Title: GTR 1000 Carburettor Floats
Post by: LT South Africa on October 29, 2016, 04:09:12 AM
Hi Guys.

Stumbled across something that confuses me. Whilst checking the float heights I realised that I do not have any means to adjust them. The floats at plastic and the needle seats into a cut out in the plastic. There is no tang which I can adjust.

My floats are riding much lower than the specified 17mm as recommended in the manual.

What do I do now?

I have attached a picture of the floats for clarity

Wow, mine had a metal tang.  Can you add shims under the seat in the body that the needle goes against.  But finding washers that small may not be feasible.  Steve from SISF may have the answer as he works on carburetors all the time.

Look again.
They all have a metal tang to bend.

Ted

Updte: My oops. Was unable to see photo previously.
That float is not like the floats we have in our Connies?

Wtf???

Man, I don't know where you came up with that, but please, refrain from carb assistance from now on.

As for that photo, I have no clue as to what carbs that came from, but it isn't a Kehein CV carb from a Concours....

If it was in your bike, sombody severly hosed you up....

My Photobucket host site is messed up, as soon as its corrected I'll post a photo for you...

MOB, This might be a S. African version. You never know. It's a big world out there :P  :P :P

Anyway LT, that is surely not the floats from a regular C10. Our's are drum shaped. Do you have a pic of the whole carb?

Maybe in Poland things are different... but not THAT different....

It's really HOT and humid in S.A. So the floats need to be flatter. It's just principles fluid dynamics MOB.   :o :o ;D ;D ;D ;D

I am kidding.

Anyway, how is it different in Poland and why just Poland? I know the European versions look a little different but I thought the innards were the same.

Ted

Never seen floats like those on a Concours but my 1985 Honda Nighthawk S had similar plastic floats. No tang to bend:

My photo host is down, but I just found a picture of one style of Conni floats, should look like this....

As for the carbs you pictured.... those are HONDA carbs... not Kaw issued or installed...

Dan is correct on his description, and as soon as I saw the chrome plated diaphragm covers it was clear...

LT, those are not our carbs.

Now, take a picture of your whole bike those carbs came from and post it for us.

I kinda said that in my post above....
Now its perfectly clear why his other post about carbs, has him looking for an airbox.... which will not fit for those carbs... and why the prior owner removed it, and replaced it with indifidual pod filters.....
It all is clear now....

Man,.what a mess he has to undo now.
Bummer

I know you said so. I just wanted to make sure there was no misunderstanding, so I repeated it just for his assurance  ;D

MOB, curious, do these floats ever crack, leak go bad after so many years in contact with gasoline?

Wow  that is a mess and now it all makes sense. Now he needs the correct  carbs AND airbox.  I wonder what else has been Frankensteined on this bike.

Thanx for the response guys. I suppose the thing to do now is try and find someone who can do a swop out of the Honda carbs for kawasaki carbs. Here are some pictures of the bike. It's a 1988 GTR 1000

Bike looks to be in pretty good shape.
Best of luck.

Ride safe, Ted

Thanx mate. She runs okay. Just sluggish on pull off requiring added throttle. And when you gear back and then accelerate she lags for a second as if starving of fuel. Or maybe she is getting too much oxygen. Otherwise no complaints. Oh and yes. She is much noisier than my former bike. 😎

Just to let you guys know. I did a search and it seems that the carbs I have on my Connie actually seem to come from the Honda Nighthawk 700/750. So at the end of the day I am never going to get them to run a 1000cc engine. But I am just going to have to live with it for awhile until I can source and afford the original carbs.  Thanx for all your help guys. Your input was priceless. Well done......!

I don't know how easy it is for you to get carbs in SA but used ones are quite common here and not very expensive.

If you want to buy a set I recommend posting a want to buy post here and seeing if anyone has a set they would sell.

You can get them directly from ebay too. carbs are such a bitch even for bikes with the OEM ones, your bike will never run properly w/o the right set.

Buying used carbs can be a real gamble too... It is like a box of chocolates... you never know what your going to get.
I would probably try and buy them from the USA ebay or forum  and have them shipped directly  to Sunny Steve to have them checked out , re jetted/rebuilt before  having them shipped to SA. (Along with a new air box and filter and the rubber parts needed to hook the carbs to the air box and the engine)
