Title: ZG's full Ohlins setup and powder coat project
Post by: ZG on July 27, 2012, 08:17:03 PM
Hey brutha's, thought I'd start this as a pic depository for me throughout install etc and also for future reference for others...

Just bought a full Ohlins setup for my 09 ABS, Concours 14 rear shock arrived yesterday and ZX14 full forks today! (http://i1200.photobucket.com/albums/bb336/jaywilcox/crazy1.gif)

I bought both of these from Dan Kyle at Kyle racing, really great guy IMO, a very smooth transaction, great communication, and fast shipping, an *ALLSTAR* vendor IMO!! (http://i1200.photobucket.com/albums/bb336/jaywilcox/sdskja.gif)

Total cost was just under $3100 shipped.
(special thanks to Fred for setting up the current group buy discount on the rear shock, just tell Dan "GOC", but spell it backwards... ;) )

Dan's website is:
http://www.kyleusa.com/ (http://www.kyleusa.com/)

If you call him tell him Jay (aka ZG) sent you to him and he'll roll out the red carpet for ya...  ;)

Here's some pics of the parts arrived to wet your appetite... (http://i1200.photobucket.com/albums/bb336/jaywilcox/rockon.gif)

And I even got to use my favorite Kawi blanket, green on one side and black on the other...  8)

I only wish Steve lived closer to me so he could take some true "quality" pics that these parts deserve, all you get from me is my lame iphone pics, sorry...  :(

I'll keep posting more after install (which unfortunately wont be until the week after next due to some uncontrolled obstacles in my way....(http://i1200.photobucket.com/albums/bb336/jaywilcox/mad.gif))

Tell ya what Jay, I have a guy who just happens to love suspension setups!!  Give a ring and I'll let ya run a fast bike for a week or two while I do a coupla things for ya, I will get the suspension setup for a rider at 206 lbs plus gear, I'll wrack up a few thou on the odo, wear out a set of tires so you can give the Angels a shot (55s in the rear of course), and an honest opinion of how the new 'spension works ;D  Leave the CC in the bread warmer, I'll order up the LSLs and a set of matching EBC rotors for ya ;)

Thanks for the compliments guys, yep I'm pretty stoked about getting them on!!  :)

While the Connie is semi-disassembled I'm going to have the handle bars, risers, triple clamps, swing arm, and some other parts powder coated black, unfortunately my powder coater is out of town on vaca next week so I have to wait for the following week to do this... (http://i1200.photobucket.com/albums/bb336/jaywilcox/wait.gif)

I think the gold of the Ohlins will pop even more when surrounded in the black of the triple clamp, bars, and swing arm etc...  8)

Tell you what, i'll ride down there this weekend and we can tear it all down and install it.  I figure mines a black 09 with muzzy duals so I'm sure we couldn't mistakenly install them on the wrong bike.  ;)

Minor detail being i'll have to spend between now and next year cleaning mine to actually make it believable.

I was just saying yesterday that you should have just had you powder-coater do you stock forks in gold.  Think of the savings.

Trust me, if I wasn't having all the powdercoat work done I'd just have one of their other techs do the install for me. But the taredown for powdercoating and re-assemble is actually quite involved, especially for the rear swing arm which is all one piece for the shaft drive too... So for this level of detail I really only trust one dude to do it for me, he's the best IMO and unfortunately the one that broke his foot...  :(

Since they're gonna have it tore down that far, have them lube up the front and rear splines on the driveshaft with some of that Honda molly. Mine is about due, it's making those noises again.   :o

Here, this should give you guys an idea of the complexities for some of these parts that I'm having powder coated...  :(

The handle bars and rear sets etc are easy peasy, but these parts like the rear swing arm and bevel gear are a little more complicated pulling apart and putting back together, hence why I want my best tech doing the work...

I'd rather wait a couple more weeks and know it gets done not only right, but perfect!!

Were you able to get the fork oil out of the sheets before the Mrs. returned?

Shouldn't be an issue RC, powder coat holds up to high heat, hence why folks powder coat their motors.  :)

Normally I go along with any post about black and slow, but this is (or rather, has become) about DA BEARS,
so no, the super secret official BEARS (http://www.chicagobears.com/tradition/Uniform.asp) colors are Candy Neptune Blue (sometimes called Navy Blue by mistake) and Burnt
Orange.
Hmmmmm...an all Candy Neptune Blue C14 with Burnt Orange Ohlins, impossible of course without ZG's wallet. Still it
does delight the imagination.  :)

You can't count the one sunny 40 degree day every other month in the winter as riding year round!

What time you pickin'r up tomorrow? I'll be out by 10 or 11 and ready for a short ride.

Great lookin Bike ZG!! Would love to take er for a spin, and try out the new sus  ;D

Does Ohlins give recommendations on setup based on rider weight, luggage and passenger?? Or did you just dial it in based on your own feel/liking?

Again....sweet setup!!

They ask for your weight (and how often do you ride 2up etc) and then they spring them for you. I then had the sag set with me on the bike to get it even better after install. I did about 100 miles on it today and it felt amazing!!  :)  I'll keep running it as it is currently setup for awhile before making any other adjustments to the Ohlins, but yes you can tweak it to your liking all you want.

Jay, how are the adjustments on the forks?  I always loved GOOD rear shocks since the adjustments actually do something instead of just spinning around and sort-of working.   I can only imagine how it might be to do the same with a set of forks.

