Title: What'd you do for your Connie today?
Post by: norcalbarney on May 11, 2011, 01:00:54 PM
Um... First Post, noobs!!!

I pulled the cams from my parts bike to send to SiSF for the Torque regrind.  I also pulled my spare carb bowls for SiSF's overflow tube treatment.  Then I did the "original-original" two minute mod by stuffing an old dish sponge in the right side of the air intakes on the airbox, covering 2/3 of the right side.

The bike is less "bucky" and smoother on decelleration/roll-offs.  I'm also getting the 2MM rejetting kit from SiSF, so I should have a "forum-compliant" C-10 pretty soon.

Ahhh!  This is the C-14 forum!  Ahhh! :o

Flashed the Trim values from the Auto-Tune on the pesky fuel-injection system after my last 800 mile plus ride.  ;)
Sure beats pulling carbs.I do still have a ZED to tinker with though.  8)

I've been having a problem finding good premium gas, I'm thinking with the price of gas most people are steering away from the pricey high test and it's sitting in the storage tanks and going bad.

Nothing, except still fixing the weird crap the PO did. So far? Removed the ONE peg lowerer that was installed, fixed the "fairing rattle" that was actually just two missing screws, and tomorrow I'm taking a stupid throttle lock off. I hate throttle locks.

Hopped on The Beast to ride to work, but the bars wouldn't turn.  Noticed the front brake level was bent, then I noticed the gas and oil on the ground, and the pavement on the peg.  Someone dropped my bike, and the steering lock is half-locked.  Bars only turn half way, so I can only turn left...

But it was Bike to Work day, and it's a beautiful day in SF, so I rode my bicycle.

Wondering about swapping top-triple trees vs. just swapping the ignition.  I've got a nice parts bike...   Cheers!

To those asking about my soon to be green Connie, I'm doing the work myself (i'm pretty well qualified to do it).  My dad passed away on April 29th from ALS.  This was his bike and I think it would be fitting to restore it back to it's glory days or better.  He bought it in '91.  I'll start a new thread soon if you care to follow it.  Yes, I've taken a few pictures along the way so far.

Said good morning to my 06 and gave it a  :-* on the tank this morning before I walked to work (only 20 yards away)  ;)

Will do the same tonight before I go to bed. Wife says the bike gets more affection than her but then again, the bike only needs infrequent servicing  :-X

I really must get out more and/or get a life outside the Connie kingdom  ;D

Rode to the 4th Annaul Jeep go topless day here in NH.   Most of the Jeep owners wimped out and had their tops on due to the threat of rain.  Had the distinct of being the only bike there, but did not try to take her on the trails they were doing on the jeeps.  The field that was the parking lot was enough of an off road experience for me.   I officially have my first 1000 miles on the bike since buying her 2 weeks ago.   I still grin under the helmet when I ride.

Mine's getting half that treatment...  It's raining!

What did I do? I rode the snot out of her going to work. Scared a few children and small animals along the way. ;D The power this thing makes after SISF's  cam gear and 2 min. mod jet kit along with the baffle-ectomy is addicting. Its like it MAKES my right wrist "snap". When I told a friend of mine that it would now pull the front wheel just by snapping the throttle he was a little skeptical..... so I proved it to him..... twice..... ;D. Thanks again Steve for a great combination/bang for the buck.

 Rode her to work for the first time since October 2010 !!!!
Since being parked over hydrolock concerns, which turned out to be false, the bike has had the carbs 'SISF'-treated for overflow tubes, jets, and 2-minute kit.  Fairing gouges filled in with 'icing', sanded, painted, and clearcoated. Exhaust valves just replaced.  Fairing repaired again after trial ride home discovered cracks in fairing.

Yesterday was spent in Madison, WI, watching last daughter graduate from UW-Mad-town.  Yay, Anna!

Stayed up last night/this morning to get fairing repaired/repainted/reassembled.  Got the fairing on by myself at Midnight.  Finished with plastics, hoses, gas tank, farkles, dropped fairing nuts, windshield and all, by 330CST.

Two hours of sleep.  Get up and ride to work, 40 sunny, breezy miles at 40 degrees F.  'Speed and Strength' layered gear kept me warm, plus the Connie's built-in heater.  :)

Still Grinnin', We're Winnin' !!!

