Found another loose bolt today, add it to the check list...
« on: August 21, 2011, 03:32:05 PM »
After I finished swapping the header again, and rolled the bike off the lift, I was sitting on the seat looking under the left side of the dash and noticed a bolt had loosened up.

I don't know if the 08's & 09's have this bolt in the same place, but on the 10's and 11's, you should add this one to the maintenance check list.

The picture is looking just below the left side of the dash with the front wheel turned all the way to the left.  You can see the rubber cover over the left headlight bulb as a reference landmark.

Isn't that one of the bolts that secure the windshield adjusting assembly? If so, the 08/09's do have them and they do tend to loosen over time. The bracket that secures it to the mirror center beam also has a tendency to break off should your bike tip over. Don't ask how I know this :-[

I didn't look that close to see what it was holding, just figured it was part of the fairing / headlight mount (I had a bolt in that same spot come loose on my C10, and that's what it was for).

It makes sense that it was partially responsible for supporting the windshield now that I think about it.  When I was riding last week, I noticed the windshield was moving around more than I thought it used to, and was wondering why.  Today, I didn't notice it moving (wasn't looking though), but I'll watch for it tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads up.  Checked mine.  It's tight.

That bolt must be for the windshield support.  All the front to back movement was gone when I rode in this morning.  I guess if your windshield has a lot of movement while riding, that would be a good indication to check that bolt.

Incidentally, you can see the head of the bolt while riding.  If you look just above the ignition switch "OFF" marking, in the gap between the speedometer and the ignition switch, the bolt head is visible way down in those dark recesses under the dash.  This gives me something else to occasionally look at when I'm bored with the rest of the scenery.   ;)
