I think your engine is toast, at this point. It may sound OK, but will likely spit a rod out the side of the block any second.

I'll give ya $20 for it, if you promise not to start it again. ;D

I stand corrected on that and appreciate the education.  I never knew that.  I've used both many times and the gear oil seems thicker to me, but I must admit I've never really paid that much attention I guess.

I'll stick with the second part of my answer though in that the actual properties could be very different, and I freely admit I don't know the facts on that, I just don't see the point in taking a chance.

Thanks again for the information.  I hate learning by my mistakes, but it's better than not learning at all.
When I found this out, I was shocked. How could myself and all my friends been so wrong for so many years. Some of them had engineering degrees! Now I think it was just the smell that made it seem so "thick". Now you can go out and impress your friends with this new knowledge. I did.  ;)

Now you may have over-filled the rear end. Check the level before the next ride, and remove any excess before it blows out a seal somewhere.

I doubt that it will "blow a seal", but I suppose anything is possible.  More than likely though it will just make a little mess as it leaks on the rear wheel.

I would just change the oil and filter ride it.

Maybe he should change the oil and filter 100 times in a row after each mile?  ::)

Excellent.  I'd love to be his supplier of oil and filters....

Yes, it's gotten to the point of silliness.    :P