The saturday before the site crashed. I changed the forks from my 1988s to 2004, 1998 brakes, fender and rotors, new pads. Changed the wheel to a 1991 ZR6D 17" Put on a michelin PR3 120/70 17". Installed a SOOFK Changed the oil. Changed Plugs. Set valve clearence six were tight .003. Relocated the overflow tank. Installed a fuse block on the right side of the battery box. While tightening the axle I broke the speedometer drive gear. I checked to make sure the notch was lined up but it must have moved and the stress split it in two.Today the new one came from Ron Ayers, I put the front end together. Changed the fluid in the brakes and clutch mastercylinders and bled them, the clutch was the worst. If the rain stops I'll take it out tommorow.

Arrived home Saturday morning after night shift and crashed. In the afternoon over my 'morning coffee', decided to change the oil, so I pulled the lowers, warmed her
up and pulled the drain plugs, then the filter. Rifled through the garage until I found my last stashed filter from a deal a few years back, and replaced it. But, I realized
that I must have thrown out the washer between the spring and filter during the last change, so I searched for the washer size in the Clymers, no good. I posted a
request on this site, and T Cro supplied me with the info I needed, so off to the store I went. After the ride back, I sat on the ground piecing the filter assy together,
and I realized that I bought Bergman's Spoofak 1.5 yrs ago, and was waiting to run out of filters to install it. I looked at the filter in my hand and said "Nah", that's it.
Spoofak is now installed with a NAPA shortie plus a new KN air filter, and all is well in the kingdom. Next oil change will be much simpler!!

Complete role reversal in my household.  I tease my wife because I can leave a mail package on the table for hours while she salivates over opening anything ASAP.  :)

On a Riding Note:  I drove to work for the second day in a row!  Insert grin here.  AND the big deal is that I teach class tonight until 9 so I have my first Ride in the Dark homeward.  Will be a cool ride home at 40F.

Rode to work and back just like the day before, and the day before, and the day before etc.,etc.. Have a 42 mi. round trip commute. Luckily most of it is on country back roads away from traffic. Good place to let her rip. Got to ride someplace other than work for a change though. Got 104K mi. on my 95 Connie and I'll bet 90 % of it is to work and back. Ready to head for the hills.

New rear tire. Rear brake pads and flushed rear brakes with the phoenix RFI bleeder. Replaced fork oil with 12.5w oil and installed new bolts and caps on bar risers, installed new bolts on grab rails  (old ones very rusty),
Monday will do the front brakes, change oil, and flush and replace clutch fluid.  Thanks to Murphs for quick delivery of parts.

Took the week off; adjusted the shock rebound for my weight, added a little air to the shock, and went for a 320 mile ride to & in the GA/TN/NC mtns and rode the Cherohala Skyway for  the first time. nIt was a VERY nice day! Connie did well: 320 miles on 7 gallons = 45 mpg. Not only is Red fast, apparently it is frugal. Now...what to do tomorrow?....

No...I was cleaning my bike today...getting ready for the ride to Miller for WSB this weekend...and I noticed a flat spot on the LH side (sitting on the bike)...funny, I thought...I hadn't seen that before...no impact marks on the new tire...must have been there when I got the bike (5k miles ago!)...but, I got to looking at the other side of the wheel, and noticed what looks like hairline cracks opposite the flat spot...they are near where the polished area on the rim meets the rough-cast center section of the wheel...inside of the bead-seating area...hidden in an area where there is some corrosion...I just had a new tire and wheel bearings installed too...not blaming the tire guy for not catching it...I figure he saw the flat spot, but, as long as the tire seated, didn't think twice about it...

I had just taken a shake-down ride too...checking everything out...thinking "Man!  This Connie is nice!  She doesn't wobble when I take my hands off the (newly installed Storz) bars...she doesn't weave around in corners...she doesn't vibrate at all!  This bike is pretty well sorted out...I'm proud of the way she acts!"...go figure...

Thanks for the ebay link...I already got it taken care of...I just sold an '87 parts bike to a guy with a 2001 Connie...he mainly wanted the tank, engine, and bags...and it hadn't been picked-up from my garage yet...so, I emailed him and bought back the wheel he had no need for...seems as though something might be going my way in this whole scenario...

