Title: VW bugs and movies
Post by: JP on March 26, 2015, 11:13:06 AM
I've been off work due to an injury for about the last 8 weeks. I also can't do much other than watch TV.
So... I always kind of noticed but I'm now totally convinced of a conspiracy.
VW bugs (the old ones) are in ALOT of movies. I mean ALOT of movies. New movies and old movies.  Not major roles but mostly cameos.
I'm watching Footloose and sure as shat 2 VWs. Kevin Bacon drives one and there was one in the parking lot of the local burger stand.
Anyone else notice this? What could it mean? ;)

I think it means you need to get Netflix and watch something made less than 30 years ago...

Opps, I added new and old movies while you where responding.
But on that note, brand new movies. It's seriously freaky. Watch for them in the background of any movie you will be amazed. :_shudder_Emoticon

Volkswagen made over 21 million Beetles during its production run. I see them everywhere in Northern California, so I guess they were just so good, they keep going and going!  8)

They stopped building Classic Beetles in 2004. These were built all over the world, but the Mexican production line ran the longest.

A new Documentary about the VW Bugs/Beetles should be released soon (they are still aiming for Summer 2015)...
https://www.facebook.com/TheBugMovie (https://www.facebook.com/TheBugMovie)

I also stumbled across this: Why Bumblebee isn't a Beetle in the recent Transformers movies...

https://volkswagenutah.wordpress.com/2014/06/24/transformers-vw-beetle/ (https://volkswagenutah.wordpress.com/2014/06/24/transformers-vw-beetle/)

The 'old model' Beetles continue to make appearances every now and then in a handful of recent movies and on TV.  The most recent example I can think of is Granite Flats (a TV series that currently airs on BYU TV), which is set in the '60s, and features at least one Beetle.

I'd guess that the Classic Beetle may have made one or more appearances in Mad Men.  I don't have cable though, so I haven't seen that show.

I will say, I used to drive a bug back in High school (1835 motor, dual carbs, Porsche wheels). I loved that car. I've had two fiberglass Dune Buggies. I not only got an education in mechanics but looked cool doing it 8).Man I want another bug, but motorcycles are the only love I have room or time for.
Setup right and with good motor, you'll see that it WAS Dr Porsche that designed this little wonder.

The reason is probably because when they made the old movies, that was what everybody was driving. In the new movies, the bugs are now cool so they put them in.

Yeah, I think the Jettas are all made in Puebla, Mexico no?

I have two Golfs, and I believe they were both built in Brazil. I had a Jetta wagon for a while, and it came all the way from Germany as I understand it.

I believe the first non-Beetles....like the VW Rabbit, were all built in Pennsylvania no?

Yes, at least they were. I'm not sure about now though.

All the MklV Jettas that I have (currently six of them in some form or another) were all made in Mexico except the wagon. That was built in Germany. It also has more rattle noises than the others.

First car was a 1959 Beetle. 36 hp, 6 volt and stupid fast. lol..

I currently own a 1960 Beetle. Yes, 36hp, converted to 12 volt, maybe 60mph on a good day, down a hill, off a cliff with a tail wind. When you drive there are only 2 positions for the accelerator pedal, all the down when you are rolling or all the way up when you are stopped. It sounds like you are going 80mph, but when you look at the speedometer, you are only going 25mph! There is no tachometer. The New Beetles are simply reskinned Golf's. Really a styling exercise for a particular buyer, mainly women they found and older people, another reason they redesigned it a few years ago to appear more muscular as they said less and less men were buying them, even with the Diesels.

I think Disney made a couple movies with a Bug in it.
