Title: What bike should you NOT have sold?
Post by: reesedp on May 16, 2011, 05:04:40 AM
I did this one way back when the first forum started and it was a lot of fun.  For me, it was my 1983 Yamaha XJ900RK, or Seca 900.  Had her for ten years, and two weeks after I sold her in 1999 a friend brought me a copy of Motorcyclist that listed it as number three of their top ten of all time to hold on to.  I would buy another one in a second if I had the chance.

I've owned several...GL500i, Voyager12, C10.   They were good while I had them but I'm glad I've moved on.

It would without a doubt be my beautiful 1983 Honda V45 Interceptor! I have regretted selling that bike since the say I sold her to move back north in 1985. People have suggested picking up a old used one and restoring her (like I'm doing with my 86 C10). But I don't do it because then it won't be that cutting edge sport bike I loved back then. Now it would be an restored antique. It may still be a great bike. But I've been afraid that I might now be disappointed by the old girls performance. And I wouldn't want it to ruin my memories!  :'(

Yamaha XT500  :'(

Paid around $500 in 1978, sold it in 1980 for the same price. Now OTP they're much sought after and now going for upwards of $3000  :o

I like full on sportbikes and have owned a few .
My 03 gsxr 1000 was the best in every way . I just really bonded with that bike.
I put it on the racetrack for a couple of years and boy did it shine.
.I miss that bike and kick myself for thinking there was better out there.
Out of 20+ bikes thoughout the years its the only one I regretted  trading off.

My SV 650 naked "spyderpig"
I never should have sold it to my son.  Still it sits and rots.

1979 BMW R100RS Blue and Silver, best fairing I've ever ridden behind. Very nice bike, very little power but it was a blast to ride and oh so easy to wrench on. I've wished I still had it thousands of times.

1967 CL160....bought it in 1974 ...advance plate weights had rusted and were sticking so it didn't run worth crap.....fixed that and away I went.

1971 Norton Commando Fastback.....guy had put some serious coin into it with alloy wheels and proper parts then needed cash when things went bad for him....bought it, lived with it, loved it....and flipped it to make some money.

This is depressing for a Monday morning.....

Almost all of them.

60's era Suzuki 50 (road version)
60's era Suzuki 90
60's era Honda 180 twin
60's era Honda 250 Dream
Suzuki T500
KZ1000 MKII or IV (can't remember) - probably the sharpest looking bike I've ever had.

Other 'also had's' that I just never really bonded to, even though they were nice bikes:

77 Yammie XS750
80 Honda CB750K
99 Kaw Voyager XII

Still Have:

2000 Kawasaki C10 - the do everything go anywhere work horse
1995 Kawasaki GPZ1100e - great sporting and touring bike for me - just not enough wind protection for touring most parts of the year (live in MI)
1982 Suzuki GS1100E - if I have to explain, you wouldn't understand
1974 Yamaha DT175
1979 Honda XR250

My mint condition 1982 GPz 1100 which I bought new and kept for 23 years.  However, it enabled me to buy my 2006 C10 which I really enjoy.

I can't say that I "shouldn't" have sold any of them, as it seemed like the thing to do at the time.  I still occasionally miss my:

82 CBX
84 Nighthawk S
77 CB400F
79 CB750K
74 CB450
06 SV650

I loved them all, and still have the great (and a few not-so-great) memories.  Probably miss the CBX the most.  That engine had a lovely, soul-stirring sound.

I might get some flaming for this, but I really miss this bike.  My 98 Buell S1 Lightning.  It was the cool blue and orange.  I put a lot of extras on it.  Yeah, I had some issues with it, but that bike had a lot of character and I even made it from DC to Asheville, NC on the BRP.

To answer the original question, I should have never sold my 88 hawkgt - I had gathered up the cbr f3 front end, the VFR back wheel, and had polished the frame and swingarm.  I had a spec II fairing for it as well.  Mike Velasco had agreed to rebuild my engine for 75 hp on premium gas.  But I decided to go another way and sold it cheap.  Dumb, dumb, dumb.

I also wish I hadn't sold my 84 V65 Sabre.  That bike was a hoss.  Hondaline fairing, KZ1000 hard bags.  Basically a concours.  I had well over 100k on it.  The guy I sold it to (as a favor to help him out) blew the engine 2 weeks later and scrapped it.

My '05 Suzuki Bandit. A Swiss Army bike if there ever was one. Plus the '05 is the only year they came out in blue & white gsxr paint scheme, also the last year for the oil/air cooled engine. Oh for the simplicity of that motor. ;) I hope when I finally pull the flies on my connie that it gives me the same low-end torque rush the Bandit had. ;D

1986 VFR750 Honda in red/white/blue. The GOOD one with the sandcast engine covers. Sold it for more than I paid for it 10 years earlier and knew it was a mistake the instant I saw anyone except me on the seat!

