I'd send you a picture of my phone but it doesn't have a camera.

Maybe I should have asked if you still had to crank it.

Our phone in the 50's was a crank up. I can't remember how many people were on the party line.

There were 13 on our line. Our phone # was two longs and a short.

What Jim said.

Ok, maybe I don't have a totally dumb phone after all. I do text my family and it does take pics. I just refuse to pay extra for a data plan is all.

This thread is veering off track a bit, don't we think?

In that vein, however, one of the things I totally detest is texting.  I think even when we upgrade to smarter phones (my present criteria in a phone is large keys so that I can see them to punch in a number) I'm going to turn that feature off.  It's too bloody dangerous and so easy to do in a vehicle.  It's worse than drunk driving as so many more people use it with abandon.  I hates it, I does.

I'm not sure how a data plan works as I won't get email either.  I don't have to keep in touch up to the second on what's going on.  Don't care.  No social network applications either.  And very little web stuff.  So I'm thinking the only data I may use is possibly sending pictures to someone and the downloading of apps which shouldn't be that great either.  So the minimum plan for my wife and I (Verizon) should work for now.

I'm making the switch for my home pc from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1.  Will be working with it throughout the Holidays.  My initial brush with it this morning is positive.  On the downside, I'm going to replace my (circa 2005 or so) monitor with an HD capable one.  I'll be using an HDMI cable for this one instead of VGA.  I have high expectations.  We'll see.

I hope you like it. I H8 it, and have it on two laptops. It's been a severe dud for MS.

I was initially excited when I found out that Hate.1 was bringing back the start button.  When I found out the start button takes you to the stupid f**king Metro start screen, I got a lot less excited.  Not installing 8.1 yet...  just pissed.

Metro makes ZERO sense on a machine without a touchscreen.  The 'zoom when mouse-over' OSX dock wouldn't make much sense in iOS, just as the 'multiple screens of apps' layout from iOS wouldn't make any sense when you have a high-resolution mouse and pointer.  With Redmond trying to be like Cupertino, we get yet another Microsoft FAIL.

I initially had the same thoughts but the individual I bought it from installed an interface that makes it look like Windows 7.  You can hit the window key to toggle it between that and 8.  I started using 8 and it does take a bit of getting used to but it's going to take me a bit to figure it all some of it out.  I found some things that the guy I bought it from (a client of mine) didn't know but that's because he was used to 8 and not 8.1.  He's been using it for some time.  If he likes it for the most part then I know I will eventually.

I'll ask him what application changes it and let you know.

I'm trying to keep an open mind about 8.1 and see if I can understand their logic in the layout rather than just being different. You have basically two desktops one  regular and the metro which expands sideways like a phone. The real loss is the start button for navigation for finding things. The other deal is that you need the keyboard to get to other screens where I used to get along mostly with the mouse. Does anyone know of any nav tricks for 8.1 that helps getting around?  Personally I feel this is the beginning of the future just buggy like all windows startups that are released before perfected. Also drag and drop doesn't work on all applications...go figure. Just my 2 cents worth. JP
