SKF wheel bearings mfg in India?
« on: March 01, 2015, 08:42:51 PM »
Just received some SKF front wheel bearings for my '97 that I bought off eBay.  What I didn't know at purchase was they were made in India, but that is what is stamped on them.  I'm inclined to not use them on the bike.

Buyer beware, as usual.

It looks like they have been making them there also for quite awhile.

You expected them to be made here? It's a Swedish company.

Install them, there is nothing wrong with them, they been manufacturing them there for decades.
Same goes for NSK,NTN, and NTK, where do you think the OEM bearings all over your bike were manufactured.... ????

Even good old Ohio based Timken is now made over there....

Technology has moved forward, we need to understand this, the worst quality products many times are manufactured here on domestic soil, by people that just want a paycheck, and don't care how well they do their job.....

Or simple greedy corporations.... don't make me bring up the space shuttle.......

Interesting, thanks for the replies.

From a page "SKF In India" somewhere under skf.com
SKF's roots in India can be traced back to 1923, when a trading arm of SKF Group was set up in Kolkatta. Since then SKF has been serving the Indian market with high quality bearings for over 3 decades. SKF India Ltd was incorporated in the year 1961 as a result of collaboration between AB SKF, Associated Bearing Company limited and Investment Corporation of India Ltd and the first manufacturing plant was commissioned in Pune in the year 1965.

But eBay sellers do have the ability to specify country of manufacture.  I was thinking European manufacture.

I wonder how much of my Japanese bike was really built in Nebraska.

Assembled in Nebraska.  I'm not sure much of anything was actually built on site, just shipped on site and then assembled.

Good bearings only come from a few places. USA, of course. Japan good, rest of the Far East, not so good. China crap. Much -- though not all! -- of Europe good. I tend to ask for place of manufacture prior to purchase now, whether by email or telephone (McMaster can usually tell me). And, of course, if the price is lower than you might think, the odds are the item is Chinese crap.

So, is your position that India is part of the Far East?
Every post I've ever read on bearings - USA, Japan, Germany are good.  Most of Europe is good; most of the rest of the world - well, I have rust on my Chinese Stainless Steel Brake Rotors, ...

There are many grades of stainless. Some will rust. It's not a matter of quality, it's the type of metal.

The female body part has an A instead of an O. And a U. Volvo is derived from Latin for "I Roll".

Guess its better than the Chevy/Toyota venture in the 90's called the "NOVA", which did not sell very well in Spanish speaking countries in South America.

And don't ignore Toyota's TRD (TuRD) package, available on the truck of your choice. (There's a reason they called it that.)

And DON'T think about what the Ford "FOCUS" spells backwards.

Didnt sell well, period! The NUUMI plant is closed now IIRC.
Little did they think No Va meant basically, "wont go".
In the 70s they had the Nova, Omega, Venture and Apollo, all rebadged Novas.
The first letter of each car spelled NOVA.

Bought my wheel bearings from Murph.  Can't tell you what package they came in or where they were made.  I bought them from Murph.  Nuff said.

No, not quite nuff said.  His website indicates they are either from here or there and what you will receive will be one  of several brands.