Thanks for asking...and ride safe!

Brad

On Sunday, besides putting Murph's tip-over bars (front) back on, I 'tagged' my bike with a good-lookin' owner's plate from COG NW 'nice guy' Charlie Gary.  He offers these nameplates and puts some money back into COG's coffers while doing so.

Installed KB fork brace from Murph a few days ago.  Ties the front end up nicely.  Seems much more responsive to steering input now.  A few more miles with it will be the tell tale.  Waiting for shift linkage from t-cro to come in mail.  I smell a weekend project!

That was either my first or second mod, Gene. The only other major improvement for the front end was the removal and burning of the stock Dunflop.
My next mod will be tackling the front suspension, ie; springs, emulators, shock oil..

Yup, waiting for the tires on there to wear down some more.  It has the Dunlop in front and I forget in back.  Going with Avons later this year or next spring.  Earlier this year I replaced the springs with Sonic 1.0's from Murph and a combo 10 and 15w fork oil.  Nose dives are greatly reduced.   :chugbeer:

Changed front brake pads and fluid, only took an hour spread over 24 hours to get all the bubbles out. The old pads still had decent amount of pad left but I think they were sintered and I like the organic as I would rather change pads than rotors. Changed oil, using havoline 20 - 50W for Texas summers. Washed all the tupperware - noticed a crack in sub-fairing that supports lower farings and bottom fairing. I think RTV should fix it once its dry. Still waiting on new left rider peg and mounting braket - slow motion drop in garage finally finished these off after previous drop cracked them. I am saving up for tip over bars.

Next up - change out rear shock fluid, grease rear suspension and flush coolant and try that Wetter product.

Installed GRIP PUPPYS over the 08 C14 OEM grips.

(letting the soapy water dry before I use them)

Seemed a little too easy to install, so worried about them coming loose ..... Cleaned the OEM grips with soapy hot water and found a lot of oil and junk on the oem grips ... wonder if I should have cleaned them with more than soapy water ....

Painted the valve cover a nice fresh coat of black and reinstalled on Dad's bike.  Added Snarf's block-off plates.  Tightened some of the oil lines (banjo bolts) on the engine.  A few had worked a little loose and were weeping oil.  Maybe I should lock-tite them?  Tonight will be T-Cro's coils.  Then it will be off to redo the rear end, seals, fender bob, and all.

Replaced one of the little o-rings on the left carb of my bike under the vacuum cut-off cover.  It split and was a vacuum leak.  No change in performance, just don't hear it now.  Actually, I replaced it by cutting a sliver length of very small vacuum hose.

Where can I get Snarf's block off plates? These are for the valve cover, right? It sure would make doing valve jobs easier if I didn't have all that dang secondary air stuff to deal with!

My fingers hurt from working on her last night.  Plus, it was 91 degrees in the garage because it hit 102 here yesterday.  Went far enough in to pull the radiator, oil cooler, and oil lines.  Then did the front coolant log o-rings, then all the short coolant hoses.  Painted the lower fairing frame and the radiator screens.  They'll be going back on next along with the top radiator hoses and T-Cro's wire harness.  Then maybe finally start working on the rear - after I relocate the coolant overflow container.  I saw Man-of-Blues pix on Cogzilla - must do that.  Hopefully it will let some more air flow thru the bottom.

Now I'm looking for two replacement oil cooler lines. mine are caracking at the crimp.  Pete, you out there?

IIRC a few people were using the coolant container from Ninja 250's.  It will fit behind or beneath the battery box.

I've seen that.  However, Man-of-Blues method just uses existing pieces (including the hoses).  The ultimate in frugal.  It fits between the fender and battery box, just below the igniter, using some "industrial strength" Velcro to keep it from shifting.  Somewhere on his photobucket pix, you can see it.

Valve adjustment, replaced the fan switch and t-stat, drain and fill coolant, installed a used centerstand, (the original finally broke) and went on a 200 mile ride to test the repairs.

Update....... a few days ago I pulled her out of the garage, pulled the lower panels off to check for leaks/loose bolts/ etc. and then gave her a much needed bath and shine. Then for the next three days I road her to the NASCAR track in Fort Worth and back (little over an hour one way). Love the hywy pegs and cruise control.

