BATTERY DEAD
« on: January 10, 2013, 10:02:44 PM »
Well ain't that the drizzlin shhhhhtuff. I got off from work today, went out to start the bike, and CLICK. Nothing came on, at all. I checked all the fuses and they were good. I borrowed a meter from work and the voltage was 12.2. When I turned the ignition on it went to just over 4 volts.

So, my question is, what are your recommended batteries and where to get them from?

I've only used Yuasa batteries in all my bikes since the early 80's , and their a high quality battery available in all types on contruction and made in the USA, and they supply batteries for many motorcycle manufacturers, and I'm planning on buying one for my C10 here shortly that I'm resurrecting, as well as for my 07 1250 Bandit latter on this year also which still has the original battery in it.

I am thinking of getting the YB18L-A. It is about $63 from an online source. I just don't really have a lot of money to spend on a very nice battery. The other recommended battery from Yuasa is an AGM which is a chunk more expensive.

Just remember that any battery that you order and and have shipped to you will not come with acid, but most auto part stores like Auto Zone sell small containers of acid for filling up motorcycle batteries.

Yeah, I am cool with that. The last battery I ordered for my Nighthawk actually came with the acid.

Well, call me cheap.  The last battery I put in was a Yuasu and it replaced a $35 wal-mart battery which was 5 years old and not dead yet.  I just replaced because I was trying to track down electrical issues and it turned out to be something not related to battery.

I just bought a regular battery for my Kaw atv.  Again, the wal-mart battery was 6 years old before it gave up.  I replaced it with a $46.83 Energizer battery from Sams and the energizer was on the shelf.  Just walked in and bought.  Took home, added the supplied battery acid, topped off the battery again after charging.  I did still have the old battery so I put the remaining acid in it and took it back to Sams for my $15 core refund.

I've run more Wal-mart batterys in the Concours and ATV and 5 years is about the life. I don't recall having to replace one sooner than 4.

When I needed a new one I googled "Advance Auto Coupon" and found a $35 off $85 code, bought the thing online, and had it waiting at my local store 20 minutes later.  The first link is that thread.  The guys gave a lot of good suggestions, and I think I found a good deal.

Edit: looks like they have $40 off $100 right now with code trt41.

I thought I had battery problems, turned out to be the connector from alternator into system was goobered up, black burned and bubbly, not passing electricity.
 Something to check.

That alternator connector is a common problem.  All the charging and system current has to pass thought it and when it gets a little corroded and the resistance builds up it fries.  I had mine go bad, cut it out and did a solid solder connection.  I can't see the reason for a Q/D connector when you might remove/disconnect your alternator maybe twice in the life of the bike.

I haven't followed up on this. Shame on me. The bike runs great since the new battery. I was sure it was the battery when I tried to start it and heard it go click. It sounded like fuse actually but all the fuses were good. Once I got a meter from work I checked it sitting there and it was just over 12 volts. It seemed a little low, but when I turned on the ignition the voltage dropped down to 4 volts so I knew it was the battery.
