iphone or Android phone, there is also an app called ICE or In Case of Emergency. I had it on my phone, but deleted it because I found it annoying, thus wasting the two dollars I spent.

I created a free Medical Emergency Information Alert wallet card (http://www.medids.com/img/walletcard.gif) (http://www.medids.com/free-id.php) at MedID.com (http://www.medids.com/free-id.php) which I laminated and wear around my neck when riding.  I figure if I'm unconscious the EMTs or hospital staff will strip me down and find it.  I do not have any medical conditions that they need to be aware of before treatment.

I used to wear cheap military type dog tags I bought for a couple of dollars at an Army-Navy surplus store I found while riding in the boonies of, I think, Arkansas.  The store had an old surplus military dog tag stamper.  Unfortunately the information on those dog tags eventually became inaccurate and I have no way to get new ones made since I can't even remember where the store was.  I'm too frugal to pay the price for medical id dog tags.

Too busy to Google it, but runners have long used a variety of ID tags, which come in various styles including an electronic one. RunnersID or something like that.

I keep meaning to order one. Good stuff and probably better prices.

But you can also go to an Ace Hardware store (at least mine) and have a plastic tag engraved with your information for under $10. Or any shop that does sports team trophies.

As a career firefighter/paramedic in Ohio I would say that a wrist applied device will be seen much quicker than anything else, with chest being a very close second. Forget about your wallet or cell phone unless you are alert and oriented or someone with you knows where its at on you, we don't have time to start going through menus or cards when we are treating you if its a traumatic injury, maybe they will at the hospital, but most always not as my wife was a trauma nurse for over 20 years also and she says the same thing. Most times but not always the police will notify next of kin, if no info from us or police is given because the police don't always come right away to the hospital then they'll start digging around for ID and info. This is my experience only and what I do on scene. I think the info on the license available to the police is a great idea too.

I've used the mentioned http://www.resqtag.com/index.html (http://www.resqtag.com/index.html) for years... attached to outer zipper... they'll see it when/if they have to unzip/rip open the jacket... it hangs out, and is very visable, sitcker on helmet too.  Cell has ICE info if it survives.  If I'm on anything over a day long ride, I also have a lanyard with a pouch will all kinds of info packed.

The USB stuff I've been told is great, but not all EMT/EMS services are going to pack a laptop to access this info... they want info stat... and that means something they can read pronto with basic personal info, blood type, med allergies, med's taking, med problems... etc...

I'll second (third?) the stuff already mentioned by the other EMTs. Put it on your core close to your skin. Make it bright and flashy and hard to miss. Make it easily identifiable and for gods sake make it low tech. Yeah I have a computer in the truck, but I don't need your middle initial or insurance info during the beginning of a call. Major medical hx, allergies, name. That's about it. Use the initial alerter to refer the medics to another location that has all your info on it, including ICE.
Also, core or wrist both would work. Full disclosure: I don't have one of these on me when I ride.

Well my friends I ended up getting the http://www.rescuefacts.com/?page_id=32 (http://www.rescuefacts.com/?page_id=32), it was what I was looking for.  Before I ordered them, I asked via e mail, if I could get them in red, for better visibility.  To my surprise I got a email back form the office from a Cordelia I real super person,  she informed me that all the motorcycle one come in black, BUT the tags for a large K-9 (dog  ;)) that they sell, is the same size and is in red. So she kindly sent me the K-9 ones and a stack of human (that us) medical slips to replace the Veterinarian slip. Another thing that I liked about this system is that I can put one on my helmet and use another on fasten to my zipper.  I don't honestly see myself remembering to always making sure that I have a bracelet or necklace on, since my work place and 20 yrs in the USAF working on planes... jewelry is Forbidden.  So this set up worked the best for me and the best bang for the buck.
OH !!! I have ridden in the rain and everything stayed dry, and I can't feel them either.

Looks good! Hard to miss I'd say. I'm always mystified as to why all bike apparel is only offered in black, and yet, all we scream about is how folks always try to run us over because they don't see us. Why would they only offer an item that REALLY,REALLY needs to be seen in a REALLY important situation REALLY fast....only in black? Good luck, I'm going to say I hope it never has to be used, one time where you are glad for NOT getting your money's worth.

I wear a road ID when I run or bicycle and don't want to bring a wallet.  Have done so for several years now.  Haven't worn them any other time though.