Actually - yesterday.  Put on 230 miles - Tulsa to OKc in the cool of the morning and back to Tulsa in the evening.  Managed to miss almost all of the rain on the return trip.  10 minutes after pulling into the garage all hell broke loose - couldn't see the house across the street thru the rain.  Now have definite list of next mods: 1) Snarf's Highway pegs  2) Murphs "Knee Saver's"  3) Bar risers.   My knees need a little more space to be comfortable with more miles between stops.  Also noticed that when I relaxed at cruising speed my elbows were almost resting on my legs.  Bars up a little and pegs down a little and I'll be good for a lot more miles.

On the return trip I pushed a ways past the posted 75mph speed limit to stay ahead of the storm.  Some stretches of a few miles in a row at 95 (where "both" lanes were clear) only less than 85 when traffic required it.  My old cruiser did NOT inspire confidence at 85+ - the "tombstone" fork mounted windscreen induced unwanted steering input...   None of that with the Connie!  Did notice that where the asphalt was older there was occasionally a little light wobble when running in the part of the road compressed by years of traffic - sort of like my old bike had on grooved concrete.

I installed a CeeBaily Euro Tour screen. I have to say that I am quite impressed. The screen is not that much bigger but the difference is huge. Far less wind coming in and what is getting around the screen is much calmer and smoother.

My wife said that with the stock screen it felt like her helmet was being sucked off her head -- there was that much of a low pressure area in the back. She says it is totally different with the CB. We were riding that other day and it was a bit warm and I left the screen down. When we stopped and I mentioned how nice it was to be able to keep the screen down on hot days, she was not even aware that it was all the way down.

Great product.

Hey tonedeaf: per chance do you have a link to where you purchased this screen? I was thinking of swapping shields, and this sounds interesting.

Didn't really do much for the Lady today, except what she wanted me to do...took her to the office, and on the way there, opened her up a little more than usual.

Man that felt good.

Cee Baily seems to have this shield thing nailed down. Put one on my C-10, it works much gooder than the Clearview and crazy gooder than the stock. Nice to see folks build a d*mn fine product. Enjoy yours.

Drained, flushed and refilled the clutch cylinder. The fluid that came out was a nasty color, and at only 19000 miles. The difference in shifting was very noticeable.

I know that to most of you guys, this is a very simple procedure, but to a novice like me, it's a little intimidating. All the while thinking, 'will it ever run again? Am I going to have a catastrophic failure on the way to work? Will I DIE!

Every thing worked out well, time to tackle the brakes next.  :o

Flushed x 3 and changed my 2008 Connie's radiator coolant with Honda pre mix coolant.

(I believe it the first coolant change for her as .. a lot of small white debris came out)

Found loose exhaust header nuts.  >:(   one was finger tight - 2 more were just loose - the other 5 were tight)

Enjoyed learning how to pull the plastic off to get to the radiator / recovery tank.  :'(

Thankful for 1/4" drive and T handle.

Very thankful I reviewed Fred's DVDs before doing the deed ....

Took me almost 3 hours in the hot sun ... man I hate laying - working - siting on concrete  (a lift would have been nice)

Downed utility pole closes I-94 near College Ave. for (about 5) hours
(http://media.jsonline.com/images/mjs-highway_1.jpg)

By Sharif Durhams and Breann Schossow of the Journal Sentinel

July 5, 2011

I-94 near W. College Ave. was closed for about five hours Tuesday after a downed utility pole sent wires across the freeway, according to the Milwaukee County sheriff's office.

Deputies closed the freeway in both directions from about 1:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Barry McNulty, a We Energies spokesman, said a dump truck clipped a cable television line in the area, bringing down a utility pole. It also brought down electrical wires attached to the pole.

About 1,000 We Energies customers lost electrical power because of the accident, but service was restored for most of the customers by the time the freeway was reopened, McNulty said.

Repairs were delayed because the work crews had trouble getting through the traffic congestion created by the accident, McNulty said.

To keep the service interruption for the remaining customers affected to a minimum, technicians chose to replace the pole rather than to cut and restring new wires, McNulty said.

Crews also had to inspect the area to make sure no other poles or equipment were damaged, he said.

