I thought this might be good info. This info. came from a post on Spyderchat Form. And I quote..........
In 2007, Machinist's Workshop published information on various penetrating oils, testing various penetrants for 'break-out' torque on rusted nuts. The torque load needed to loosen the 'scientifically rusted' bolts using the various penetrants were as follows:
No Oil used .................................. 516 pounds
WD-40 ................................... ...... 238 pounds
PB Blaster ................................... .. 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ................................127 pounds
Kano Kroil ................................... .. 106 pounds
50% ATF - 50% Acetone mix............53 pounds

Good info. I always prefered Liquid Wrench over WD-40. Never used Kano Kroil. I do have ATF and acetone and am going to try that next.

I'm surprised they didn't test Mouse Milk, just about the best stuff you can buy, in IMHO. And yes, it is mostly toluene with some light oil. Thin stuff like acetone, MEK and toluene make great additives for getting oil to penetrate into tiny crevices. Sounds like with some acetone and ATF you can mix your own.

Kroil is used a lot by the gun guys, in fact, the guys that were using the moly coated bullets awhile back used only Kroil to clean the barrels of their rifles, its advertised as being able to penetrate very tiny spaces.

I should have read this post befor i broke off my rear bleeder valve :( it didn't look rusted at all but i guess it was where i could not see it
i do have PB Blaster and Liquid Wrench and both work good but now i will use more Liquid Wrench and may try the ATF - Acetone mix.
this is a very dumb question but what is Acetone? can i get it any where?

Can't give you the definition of acetone but it is sold at Wal-Mart and Menards, etc, in the paint section. Commonly used to clean things, evaporates very quick, used to clean resin off when working with fiberglass resin. Also dissolves stuff like lego blocks and the paste, before dry, is used to repair our fairings (by some).

Can't remember, but is acetone the same as MEK? MEK is very similar if it isn't. You can get MEK anywhere like Lowe's, Home Despot, maybe even K-mart and Wal-Mart. Its a lot more expensive now than a few years back though. If you are going to mix it up, use a glass or steel container.

They are a little different. Acetone will eat up some plastics and other things that MEK won't and vice versa.

Me and my tug have been in the shipyard undergoing major repairs since Thanksgiving to which one of the Electricians told me they needed a grinder to remove some stuck 1/2" exhaust bolts. I grabbed a can of PB-Blaster and squirted them all down twice; came back a few minutes later and removed all 20 of them.... I teased them by saying that "wire biters" are under gunned if the fastener is larger than 5/16.....

Since 2007 there are a number of newer penetrates. For example, WD-40 has a new penetrate that is supposed to be pretty good.

I ran across this info a long time ago, and its served me well. For general use I grab pbblaster, but if i need something to come loose that I know is stuck, I grab my kroil. Its somewhat expensive, so it normally stays with the gun cleaning supplies though.

Most of your cheap nail polish remover is Acetone. So check your wife's supply. I know I've got some ATF around.

It's acetone based. Has some other stuff in it so it won't be such an irritant to their skin. Probably ATF.

Best stuff I ever used is Kroil. That got stuff loose that nothing else would.

Dad worked at a natural gas power plant.
They scrubbed off the 'skunk smell leak detector safety oil' put in at the oil field well head (nat gas is odorless) before injection into the generator turbine.
Smelly (!) but my oh my what a great stuck bolt penetrating agent...
Thanks for the info, I will try the acetone/atf mix.
Places that do fiberglassing or sell 'glassing resins/supplies typically have acetone for sale, if your local paint aisle does not.

MEK and Acetone are both in the same chemical family known as Ketones, and MEK is also known as Methyl Ethyl Ketone, 2-butanone or Methyl Acetone, and Acetone is also known as 2-propanone or Dimethly Ketone.