Well Jay, it looks great (of course), but I think you missed a spot.  :)

No really, what's that big shiny area between the calipers and the forks?  Maybe a little rattle can will fix that up?  ;)

Well now you need to stop farkling it, and just ride it.  Let me know when you plan on doing that, as I'm on vacation and looking for excuses to ride more.

Well... Not JUST Conrad's.

ZG... did you estimate what you spent on the fork/shock work including shop time (not including the powdercoat (tho I am curious)? For those who are planning to rob a bank win the lottery, it'd be good to know how big the ballpark is. Generalities and/or rounding up are fine (or PM me).

Just under $6500 for parts, labor, and powdercoat... Quite a bit of labor tied to the PC, I'd imagine... just a suspension swap would be a fraction of that. ZG... what do you think it would have been for just the suspension components/labor?

Powdercoating all the parts once removed from the bike was only $300, labor for the total project was 35 hours, lot's of detail ripping all the gearing apart etc, plus all the misc little parts like gaskets, seals, etc etc etc, plus the carbon fiber rear hugger...  :'(

I don't regret it a bit though, it turned out just as I had hoped it would! And I actually came in within a grand of budget, so I wasn't really shocked at the bill.  :)

Another perspective on a ride report...

School is now back on, our youngest just got her license this summer so she obviously wants to drive to school, the plan was for her to drive the Volvo (that has been our oldest daughters car) because the oldest will not be taking it with her to college, only catch is the oldest doesn't move down to U of O until next weekend and still works full time, hence the temporary car shortage because the youngest wants to drive mama's Accord to school...  :-\

Long story short, mama doesn't like to drive my truck (which I'm not driving anyways because it's sunny and high 80's here in the PNW :) ) so I said ya sure I can give you a "ride" to work...  ;D

Cranked the rear Ohlins 2 full turns, put mama on the back, the suspension worked awesome even 2up!  :)

Even mama said she thought it felt smoother, and trust me mama knows absolutley nothing about bikes or suspension...  :)

Now me and mama are quite happy with Ohlins!!  ;D  :hail:

Just don't let mama know how much it cost...  :-X ;D

So, the exterior is done, when ya gonna have some internal work done to make up for all the slowness ya forced on her?  I'm thinking some polished and plugged ZX14 TBs married with an Auto tune and a 75 shot of NOS.  Should make up for some of the lost power.  Or, you could just paint everything Neutron Silver, good for at least %99 power gain over what ya have now :o

FWIW, I could see that beut in some museum, they look so good sitting still, behind glass, in a humidity controlled environment free of things like bugs, road grime, and rain ;)  I do lay claim on the heated seat ;D

I'm sick today, but not so much I couldn't go juice the battery a little.......on the stationary charger that is.

It's a nice day for Oregon standards for this time of year.
Next month's  projects include: new seat, tires that don't give me the heebies in a wet turn and coming up with new excuses to go the long way to the market ::).

I have to come up to PDX in three weeks or so to scope out a pool table, might have to stop by ZG and eyeball your seat if possible, contemplating a Laam or Corbin.

You ahould do all hand laid CF bodywork. Imagine the weight savings......You could always pull a John Britten and make your own CF wheels too. That would help the handling of this bike so much.

There was a vendor doing carbon fiber if you sent the parts in to them.  NinjaWarrior1400 had that done with some of his bodywork.  I don't know if that information was lost on the old forum or still resides here.  I'll take a peak when I get time today.

Here's the link to where he was selling the bike and accessories.  It does say where they were done, though.

That's not actual carbon fiber. That's just an overlay on the original parts that simulates the look of carbon fiber, so there would be no weight saving just a signifigant increase in the CDI factor.

Yep, you're spot on.  However, if you are looking for the look then this might be one way to go.  As someone mentioned earlier, a true CF piece would be very expensive to fabricate I would think.

CF wheels would be way cool but I searched before and couldn't find anyone that made em for the C14...  :-\

I would be willing to bet you could get Dymag to make you a set for the right price........and obviously your obsession isn't limited by cubic dollars spent ;)

Wow...now I feel the need to go home and kick my plain jane black Connie over as I walk past her in the garage...and then go jump off a really low bridge so as to only impose pain and suffering and not death to mimick what my girl would do to me if I attempted even a fraction of this, J!!!

LMAO!!

Well, now at least I have "goals"...yeah, that's the ticket...GOALS!  Something to shoot for!

Ah, I can dream again...!!!   ;D

Amazing work...gorgeous.  Love those gold struts!!

Sadly, I told her the Connie was a 'road bike' and all the mods would be on the 9...oops!  I shoulda known better!!   >:(

Lots of great ideas, though, J!!  I will have to set out to do bits and pieces...

So, can I just take off the shaft cover and get it done or does it require a tear down like you went through?  Never get that through the CFO's office.   ::)

 ;D ;D ;D   Thanks CC!  :chugbeer:

Yes indeed, it was alot of work and $ but worth every penny IMO, I still really love how it turned out!  :)

As for the "shaft cover" it doesn't just come right off easy, I put some parts fish in the thread that shows all the many pieces to it, lots of labor...  :(

Welcome to the forum and happy hunting for farkles, lot's of knowledge on this forum, feel free to ask us all for help.

I just want to know what's next?  I think Jay should find some digital gauges or have them custom made and surrounded by CF, maybe make a shelf of sorts for all his other doo dads to blend everything together for a clean look.

Yep, an above gauges shelf made of CF, housing his GPS, a rear camera display screen, and since price is no object, a FLIR (http://www.flir.com/uploadedFiles/CS_EMEA/Application_Stories/Media/Downloads/Motorcycle_EN.pdf) display.  :D