Northbound I-94 traffic was redirected off the interstate at College Ave. while the freeway segment was closed. Southbound traffic was diverted to westbound I-894.

So can you guess who was inside the Northbound traffic at 5pm needed going just two miles further?  Me!  Idling ATGATT in 95 degree weather burned a bunch of fuel.  I mean I had a mesh jacket on but still.  Was running on fumes because I thought I'd be off in plenty of time to get gas near home.

I do not envy Texas summer commuters who do heat for a living...

PS.  AND, there was a pickup truck on fire in the morning that I passed on I-94 during my morning commute.  Had to sweep away from the right lane quickly as traffic slowed to watch.  Darn gapers' block![

So what I did for my Connie was fill up her tank and take her to the Milwaukee Brewers' baseball game that night.  Motorcycle parking down in front is really nice./font]

Maybe if we are lucky it will be the last recall. One thing I noticed is the service manual does not show the stone guards and, if you try to adjust the rear brake pedal height after the stone guard recall, it became much more a pain than before .... Replaced the rear right side axle seal, spacer, washer and axle nut. Some scoring on washer and some uneven wear on the spacer that runs inside the seal. (Very small grease leak but I replaced it anyways as the scoring on the washer seemed to cause the rear axle nut torque valves to be all over the place)

You can see the scoring and uneven wear on the rear spacer.

Also installed a techmount universal plate and ram mount with a Garvin 255W (Old Car GPS).

Now need to go for a ride.

I do not have that washer  part (2nd one over from the left)  on my bike.
92049 is the seal (last on the right) which I have but where did you get the new washer from and in what order/position does it go?
Could you tell me the part number please from the link below?
Grease leak?  Are you putting grease in there somewhere?  The only grease I know of that would come out  there would be from a failed seal on the sealed bearing. Maybe you should replace the bearing(s).

2008 C14. I bought the bike used and there was dirt and grease on the spacer / oil seal interface. After I first took it apart to clean and inspect I noticed the rear axle washer was scored and the spacer was worn uneven and had corrosion on it (see photo). (note: previous owner lived near the Pacific Ocean). Bearing looks okay, spins smooth but tight, but I may replace them in the future.

On Saturday, 7/16, I rode over to a COG Wrench session at Larry's house.  Larry is a generous host!  He helped bleed my front and rear brakes, adjust clutch fluid level, and change the rear gear oil.  We also stripped out obsolete wires from the previous owner's CD/CB player I removed earlier.

I was able to help Cary perform the Fuel Gauge resistor project on his 2005 C-10.  I brought my extra resistors along to share.  He was the only other C-10 present.

I took a few pictures of the work but not enough of the friendly attendees: Steve and Donna with son, Ian; Bob, Cary, and Larry, our host (with Sue).

Added front tip-over bars with highway pegs and KB handlebar risers from Murphs today.  Also have the fender extender to install later on this evening.  The tip-over bars are probably the most aggravating thing that I have installed on the bike to date.  I dread having to take those things off when it comes time to remove the plastics next time!  Maybe there is an easier way but I just don't have much clearance to bolt/unbolt the bars from the brackets.  I'm not sure if I'll be happy with the looks of the bike with the tip-overs and the risers but I wanted the highway pegs just to be able to stretch out and the risers to take a little strain off of my back and neck.  I figured the tip-over bars will come in handy next time I decide to drop it anyway....lol.

Now, If I can only talk myself into that 7th gear mod.  This latest order from Murph would have almost covered the 7th gear!   :(

Get a 5/8 ring and open ender and bend the ends. Makes taking on and off Murphs tip over bars heaps easier.

Today....  I removed an old alarm system and fixed the hack-job on the wiring system

And I serviced the back end (swingarm bearings, drive shaft, lots of grease usage).  Don't think it'd been touched since rolling off the factory floor in 1998, 27,000 miles ago.  Kinda the feeling I'm getting about Everything on this bike.

Drained, flushed and filled the rear brakes. Now the fronts, rears and clutch are done time to move on to the coolant and oil change. It's a little tough when you don't have a garage.  :(

I  have a manual switch to turn on the fan so anytime I am in traffic , going slow through a small town or sitting at a stop light I have the fan running.
I really like it. I can keep the temp needle below  half way.

