How to remove your oil filter video...without a filter wrench!
« on: February 18, 2013, 01:43:12 AM »
Hey, folks.

Just did the first oil change on my Concours and thought I might run into trouble.  I was able to get the oil filter off and thought I'd share how for those of you who either don't have a filter wrench handy, or perhaps need more leverage.

Thanks!

I'm ashamed to acknowledge that I missed countless opportunities to slip in "that's what she said" at various points during my instructions.

Spock - Fascinating!

I never would have thought of that....but then I have all manner of oil filter wrenches at my disposal to begin with.  I use K&N as well.  My cars use the same cap wrench that the C14 uses.

Good one man!  :chugbeer:
If it can't be fixed with a hammer you can sure as hell teach it a lesson.

Great thinking, but I have to say he didn't have one torqued on like the 08's that were first delivered...
I tried a similar method of wrapping a Nylon strap around with a layer of innertube to grip, and it was a no-go adventure... even broke all of these during the first attempts....the strap wrench was first to blow...

note the "secret solution" shooting a self drilling screw thru the cup, into the filter....
that worked.... ;)

+1 But very cleaver. Back in the day on other vehicles I have used the "pound a screw driver through the filter" method. Messy.

Agreed, although I was lucky on mine and I was able to use the normal metal oil filter cap.

Great Improvising!  I have never found myself in that position though.. I use a Billet oil filter that has a oil filter removal tool with a hole for 3/8" drive. I only use it to take filter off. I tighten it down by hand ONLY! never lost a  filter nor had it loosen up on me..

Very Resourceful,  I love it, a homemade strap wrench- you may be the next McGyver. :)  Yes my 08 was pretty tight and I remember reading that many of the guys on the forum were having difficulty but I was able to get mine off without to much difficulty with the proper size wrench and a store bought strap wrench.

Yep, not many filters would have the balls to talk back to that wrench!

Crazy how tight they put them on. I had to hammer a screwdriver though the filter to get enough leverage to get it loose.