My 1998 XR100R.  I worked in dad's shop for a while and sold my fourwheeler to get it.  I was $100 short, so dad threw in a forkbrace for the Connie (The guy was on this forum, went by "Mongo").
It had an FMF Powercore 4 system, bars with no crossbar, no graphics on the tank and a cheap rear tire that led to a couple of high sides...   :D

I wouldn't mind it as a playbike now.  I was actually looking on Craigslist to see how much I could get an XR70-100 for, they're pretty nicely priced.

For me it was my 2003 BMW K1200RS.  After 50,000 glorious miles over 3 wonderful years I dumped it for a Goldwing.  I'm still flabbered I could be that misguided (a nice way of saying 'stupid').  Then I doubled down and replaced the Goldwing with a Ducati, a day rider if there ever was one.

When I decided to undertake a 8,000+ mile cross country trip my tiny 400 lb Ducati would not be the pony of choice for any but the most iron of butts, I needed a stallion, indeed that long gone K1200RS would have been perfect.  So I shopped for an equivalent, but with a better dealer network enroute than offered by BMW, I've always liked BMW's but I'm a realist.  Last January I found a new left-over 2009 Concours 14 that delivers the same riding experience; it's power to weight ratio, ergos, and handling are surprisingly close to that K-12, so I pulled the trigger. In 25 days the kickstand goes up.

Likewise, I never should have sold my air-cooled '73 RD350. I had replaced the ignition coils with automotive coils and ballasts so the plugs would actually continue to fire. Installed alloy rims from donor dirt bikes. A fun bike but low on the driveability/touring scale.

1942 BMW R75 Wehrmachtsgespann with side car.
It was a gift from my uncle;I sold it to a cousin before my move to Canada.....he refuses to sell it back. :'(
This bike was buried under the floor of my uncle's barn till 1979; his dad with the help of some friends (members of The Polish Underground Army) killed many unsuspecting German soldiers (they used to get them drunk first... ;D). They used to take everything(guns, ammo, uniforms, boots, food, etc), including this beautiful, one of a kind R75.

I was young and stupid, plus starting a new life at 18, is never easy. I had to make sure that my mother
wasn't struggling, so I sold everything. I always said someday I was going to get it back(we had a verbal agreement...); things change and apparently so do people..... :-\

I feel for you. I neglected to tell you all the stupid things I did when that age. Lots of "woulda, shoulda's" back then. It's just that I'm not only a motorcycle buff, but also a history buff and WWll artifacts don't come much better than that Beemer. Especially considering the story and family connection behind it. I hope you get it back some day.  Your uncle gave it to you, and you should have it.  Here's one to you getting it back... :chugbeer:

Easy 1974 Norton 850 Commando, first bike, basket case and very frustrating. I remember how proud I was when I got it running and road it around, until parts vibrated off that is.

I also was very fond of my 1980 CB 750F.

This is gonna become sorta a "story" of my first bike and one I would love to still have. In high school there was a kid a year older than myself who had a Triumph Bonneville. This was in the late 60's when The Bonnie was a serious bad ass bike. I would just go out there and sit on it and dream. If I could just get one of these, my life would be complete. The next summer I went to Alaska and lied about my age ( I was 16) and got a job with BLM fighting forest fires in the interior of AK. I returned to Seattle with a pocket full of money and promptly purchased a gorgeous 1966 Triumph Trophy 650. The only problem was, I didn't have a drivers license. (drivers education had just become a requirement for license.) The first day I had the bike I rode it down to Seward Park (Seattle) to show off and got pulled over for going off the pavement and got ticketed for not having a drivers license. Cop had sympathy for me realizing that I was a new owner of such a beautiful machine (he rode too) and allowed me to drive it home after I assured him I would stay off it until I got a license. "Yea, right".  ??? A few hours later darkness had set in over a warm late summer evening. My glistening Triumph sat there beckoning me. Off I went back down to the park to show off some more. "No way that same cop would still be out and about." A different cop pulls me over for acting stupid and gives me another ticket for not having a license. (Ticket #2 same day I bought the bike.) My parents don't even know I own a bike yet. This time the cop isn't so impressed by my story and calls a wrecker to haul it away. While I'm sitting in the squad car sulking guess who pulls up? :-\  Thats right, the same cop who ticketed me earlier. He was not so nice this time. He chews me out real good as I slide lower in the back seat. :-[   A week later, I couldn't resist it and took the bike out for a spin and the same cop passed me going the other way. I took a quick turn off the main drag and shot into a friends yard and jumped off and ran into the back yard with my fingers crossed. A minute later I hear a voice calling my name to get out there. Ticket #3 by the same cop. He made me push my bike home about a mile away. In the next three months I got two more tickets for not having a license by different cops (thank god). It was time to sell my beloved Triumph before I received a life sentence for being a habitual criminal.  I finally go before a judge who has a stack of 5 tickets in front of him. He says no driving until I reach age of 18. (That aint gonna happen, but at least I don't have a motorcycle anymore.)      Wish I still had that bike