Got my carb parts from Murphs, so I finished rebuilding the carbs, installed them and a new K&N and....

took the bike out for the first ride (was non-op when I bought it last week).   ;D

Then I noticed that I'd forgotten to tighten a coolant hose clamp, so I cut the test ride short and went back to the shop to tighten that, sync the carbs and put the bike together.

Re-assembled all the footpeg brackets that were painted (black).  Put painted disk back on black painted rear wheel.  Painted new/used speedo drive (at the axle) black.  Pulled the rear shock and all the linkage.  Drained shock.  Left big pile of greasy black crumbs on the floor to clean-up tonight.  Probably pull the front upper fairing frame off tonight.  Maybe put the replacement one on (thanks Zak!).

May do the same on the way home.

At the weekend I cleaned the brake calipers and took her for her annual inspection which she passed with zero faults.
Had to fit the original Scud-Launcher for that and GOD IT'S QUIET.
I couldn't hear the engine with my earplugs in.

Was a relief to refit the 2 Bros muffler.  ;D

I didn't get wet, but last night I did run quite a few miles on wet roads. so today, I yanked the cans and did a Neverdull polish job. I use my battery powered drill and a rubber pad that i use to hold down the Neverdull material.
Talk about getting into the chrome, deep polish in, soft cloth rub off, beautiful. 10 yrs old, and they look brand new, no rust at all, and as shiny as they can get.
Considering the cans are the only chrome on the bike, making them look good is important.Everyone ride safe out there.

Took the bike out for the first real ride.  I'm clearly used to smaller bikes because on 55mph highways, I was cruising in 4th gear.  Bike peed oil all over my left foot (and the bike in general.  Stupid inside corner of the valve cover gasket is bubbling/spitting...  hoping it's just not seated, and not cracked/torn/pinced (I'll look tomorrow).

Also did 90% of the work on making a new shorty windscreen, will finish tomorrow.  It's "resting" on the bike after baking in a hope that it moulds itself a little.

I installed a nearly new 110 80/17 Macadam on the front and it feels weird. Came with the bike and the one on it was showing dry rot "cracks" in it.. Maybe it the small difference in size.......
I also changed my speedo cable that's been missing for the last month or so. I was ballparking the speeds based on memory vs the tach. I've been a BAD BAD boy. ;D

Lastly I received my Frog Togg rain suit in Hi-Vis. Very sexy, the product feels strange hope it works!

I'm packing up for a 3 day drive to............... NO FRIGGIN IDEA! My outlaws are having a family reunion here and I don't fit in too well. Yes I play well with others, just not these "others"

I was thinking of hitting Mount Washington and then Old Orchard for a few "insert beverage here" on the pier. The weather for Sunday looks like poo so I'll play it buy ear.  If I had been more prepared I would have done a 1000/24 but I'm not ready.

BrianM I was gonna feel sorry for the oil leak but then I saw the Chevelle in the pic and there is no pity on ya now!   But really, did you get that gasket fixed??

Oh..I just did an oil/filter exchange and installed a Admore LED bar on rear.  Pretty cool running, brake and even a amber turn signal that flashes progressively like the old T-birds and Cougars and the new Mustangs.
Title: Re: What'd you do for your Connie today?

There are only 4 60's era Chevelle's in/around that shop.  2 belong to my father-in-law, and 1 each for his 2 sons.  I think only one is a runner anymore.  There's a 68 or 69 Camaro too, and a handful of other cars that I have no idea what they are.  Those things with 4 wheels are only utility to me, I own a truck for hauling things and a diesel Jetta for getting somewhere as economically as possible.

Anyway, yes I did get the valve cover gasket replaced.  Box from Murphs showed up at 11am on Monday and I had the bike all stripped and ready so it was on and the bike running (without leaks this time) in about an hour.  Been MUCH too hot for a ride lately, though my wife and I are doing our first 2-up tomorrow morning on a breakfast run.

