For 1994 and newer, it's easier if the upper fairing is removed.
Remove side fairings.
Remove inner fairings (the pockets).
Remove the dash cowl, don't forget to unplug the clock).
Remove the mirrors (2 10mm *bolts* each side).
Remove the two upper fairing bolts near the valve cover.
Remove the two 10mm *nuts* each side that were hidden by the mirror, leave the clips in.
Disconnect the headlight plug.
Hold the fairing at the top front as you remove the two 'clips', slip the fairing forward and off.
To remove the cluster:
Disconnect the two harness plugs on the left side.
Disconnect the speedo drive.
Remove the two 10mm bolts at the lower outside corners of the cluster.
With the cluster on the bench, there are three(?) nuts that hold the cluster to the metal bracket. Remove them, and find a washer that will fit around the steel bushings (3/8" plain washer?) so when reassembled this washer will bear on the rubber, and not the bushing. Reassemble.
