State Farm - Drive Safe & Save with In-Drive program

I received a letter from my State Farm insurance agent about a new program they are offering. A device is plugged into the data port of your car and it reports on some of your driving habits via the cell phone network as you dirve. A 10% discount is offered right off the bat with up to a 50% discount offered at the next renewal.

That's what I'm worried about. I don't do many 'jack rabbit starts' or hard stops but I may accidently stray over the speed limit from time to time.

Thats kinda what I am worried about.  I would hate to go from 10% discount to "oh we are sorry, we need to raise you rates" :-\

Just think-you have one of these and are doing 2 over the limit. Someone pulls out in front of you and a crash results. State Farm denies the claim-you were speeding.

I got a real bad feeling about these kinds of things.  I can tell you where Progressive and State Farm should put them, but then I'd have to ban myself.

-%10 today, + %30 tomorow comes to mind, I do 5-10 over as routine, but keep it at that.  I let traffic dictate my speed, never the slowest, never the faststest, but somewhere on the topside.  Part of my survival strategy is to stay ahead of trouble...Now, if I could only install it in my wifes car?  Close to free comes to mind.

My local LEO friend tells me that most cops in this area will let you slide if you're under 70 in a 55, so, I keep it under 70.

Years ago this would be true of my wife, but now it seems that my heavy foot has been somewhat contagious.

That's a good point and while I don't have that, many of us have GPS units that can track that kind of thing and then could be held in evidence against us, I reckon.  Heck, your SA phone could be tracking that as well, tarnation!  But I drive a Prius and from what I understand there is something like a black box in the car that tracks certain events.  Came to light during the unintended acceleration thingy....  Big brother has us by the short hairs if you use any technology today.

I believe that many, if not most insurance companies offer something similar.  My agent tried to offer it in exchange for cheaper rates for teenaged drivers.  Again, the invasion of privacy is inevitable, but no reason to capitulate without a struggle.

At least my C-10 isn't sophisticated enough to have data recording...
 ;D

Same with at least two of my other vehicles.  Analog speedometers rule!

My phone is password protected and encrypted (work)... I wonder where the law stands when they ask for the phone, I hand it over, and I refuse to give password since it has access to work related sensitive information on it.  :o  Hmmmmmm.