Just finished a 4-day riding/camping trip through TX, NM and the southwestern section of Colorado.  Stopped at Telluride for a brew at a nice pub then ran into several storms going into Durango.  Camped near Gunnison at Blue Mesa and spent a night near Walsenburg.  Did 2100 miles total and 854 on the marathon last day ride from Durango CO into the 100+ degree heat in North Texas.  Pulled into my drive at 12:33am and the thermometer said 100 degrees F.  My 2001 ran flawlessly all week and was a joy in the twisties, even with a severly worn front Dunlop.  I had just fitted a Pirelli MT66 to the back and was pleasantly surprised at the nice, neutral feel it gave the bike.  I've ordered a Pirelli 110/80/18 for the front to try out the set together.  Our summer really sucks this year down here and I can't wait to hit the 80's and 90's again for a mid-day high.  I bought the bike 5 weeks ago and have put 4K on it already.  I've owned 3 Conks and this is the nicest one yet.

First off the Frogg Toggs are AWESOME! They work so well, as soon as I put them on the RAIN STOPPED!!!! So in fact I have no idea if the are really awesome they are at all...... ::)
I hit Mount Washington despite the weather outlook. The summit was fuzzy at best but just a little lower down was spectacular as usual, Followed the directions on my crazy a$$ GPS and found some sweet roads purely by accidents. I hadn't received my Ram mount and had fun trying to see my GPS in the map pocket of my tank bag. Never again! I had everything with me but the kitchen sink and a CAMERA, so no pictures  :( .
I visited some friends camping at Little River State Park in VT on the way home. Great camp site for those of you who like this off the beaten path. Best part about it there are NO BUGS! the sites are cool and the whole place is really nice! http://www.vtstateparks.com/htm/littleriver.htm (http://www.vtstateparks.com/htm/littleriver.htm)
I motored home at warp speed and the temperature was simply beautiful for a night ride.
One interesting thing happened at the border (I know some of you have a border fetish 8) !) I pulled up after the car in front left and was already helmet less and passport in hand. The border guy ask where I'm headed so I tell him Mount Washington. He asked what I do and I told him. Since 9/11 2 border guy are always present when a vehicles arrives. The older guard to my left blurts out "don't you have any places to visit in Canadaaaa?" to which I reply "yes but I've seen them all and I've actually seen more of the USA then most Americans will ever see!". As I blurted this out by the end of my sentence I was wondering what I had just started.... To my surprise the old guy replied "your probably right, have a good ride"
So that folks was my 550 mile Saturday ride!

Oh here a vid of Travis Pastrana doing his thing on the mountain! SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!

removed the "funny for a few times" KMW decals ::) the po slapped on along with the "Concours" reflective tape stickers he slapped on the sides of the bags. waxed the fairing and armor all'd the bags and it's like a new bike. the decals were good for a laugh more than a few times, but the shiny cosmic blue paint and all black bags give the bike a nice clean look.

I have a new Murph's dual headlight to install; an Avon storm ultra for the front and a michelin pr3 for the back; change the fork oil and install a set of gators; wheel bearings all around; better horns; and a general cleaning. I rode the hell out of my Conc today.  And yesterday.  And the day before.    ;D

I did replace my driving light switch yesterday.  The knob had vibrated off somewhere in VT when I went up to the National for the Meet & Greet.  I figure it has washed out into the Atlantic Ocean by now.

I was going to do an oil change, but after getting off the bike after 220+ miles today, I decided I didn't want to go out and wrench on it.  I'll probably get it done tomorrow.

every time I read the Avon headshake claim I ask myself what one expects when they install a different sized tire on the oem rim than what Kawasaki installed and recommends for the rim, and expect it to be rock solid. it's a skinnier, taller tire so it's naturally gonna be more squirrely.

Sorry to burst your bubble here but you are wrong in thinking that the "skinny" tire is the culprit with Avons and headshake as the Concours will headshake with any brand of tire......

The Dunlop K series 120/70-18 as used on the Concours was special made to fit the 3.0" rim and in fact only measures out at under 111.0 mm whereas when a 110/80 is mounted on the 3.0" rim it is in fact is just as wide if not a tad wider than the special made 120 is.

To which it is at best only 3 to 7 mm taller than the stocker and as those who have run other than stock sized tires on the Concours a taller front tire can be even more stable than a shorter one.

Given the info at hand when researched one will find that the 110/80 is a better choice than the 120/70 is simply due to rim width; you will not find a single tire maker that list the 3.0" as the prefered rim width other than Dunlop for the K series tire only.

