One thing I really miss about my ZRX is having a real helmet lock.
Anyway, I searched the pre-forum-crash stuff and mostly found people either using a license plate mounted lock or some home-brew solution. But I just found this online today:
http://projektd.com/product_info.php?products_id=163 (http://projektd.com/product_info.php?products_id=163)
Seems like exactly what I have been looking for (well, except that I doubt they can be keyed to the bike key)- strong, simple, nice looking, convenient, not in the way. I sent them an Email asking about how exactly they are mounted and what they are compatible with, since it is unclear on the site. Has anyone purchased/tried this model yet? Do you know of anything else similar? Thanks.
-
Looks pretty good, I use a cable lock.

I'm using that Projekt d lock, it installed in minutes, goes under the luggage rack and came with the full hardware kit of bolts and washers.
If you don;t lock a helmet you won't even notice it's there, for all you know the bike came factory with these locks.
The wife is happy too with this farkle, when making a stop we can now leave the helmets on the bike safely and she doesn't need to carry it around anymore :chugbeer:

I don't mind carrying my helmet around. Makes a great shopping basket . . . ;D

How did it attach? (I don't know why they don't have pictures of the uninstalled unit or instructions on the site) Do you remove the stock rack and sandwich it under and put them back or something??
Yeah, they look practically OEM, which is why they are so attractive...
-
Looks like it attached to the bottom of whatever rack you're using. They say it attaches to the 'standard luggage rack' as well.
-
The Projektd double lock was one of the first farkles I bought, and I, who has to use duct tape to fix anything, installed it in minutes, that's how easy it was.
-
Tada! They Emailed me the manual and, yep, it looks like a piece of cake. I attached the one-page PDF to this message in case anyone else finds it useful. I think I am going to buy it now...
-
I assume you have seen the posts of people using a used set of helmet locks from a C-10 or other bike. You can buy the locks from e-bay pretty cheap. Heres mine:
-
The project D one installs easy, and they work fine. You just have another key to haul around. For me its bike key, key for the lock on the front rotor, and now a helmet lock key. ;D
-
I also have the helmet locks with their large luggage rack and backrest. its the best looking coolest system i have found, i highly recommend it. Its stylish and my wife loves it. the bike is made in japan and imho all the american made backrests(sissybars) look like they belong on a harley. this one is smokin!

Yep- I have two of those things. I used to use them on my ZRX to lock the zippers of my Ventura bags to the opposite carry handles.

+1 and a plus is the extreme COOL factor when your helmet is held to your bike with a gun lock sporting logo like Glock, Beretta, Smith & Wesson, Magnum Research, pick your poison.
Now, if you are a blooming liberal, you could always paint over it in pink.

Mine are from my cheap gun- the Taurus, so there is no logo... just plain red ;)
-
Hehe, better than pink, I guess... 8)

I like Taurus. Recently bought a little .22 at a gun show which turned out to be inoperative. Even though the gun had clearly been around the block several times, they fixed it for free, had it back to me within two weeks, and gave it a good cleaning and oiling while they had it. That's a great warranty and customer service!
-
That's better than Browning's servicing...
-
There's a stupid thing under the seat?? :-[
-
+1 on having-and liking-the Projekt D. Very easy install, very easy to use. I attached the key to my fob.

I just ordered them last night and they have already shipped this morning. Had no idea they were in Taiwan, but they had EXCELLENT communication and customer service so far and apparently ultra-fast shipping!

I've purchased a couple farkles from ProjektD and every time am overly impressed with their communication and fast shipping!

I wonder if those can be re-keyed to take the stock C14 key?
-
The helmet lock keys are way more substantial than the fob key. The locks are spring loaded, so there's a fair amount of resistance when turning the key. I'd be concerned that the thin fob key would snap in the lock.
I'm resigned to having to carry two pocket items whenever I get on the bike; the transponder and a ring that has my house key, the fob key, the top case key, the helmet lock key, and the key to my seaside mansion in Malibu. 8)
-
I just got one of these, combination so no key, but anybody with a hammer could probably open it in short order. Should be enough to deter casual theft though.

-
I bought this lock. I also bought the Givi 46 along with the additional bracket. Rather than mounting it as per directions, I simply removed each lock from lock bracket, and mounted them to the Give suport hardware.
It looks good and lots of room to hang your helmet.
I will try to post a pic.

