Title: When is a new fuel filter required?
Post by: jonathan on January 13, 2022, 09:15:18 AM
I have a 2008 with about 120,000 km on it (about 75,000 miles). Removing the tank feels a little intimidating so I don't want to do it if I don't have to. When does everyone think would be a good time to change the fuel filter? Now, or am I still OK for a couple of years?

You will be ok until it is completly plugged up and stops running😏

I just did mine at 80k. I had cleaned it at about 40k. Had plastics off so I figured I would change it. Pretty easy job. Mine was not plugged at all. Looked rough but mostly just discolored.

You do not You don't have to remove much to get the tank off. Video somewhere that shows it.

The tank is really easy to remove. Only the black plastics at front need to come off; disconnect 2 small hoses & plugs at rear; raise tank almost vertical at front to access fuel line to remove;  lift tank off bike.

Make it easier by running the tank down until Low Fuel shows first.
Much easier to deal with when it only has 8lbs of gas in it.
I did mine at 70k miles and it needed it, badly.
I'll do it again at 100k and every 50k after that if I get that far.

The when part is highly variable as it depends a lot on how clean the fuel is going into the bike and what kinds of conditions you ride and store your bike in.  I can imagine some scenarios where one tank of contaminated fuel could plug up the tiny fuel filter in the tank.

I've done a few of these and the bikes were all in the mid-20K mile range and they all needed the filter changed.  So at 75K miles and almost 15 years on your C14, I'd say a change is needed for sure.

MY first 08 got plugged up at about 130,000 miles while 500 miles from home. I was able to free it up and get home by putting a bottle of fuel cleaner in the next tank of gas. Changed filter when I got home. My 2nd 08 is at 108,000 now, I just keep a new filter on the ready.

Just to be cautious. I think I will drain the tank and change it before next riding season. I park it with the tank full, so I will have to siphon the fuel out.

Yes, 120k is too long. It is pretty easy.
