Title: 1986 kawasaki concours zg1000 case meter
Post by: mrhedges on September 07, 2022, 09:12:41 AM
So on my way across the country my speedo stops working. I finally get around to checking it today by putting a drill on the cable. The actual meter on the dash works so I'm guess the case meter on the front wheel is bad. Simple enough fix and much easier/cheaper then replacing the dash...the problem is I can't find one! I looked up the part number on Parts Fish and plugged it into ebay thinking that I'd find a used but working part or maybe even a new OEM one and I only found one from a 2005 which according to ebay won't fit my bike. Here is the part number CASE-ASSY-METER GEAR 41078-1061 Anyone have one laying around? I guess I could use my phone but I prefer having the one on the dash and I use my odometer to track my MPG too.

You can check if the driver gear is spinning by putting bike on CS, jacking up the front end, removing the cable and shining a light in there while the front wheel is spun.

Once you take it off there is a drive flange to check the health of as well.

Looks like:

86-93 flanges are all the same.
I don't know about 94-06 flanges but assume they will be different since the wheel and bearings are different.

The speedo drive however may well be the same across all of the years even though the 94-06 has a different part number (41078-1101)
Does anyone know if the front axle diameter is the same between the 86-93 and 94-06?

There is a new (old stock) 41078-1061 available here in the UK.

or a used one from France

Theres one here in the states for sale (where I live) from a 2005 for $25 so it would be great to know if I could just use that one.

The receiver flanges fit all year C10's.

The speedo drive is DIFFERENT for 86-93 and 94-06 on account of a beefier front axle diameter for 94-06.

Please tell me it's not just a broken cable.

No, as the 2005 has a larger axle diameter than you '86.

However it may be possible to machine a sleeve to take up the slack?

Pics of a 94-06 model are below.  I could get the part out and roughly measure the ID if needed.

George makes a good point.  Have you pulled the cable from the sleeve to check its entire length for issues?