If that's the case , they could cut it off with a knife, since most people don't carry hammers.

One thing I really miss about my ZRX is having a real helmet lock. The C-14 only has that stupid under-seat thing which is impossible, especially since I seem to have TREMENDOUS problems removing/installing the seat, which got even much, much worse with the Sargent seat.
What thing under the seat? I didn't know that there was a helmet lock under there?
-
Surprise!
There is a helmet hook on the left side rail under the seat. The theory is that you remove the seat, hook the helmet buckle over the hook, and then lock the seat down on it. Far from ideal, but a nice touch (if you can get to it).
That's the first I've heard of this! I'll have to take a looksee the next time I have the seat off.
Here's one for you. Did you know about the lil 'rings' inside the bags to hook things like a stretchy cargo net onto?
-

Yes, but only because I saw that thread in the pre-forum-blowup about the cargo nets! I doubt I would have ever known otherwise.
The forum has provided SO MUCH valuable info it is amazing. Sometimes TOO much ???

+2 on liking-the Projekt D. The main bracket and mounting screws are stainless steel. Not included but should be are 4 washers that go under the heads of the screws. The screws are long enough. Installed it looks OEM. I ordered on last Saturday. It arrived on Friday.

Interesting. The instructions they sent me before I ordered showed they included the 6 necessary washers. And there are no screws, just four replacement bolts...
One week shipping from Taiwan is not bad! I ordered mine Monday, so perhaps they will arrive Monday. It hit USA (San Fransisco) on Wednesday. I have never ordered anything international before.

They do supply 6 washers. Those go between the bike frame and the plastic rack to take into account thickness of the helmet lock bracket that is sandwiched in between at 2 of the 4 bolt locations.
I just got lucky on the shipping. It cleared customs very quickly. It's always a crap shoot on how fast that happens.

I have a couple of these locks, based on a carbiner design, also handy for leaving your jacket with the bike if you thread the wire strop through the sleeves of your jacket . http://www.helmetlok.com/uk/buy.php (http://www.helmetlok.com/uk/buy.php)

Here's one that's similar but without the cable, you could add your own I guess.

Everything I buy from ProjektD sucks:
a. those damn emails they send everyday to communicate on shipping
b. too cheap to include manuals so they pdf them and send via email
c. much to high quality for the stuff I buy
d. they precision engineer every damn thing including bolts and washers
I have the helmet lock as well. Planned a Saturday morning to install and the damn thing only took 3 minutes. The design is poor as, after you install it, you can't tell that you added a new farkle to your bike. And lastly I don't know why they included two locks which seem to be over-engineered again for strength and durability.
I've found these problems to be persistent with the 8 accessories I have ordered from them.

After having to dig out my cable lock a couple of times over the weekend and the rave reviews on the ProjektD locks, I just ordered em.

I placed an order with ProjektD this morning (my first with them) for their helmet locks and the process seemed to go without a hitch. Within moments after I placed the order I received a notice from my credit card company telling me of the charge, the amount was correct.
I just checked my account at the ProjektD website and there is no record of my order nor have I received a confirmation of my order.
Those of you who have ordered with them, after you got past the Paypal screen, was there more to do at the ProjektD site to complete the order?
-
Conrad,
I don't remember the exacts but do remember it was pretty straight forward through the ordering process. I think paying is the very last step in the order process right?? You should get an email from them shortly confirming you order, go outside and check your front porch, it probably already delivered... ;)
-
Thanks ZG, I was worried when I didn't see anything in My Account about the order. I'll give 'em some time before I panic.
*checking front porch*

They're in Taiwan, so it's the middle of their night right now... give it about 6 hours.

Got an email from Projekt D this morning, it seems there was a problem with my order yesterday and it didn't get entered automatically. All is well now and my helmet locks have already been shipped. Nice service!

The locks arrived Monday, but they required a freaking signature. Since the post office has WONDERFULLY CONVENIENT hours, I didn't get them until today.
Exactly as advertised, although they included no instructions (they did send them the PDF I posted earlier). Like others said, it was maybe a 10 min install at most. You will spend most of that time trying to line up the washers :) It included TWO SETS (4) of keys. Looks good/stealthy, feels solid, I like the turn-just-a-little-to-activate key action too.

