I stand corrected on that and appreciate the education. I never knew that. I've used both many times and the gear oil seems thicker to me, but I must admit I've never really paid that much attention I guess.When I found this out, I was shocked. How could myself and all my friends been so wrong for so many years. Some of them had engineering degrees! Now I think it was just the smell that made it seem so "thick". Now you can go out and impress your friends with this new knowledge. I did.
I'll stick with the second part of my answer though in that the actual properties could be very different, and I freely admit I don't know the facts on that, I just don't see the point in taking a chance.

Now you may have over-filled the rear end. Check the level before the next ride, and remove any excess before it blows out a seal somewhere.
i would change the oil+ filter after every ride for 5 trips . Get every trace of that stinky **** out.
