I don't know who is a Lee Child fan but his Jack Reacher novels are great. The main characters name is Jack Reacher (duh). One reason that gives me pause on this is the following stats:
Name: Jack Reacher (no middle name)
Born: October 29th
Measurements: 6’5″, 220-250 lbs., 50″ chest
Hair: Dirty-blond
Eyes: Ice blue
Clothing: 3XLT coat, 95 cm. pants’ inseam
What he doesn’t have: A driver’s license, Federal benefits (doesn’t want them), tax returns (doesn’t do them; he hasn’t filed taxes since he left the Army).
Me thinks that the diminutive Tom Cruise comes up short (literally) on all the stats. I think he is supposed to be about 5'7". Don't get me wrong, I like Cruise, but this does not seem to be the right part for him. A common theme throughout the novels has this great big guy scaring people and bouncing heads because of his size. One person that I think could have played this role is Ray Stephenson. He is a big guy and he played the starring role in the second Punisher movie.

Pretty sure Ron Perlman could do that role, as he's not exactly a small guy, and seems to fit the 'knocking heads together' bit pretty well.

OMG no!
Tom Cruise has the face but not the build of a Jack Reacher. Reacher's character is more physically imposing without saying anything. Reacher's literally has an arm reach that has disabled opponents with one blow.
Having listened to Lee Child audiobooks while riding and reading paperbooks when not, I appreciate Reacher's loner character.
However, he is written as a physically imposing character. Cruise ain't that tall.
Going to be interesting which story gets picked; 61 Hours, One Shot, Tripwire, or something else.
Since I read all of the John Carter of Mars books by Edgar Rice Burroughs, I have yet to see how that movie compares. I understand three stories were combined and the graphics are good.
Similarly, I wonder how any movie project will treat Child's books.
Looking forward to it. :)

Good Lord, Tiny Tom as Reacher?
Maybe someone like Hugh Jackman,Daniel Craig(he may be a bit short though) or Ben Roberts-Smith but certainly not Tom Cruise.

One interview I read Tom Cruise said that he had talked with Lee Child and he approved it. He said that If Child had not approved it then he wouldn't have done it because he too is familiar with the character.

Well, I suppose if the did some Lord Of The Rings height magic, maybe. The question is (if you went the CGI route to make Tom look bulker/taller), could Tom pull off the mannerisms that go with being a big brute?

Agreed, Tom C. ain't no Jack, not in body, nor face, nor voice.
Good example of why people say the book was better than the movie.
One person that I think could have played this role is Ray Stephenson.

If it really must be a pretty boy actor then maybe Chris Hemsworth. Ray Stephenson would be better.

NO, NO ,NO. As far as Child agreeing, $$$$$$$$$. All I can say is, think of how they messed up Cussler's Dirk Pitt by having that ninny Mathew McConneghy(sp) star. Oh well, look how many Batman there have been, maybe next movie will be another guy.

Lee Child is a brilliant writer. I've read all the Reacher novels several times. I had been anxiously waiting, and dreading, the day they would finally make a movie. I just knew something like this would happen. Hollywood always screws up the movie version. Like was said before, its all about the $$$. And Cruise is a huge draw. From what I've read, Reacher isn't even going to be portrayed as a former MP major, just an "investigator" of some sort. Most of the cast has been announced already. There are some fairly big things missing. I have not decided if I am going to watch the movie or not,.

He is certainly big enough and has the blind hair, but I am not sure he has the chops for this kind of roll, IMNSHO.

As Child explained wryly during a recent book tour stop in Chicago, the search for an actor to play Reacher took place over a number of years. Hundreds of names were “bandied about,” as he put it: Liam Neeson? Daniel Craig? Hugh Jackman? Gerard Butler? Russell Crowe? Josh Brolin? Jason Statham? How about a black Reacher, maybe Will Smith or Denzel Washington?
But the search repeatedly stalled over finding someone with Reacher’s imposing size: 6-feet-5-inches tall, 250 pounds. “It was completely impossible to find a physical facsimile of Jack Reacher in Hollywood,” Child said. “There are none—not even remotely close. The people you think are 6-feet-five and 250 pounds are not. Most of them are at least seven or eight inches shorter than the fictional Reacher. It got to the point where people were saying, ‘What about this guy who’s nine inches shorter than Reacher? He’s better than this other guy who’s nine and a half inches shorter than Reacher.’ ”
He obviously didn't search around much. The person I thought could have played it is Ray Stevenson. He is about 6'3".

They didn't pick Cruise to stay true to the books. The chose him becuase the movie will then serve the widest audience. Guys will see it for the shooting, and the girls will come along to stare at Cruise.

Don't get me wrong. I like him as an actor. He has done some great roles. And he will probably make this a great, fun, movie. I will go see it for that, but he is like the opposite of Reacher.

Thank you, after reading a bunch of Cussler's books I was compeletly dissapointed in that movie as well as the actor who played Al Giordino
I haven't read any Reacher books but I know what y'all are talking about, once you described what Reacher is supposed to look like, what a let down.

Cruise is a fantastic actor, but agree that he doesnt match the book description. Hugh Jackman would've been a great choice IMHO, and would have drawn a big following, but Cruise will bring a huge following and I bet the movie will be really good.

What about the guy on NCIS LA? Ice cube or Ice tea, or is that the guy on NBC? LL Cool J or some such, he's got the wrong color hair but I think he's more beleivable than little boy Cruise, who, if you watch all the clips, is never standing next to anybody, even the women, so you can't see how short he is. Its all about money, thats Hollywood, can't blame them, gotta go with what sells.

It appears that not many people have seen it, already being considered a box office flop. So much for star power bringing in money, better to go with a less known actor that fits the "actual part and description" of the books. The author was an idiot for approving what he did......idiot.

The author, Lee Child, has a cameo in the movie as a desk sergeant who gives Jack Reacher his personal belongings back when he leaves jail.

Saw the movie opening day. Haven't read the books yet -- may do so now -- but I enjoyed the heck out of the film. I though Cruise did a fine job of action/adventure dude once again -- I also enjoyed Knight and Day a couple of years back. No, he isn't huge, but I imagine a large part of the book version is the sharp wit and keen intelligence of the character, both of which are here in spades.

I would say that watching the movie before reading the book is a good thing. I have read all of the Reacher novels and after that, in terms of size, Tom does not stack up. I could see that it is a good movie on it's own, but if you try to compare the characters it may leave something to be desired.
My daughter gave me a $30 gift card for Regal Theaters. I used $7 yesterday to go and see Django. Good flick. Now my next use will probably be the Reacher movie.

I don't disagree with your conclusion but that's not Russell Crow standing next to him in this picture. I believe it's Scott Grimes as Will Scarlet.

Ditto! Although Durand is a big dude, I always thought his role choice and performance was somewhat goofy.

He is a much better choice than Dolph Lundgren would be. ;) And yes that is Scott Grimes, but Crowe would look like a midget too. Totally screwed up with Cruise, still blows my mind they choose him for this role. I hear the movie was pretty damn good all things considered, but it sure screws the vision of who Reacher should be.
