Title: Otosclerosis
Post by: Conrad on February 25, 2013, 11:50:11 AM
Anyone here suffer from Otosclerosis? I was diagnosed with it a couple of years ago and decided not to do anything about it then. I've sence changed my mind and I'm looking into sugery to correct it. I just got back from my ENT doc, he did a hearing test and has reffered me to a surgeon.

Anyone have any experience with Otosclerosis and a stapedectomy?

My wife had it done in one ear about 20 years ago with great results. After surgery she did have a problem with noise being so loud it bothered her. Took about a month to get used to the noise level. She was amazed at the sounds that the birds made - she haden't heard the birds before.

Thanks for the reply 1398, I appreciate it.

Does your wife have issues in just the one ear then? How did the surgery go? I'm a bit nervous about that part.

Only problem with the surgery was she vommited several times durring recovery in the hospital. Doctor was concerned that the vommiting may have affected the surgery but it didn't.

I'm having my surgery this coming week. Wish me luck.

I'm more than just a little nervous. It's an out patient procedure but I'll be 'put under' for two to three hours.    :'(

It's amazing that they can correct this with just an outpatient procedure! I'm not a fan of anesthesia, but afterwards, I'm
always upset with myself for being a 'baby' about the whole thing. Heck, who in the hell wants to be awake during the procedure?
Good luck, God bless, and maybe a few of us can stop using CAPS so you can hear us!!

Unconsciousness is nothing to worry about.... unless one of us was in the area, and then you should be terrified, not just a little nervous. You cannot even imagine what Kirby and Mr. Elkhoof could think of to do to you while you lying there..... although the mental image I have of some of the tattoos are pretty funny.   ;D

Best of luck with both the procedure as well as the improvement you expect from it Conrad. I hope it works as well for you as you expect, or perhaps even better.

Thanks so much guys!     :chugbeer:

I'll let you know how it goes. I know that I'm being a big baby about it but I've never been put under anesthesia for so long. I was put under for a colonoscopy a few years ago but that wasn't for very long and the doc wasn't using a laser near my brain to do it. Other than that I haven't been put under since I was 13 and broke my leg.

Other than the anesthesia my biggest worry is that the surgery will mess with my balance. Part of the surgery involves the cochlea and it may take a while before I can ride again. I may be out of work for a while but I have PLENTY of sick leave to use up before I retire.

Welcome to my world. I posted on the COG site of my past 6 months, http://forum.cog-online.org/index.php/topic,43660.0.html, (http://forum.cog-online.org/index.php/topic,43660.0.html,) and I'm battling
dizziness and balance issues. I'm seeing a 'Vestibular specialist', and they are a big help in my recovery. You might want to check if there's any in your
area. As for the anesthesia, either 30 minutes or 2 hours, the only difference is what time it is when you wake up. But you have company, I'm with you.

I had my surgery yesterday and it went well, better than I expected actually. It seems that I got all worked up and worried for nothing. I'm dealing with a little pain and dizziness today. I have plenty of pills for the pain and a patch for the dizziness. My doctor says not to go back to work, or lifting of over 5 pounds, for three weeks. Looks like I'll be getting a lot of reading done in the next few weeks.

The toughest part is letting them knock you out. Congratulations to you! The rest will heal in short order, and hopefully all the symptoms will disappear!

Thanks Jim!

Everyone at the hospital where I had the surgery was great. They ran an EKG on me since I'm over 50 and haven't had one for a while, it was perfect.  My nurse had a lil trouble getting the IV started in my right hand but once she switched to my left, it was a breeze. I was very nervous at this point but they injected something into my IV line 'to take the edge off' and that helped me a lot. I was happy as can be when they rolled me into the OR. The last thing that I remember as they moved me onto the table was that I was cold in the OR. Then I was waking up in the recovery room. My wife and grandson were there and they tell me that I was talking up a storm and then fell back asleep for an hour. I was in surgery for 2.5 hours.

Read some Vince Flynn and Brad Thor with the new Tom Clancy and WEB Griffin thrown in for good measure. Ever read the Stieg Larsson novels, Girl With The Dragon Tatoo, Girl Who Played With Fire, Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest? Thought they were silly when I first heard of them. Actually pretty decent reads, I liked the guys writing style. Good luck, glad it went well. BTW, my wife usually does my IV's, she stuck me once with a 14ga. and I was thinking it was the usual 18 or 20ga. like what you most likely got, holy $hit! I think she pulled out a skin plug! That 1000cc bag of fluids got into me REAL quick.  ;D

Some interesting facts that you may not know about inner ear anatomy...

During stapedectomy surgery there are two nerves in the inner ear that the surgeon has to be concerned about. One supplies the impulses to the facial muscles that allow a person to show expressions (VERY important not to damage during surgery). The other supplies part of the info to the brain about taste from your tongue.

The facial muscle nerve is so important that before the surgery is started sensors are applies to the patent's face that tell the surgeon if the nerve is being affected by what he/she is doing in the ear. No issues in my case.

In my ear the taste nerve was draped across the inside of the ear drum and my surgeon had to move it out of the way, stretching it a bit but not damaging it. This has effected my sense of taste, but should go back to normal once the nerve settles back down. What's strange about this is that plain water tastes salty to me now. My doctor told me that this might happen but he said that I might have a metallic taste. I had no idea that the salty taste would be so strong. When I got home and had some water I thought that there was something wrong with my water softener because the water tasted so salty. I had my wife taste it and she said that it was normal.

It seems that my surgery has been successful! Yesterday my hearing in the effected ear came back and everything is so loud around here.    ;D

The doc said that it would take a bit for the swelling to go down and that once it did I should be able to hear again. It did and I can. YaHooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well done doctor!  :hail:

I still have to take it VERY easy and can't go back to work till I see the doc on the 25th.

C, will there be any problem wearing ear plugs?

Once my ear drum heals up completely I should be able to wear ear plugs again. I'm actually amazed that I can hear as well as I can from that ear since the ear drum has packing against it that won't be removed till the 25th.

I got the total costs yesterday for my ear surgery and related stuff. ~$25k. I'm actually surprised that it didn't cost more than that.

After my health insurance pays their share, my out of pocket expense is under $200. Not bad and I can hear very well now from my 'bad' ear.    :)

I had my post-op appointment with my ear surgeon yesterday. He removed the packing from my ear and tested my hearing. The packing removal wasn't as much fun as you'd think...    :o

Anyway, my hearing is VERY much improved! 30 to 40 dB! If you don't know, the dB scale is logarithmic and a 40 dB increase is HUGE!

The doc has cleared me to resume my normal activities. ;D

After I explained to him that I'll be retiring at the end of the year and that I have a BUNCH of sick leave that I have to use or lose. He recommended that I take one more week off. He even faxed this order to my department.     ;)