The Sargent is hard to take off and put on - especially when I have my duffel buggied on it. :)
I ordered the ProjektD on a Friday. It shipped from Asia on Monday and was delivered Friday - four days later!
The unit looks and feels high quality. I've not put it on as the bike is in for the 15K service. The lock will not accept the C14 key. Next week I'm going to check with my locksmith to see if I can replace their locks with ones the C14 key.
They emailed me the installation instructions after I ordered. They are posted on the forum, attached to reply #7 in this thread (http://zggtr.org/index.php?topic=293):

Not yet, must be because of the holiday eh? They were in San Fran on Saturday.
-

Got it yesterday. Top notch quality and they look stock. The only complaint that I have is the sharp edges on the mounting bracket. I hates me some sharp edges because I usually end up getting cut somehow. I'm gonna take a file to those edges today and get this thing mounted.
-
All this positive talk convinced me .... I ordered the Projekt D helmet locks this morning. I also added the Bigfoot sidestand foot base. This is the second time I have ordered from Projekt D and I dont anticipate any problems as the first order went smooth as glass.

I got the edges filed and installed it yesterday. It looks great. I asked my wife what she thought. She took a look and said that she didn't see anything new. If that's not an endorsement for it looking stock then I don't know what is.
It was a 10 minute job, 15 if you had to get your own beer while you installed the lock. My advice is to have a cold beer in your hand before you start.
-
Good advice!
-
I ordered one also.
I Was getting tired of having to unlock/open the saddlebag to store my helmet. The helmet loops, located under the seat, didn't work with my helmet without an extender, so I finally caved and ordered something that should have came with the bike to begin with...
-

??? What ????

My Projekt D helmet locks arrived today (actually yesterday, but I wasnt home and it needed a signature). But the reason for my post is that my locks are of the same style as my bike keys, meaning the offsets are on the same sides. I placed one of the Projekt D provided keys in my saddlebag lock and it goes in and out with ease. So ........ does that mean I can modify the helmet locks to match my bike keys? and if so ..... how?

I just checked mine after reading your post. Mine are opposite offsets.

I just checked mine. The helmet key does, indeed, go right into the saddle luggage, which is surprising. But the bike key will not go into the helmet lock. The two keys are surprisingly similar- they are the same length to the shoulder, appear to be the same thickness, the offsets are the same. The primary difference is that the bike key appears to be 5 cylinder and the helmet lock 4 cylinder... although I am certainly no key/lock expert.
It would be GREAT if the helmet lock could be rekeyed (and just match the first 4 cylinders), but since the bike key won't physically go into it, that is probably not an option.

I think I will do just that. I'll ride by nd ask them what they think and post back the answer.
I mounted it all up today, pretty straight forward with no issues. When I first put it on though, I didn't like the chrome like finish showing down below my black Phil's rack. So I took it back off, scuffed it up some, and painted it black. Much better now.

I kinda thought the same thing about mine. Then I thought, besides me, who's gonna bend down that low and look under there to see the 'chrome'? I left it as is.

Your right, but it was my day off and I had the black paint handy, so I figured why not, it wont take much effort. I removed the locks, scuffed up all sides of the bracket with some sandpaper, and shot it with some spray can flat black. Becasue it was nearly 100 degrees in Florida yesterday, I allowed it to bake out there for about 6 hours and then bolted it back up. So yeah, I guess you could say it took me over 6 hours to do what should have taken 5 minutes, but the end result is more to my liking.
-
Do these only work on the OEM luggage rack? I have a Hepco Becker topcase and rack, so I'm wondering if that will be a problem.

I cant say one way or the other about your specific rack, but I use a Phil's Rack and it bolted up just fine. As long as your rack is straight along the bottom and doesnt do any funky dips, I think you should be OK.

Yes i did. I went to a locksmith here locally and he said that yes, looking at the the keys and locks, that it should be possible. He said that I would need to bring in the locks and leave them with him before he coud give a 100% certain answer, but most likely it would be no problem.

If you plan to do that, please do get the details and keep us posted! You also need to tell us the year of your bike (I think they keys are the same on all C-14's, but not positive).
-
Would definitely be cool if you could rekey the locks to work with the bike key. This Projekt D setup is one of the next farkles I plan to purchase.

I don't think that they are all the same, at least not the early C14s. I'm pretty sure that they have A and B keys and the difference is the offset of the key. My bike's key offest is different than the offset of the key for the locks.
