Please tell me I might be ok
« on: April 16, 2021, 08:32:03 PM »
2006 ZG1000
my first oil filter change, I think I put the flat washer on top of the bolt, and not over the spring as it should be
Went to start it and a round clunk.  Now won't turn over at all. Running just fine before oil change
Any ideas what o do, where to start.
Thanks so much for being here and willing to help
Cheers

What exactly do you mean by 'went to start and a round clunk'?

The purpose of the washer is to prevent the spring digging into the rubber seal at the base of the filter element.  Fitting it anywhere else would not cause your problem.  Did the engine spin over?  It sounds more like you have  a starting issue, assuming the sump is full of oil.

The oil light should go off about 15 seconds after starting when the filter is replaced.

I just saw the replies in the other area.

So the engine did not crank over, you just got a loud metallic clunk when you tried to o start it, is that correct?

How long was it between the last time it was running and when this happened?

It ran perfect just before oil change

Did you do anything else than the oil change?
When you tried to crank it, did the engine rotate at all?
If yes, could be a hydrolock.

If no, {kinda doubtful}, but possibly the starter is hung up?
Try putting the engine in gear and rock the bike. (gently)

Last thought; Did you remove and replace both drain plugs?
If so, was one longer than the other? (Not probable, but it happened to me once)
{Occasionally, some owners replace the plugs and a past owner might have installed 1 that is too long}
If one was longer, there is a slight possibility that it is too long and you put it in the wrong location.

Hey thanks all so much .
So I opened up the oil filter again, let it drain, took it all out made sure everything was in the right place, reinstalled it, and it started right up, purring like a kitten, VERY STRANGE
