Blue Tooth and audible alerts for radar detectors
« on: March 02, 2013, 11:06:19 AM »
I would like to use Blue Tooth technology to set up helmet audible alerts with in helmet speakers or ear buds for my Escort 9500ix detector. I do not currently use an intercom ( prefer no conversations during riding or cell phones). For those forum members with experience would the following devices work? Have you found a better solution?

transmitter: http://www.amazon.com/TaoTronics-TT-BA01-Bluetooth-Transmitter-Players/dp/B004B8GF7Y/ref=pd_sim_e_1

receiver: http://www.amazon.com/TaoTronics-Bluetooth-Receiver-Laptops-Transmitter/dp/B006IJJH7O/ref=pd_sim_e_4

helmet speakers or buds

Do you think that this set up will work? Will all Blue Tooth Dongle transmitters transmit the audio alert of a radar detector?

I can't say about those devices but what I recently purchased (not just for radar but will work w radar or GPS) is the Sena SR10. You run the audio cable from radar and or GPS to the SR-10 (which is waterproof and you can strap to your handelbars). You also need the Sena SMH-10 on the helmet (Bluetooth device). The SR 10 will pass everything to your SMH 10, thru bluetooth. You can also use for B2B comm. with a Motorola walkie talkie  it (SR10) comes w a PTT button also.    It is a lot of gadgets if you are not wanting to be able to use the blue tooth for music or phone. The advantage is no wires to your helmet and the speakers that come w the Sena SMH-10 will fit in the helmet and sound great and you dont have to worry about ear buds sliding out.   The battery's last for over 8 hours for me playing music all day and and using B2B comm.  You can have 2 devices plus a radio like Motorols plugged in to it and can set priority of alerts or over-rides.  i.e phone proirity over Motorola, or radar over GPS

Those devices you me mentioned look  cheap enough to try. The question is if you are using the Bluetooth w your phone or streaming music will this device interrupt the music to give you the alarm signal for Radar detector. Only way to know.

Thanks for the info. I would use this setup only for RD audible alerts, no music or phone. Do you think the RD alerts will be transmitted? I prefer audible alerts instead of visual alerts like H.A.R.D., Vizalert,Marc Parnes and I do not like the idea of the Radar Screamer system. These components are cheap and small and if they work it may be a solution to receiving RD alerts effectively.

I think it will.  So you will pair the transmitter and receiver, plug ear buds to the receiver, plug a 3.5 audio jack from the radar to the transmitter.  Seems like a no brainer.  Other guys I ride with use similar set up wired not bluetooth to get audible alerts thru their comm set up.   Post the results so we can see if it's something others would like. You could use it for GPS if you don't have radar and want to get turn by turn.

I'm pretty sure the signal will be mono. At least mine is, left speaker and I have tried a mono to stereo adapter at the Escorts audio jack and still just get mono.

I tried I don't know how many of those bluetooth transmitter things.  Either the battery didn't last but 5-6 hours or they would auto shut off after 10 minutes of no signal, then 15 miles down the road you get hit with a radar and then a ticket.  None of them worked, so I got the SR10, I already had the SMH10 and haven't looked back.  I run my radar and gps through the SR10 and I can hear them both if the gps is talking and I get a radar hit.  I also can hear the radar or gps if having a conversation with another sena headset.

I know it is a lot of money, but if I had just gone with the sr10 to begin with, I would have saved a ton of money.

I wondered if not having a continuous signal from the radar detector would be a problem. I plugged a set of earbuds into the RD and only have audio in the left ear also which is OK. I may have to look at the Sena devices.

Well I just installed some ear buds in the helmet and ran the wire and connect to the RD. I am tethered for the moment but hardly notice it while riding. I snake the wire from the helmet down the inside of my left jacket sleeve and plug into the RD jack (RD on left side of bike).
I didn't want to spend a ton on the Sena unit since I don't listen to music when I ride or use an intercom set up and I gather that the cheap transmitter and receivers that I mentioned earlier would not be reliable with an intermittent signal from the RD.

For years I rode with one speaker in the left side of my helmet with a wire connected straight to the RD.  Didn't even run it down the sleeve, just let it lay down behind the tank bag.  Worked great and when I got off the bike just unplugged it from the RD. Cheap and easy.

Same hear. Radio shack speaker left side, jack in the helmet, corded to RD. $10 and an hours time. Added a gps so I ran RD and GPS through an amp and then to the helmet speaker.

I stream audio via my Scala so I made a plug-in 130db screamer for mine.
