There's quite a few 'dead' bases around, Steve.  All the ones we were at in the 50/60's are all dead except for Westover, but that's an Air Force Reserve base now.  Not the same as it was way back when.  The only active official base my dad started his career on is Ellsworth.

Joint basing took Pope, it BRAC'd in 05, was absorbed by Bragg and is now an Army Airfield, much like Simmons. Now home to 440th AW (Reserve), a couple of STS's, 18th ASOG and I think the Combat Control School. Tried to get there, would have been a great job but there just aren't any open positions.

Jim's right, there's a lot of them around. I went to the NTC at Ft Erwin in 99 and we flew into the Southern California Logistics Airport, formerly know as George AFB. Wandering around the base I was like a ghost town, houses sitting empty, playground equipment laying around, just really weird.

George is really creepy...  At least at Westover, quite a bit of base housing has been upgraded and re-purposed for civilian usage and is now 'off base'.    Looks better than what I remember.  We visited an open house there back a few years ago and located our old housing unit.  I find that amazing I remembered where it was as it 1967 when we there last.

Finished a job in Warrenton and came home via Culpeper.  Stopped at one of the antique stores there and picked up two books...'Messengers of the Lost Battalion'.   551st Parachute Infantry to be exact.  They were thrust into the middle of the Battle of Bulge.

Second book was 'Queen of the Skies'....Everything you wanted to know about the Lockheed Constellation.

Can't wait to read both books.

My back pain is muscular in nature, a good thing really, its because my muscle is in spasms that it hurts, a few days of muscle relaxers, a few beers, or gin & tonics, and my back usually "pops" and I have a soreness, with the muscle spasming, but not sharp pain, some Tylonol and I'm much better, its just aggravating.

Much better than possum but I prefer venison. :)

Out of the ashes comes life....Jack Pines are propagated by fire.  It opens the cones.

If you cook them in a wok with baby seal fat, they taste almost like California condor. ;)

A meal like that would have me loosening my black rhino hide belt a couple of notches.

Of course if this meal were outside in cold climate I'd eat it while wearing a panda bear coat.