Got her all put back together (plastic, that is) after finding my oil leak and fixing it...Thanks to all those who have shared their knowledge on this forum!   Then went on a nice 120 mile ride in the mountains...on my way back down the mountain I was thinking about how much I love riding this bike when I was jolted back to reality...oncoming traffic flashing headlights...emergency traffic control by a guy in a reflective vest...orange cones restricting my lane...and, around the corner...the slew of emergency vehicles and EMTs working on the CBR rider...looks like he was coming up the canyon and low-sided in a 25mph right-hand corner...slid across the oncoming lane...and hit the armco pretty hard...I have to say...it didn't look good.

Anyway, I got back home just before dark...safe and sound.

My prayers go out to that young man, and his family...

Got rid of the crappy roadsmart on the front of my bike and shoehorned on the PR3.  I currently have a pr3 front and pr2 rear.  I needed a rear really really bad mid-trip and the local shop had the pr2 in stock.  These tires are amazazing.  With the luggage off and the suspension set on angry, this bike is about the best handling bike I've ever sat on.  I nudge the handlebars and it falls to just the right lean in the corner, and if I need a little more she just does it instinctively, and never tries to fall over, just steers around the pothole/slow car.

for tbunder, the 110/80 avon roadrider I was running on the stock front end measured 116mm.  Those numbers on the side are just a size like shoes - some run big, some run small.

Did some routine maintenance, then went on a 365 km ride, through small back roads, tree lined secondary roads, fast 4 lane highways, and back to the residence!  The best things to do to my 'Connie!!!!

i highsided her.  oily road put on the brake, rear end came around...you know the rest.  it was all low speed. bikes banged up good on the right, i just got a skinned knee and ego. didnt even realize the brake was in a lock in that oil, i actually thought the back brake didnt work at all and eased on the front and thats when the back end came around low then caught and flipped. i just got her lined out, looks like i got some more work ahead of me.

Actually it was 2 days ago.

I changed my front bulb for a brighter one from Silverstar, changed the oil from dino Rotella to synthetic T6, cleaned my K&N air filter and reoiled it, installed some grip heaters with a relay
(thanks for the info DarkKnight) and new 713 grips from Progrip and finally after washing it I gave it a shine with Plexus plastic polish.
Red (my Connie) still looks great for a 20 year old bike.

Then I rode the heck out of it just for fun.  :D

Sorted a small coolant leak today. When I replaced the water pump last October, I guess I should have tightened the clamp down one more click on the hose going into the hard pipe. Had a few small drops that would smoke at start up the past few months. Tightened it and did a shakedown ride, all is well.

Gotta say, it took me 36,000 miles to get this bike to where I finally wanted it, and now I can't believe how good it truly is. All that's left is to decide on which windshield to upgrade to. Rifle, Arizona, cut-down stock, and so on...not sure yet!

It so much easier naked!

In the past week I adjusted the valves, synced the carbs, replaced the fork oil and cut 5 inches off the stock springs. It's 38 degrees out but I couldn't stand it. I took her for a short spin. It's like a new bike, runs and handles awesome. Oil change tomorrow.

Got the E128 GIVI mounting kit on the bike last week.  Used the nice weather(40 F) today to see how well the 46L trunk fits on it.  Might put some invisible reflective tape on the bottom of the trunk.  You can see the tape shining off the sidebags when the flash hits it.

Pulled the carbs this week and sent them to SISF for some "Tweeking". Finished cutting and welding up the new 4 into 1 exhaust system. As soon as the carbs and pipe are back on it will be change the fork oil time. After that greasing the rear drive splines and maybe a manual cam chain tensioner install. When thats done its riding time !!!

I had a busy weekend as well. I adjusted the valves changed the spark plugs.I got my wheels back from the powder coaters and replaced the bearings. Installed new tires and brakes.I changed all fluids except fork oil. Relocated the coolant over flow.I removed all plastic and sanded it down and primered it with epoxy. Thank goodness it was a three day weekend. Next weekend I'll paint let it cure for a week and then hopefully get everything back together the week after that. Now I just have to decide on which windshield I want and go ahead and order it.

I, along with the back up of my generous host, SiSF, replaced the water pump today. We kinda figured with 161k miles on it, it was time. Yanked it out, old one looked perfect. 161k miles. Wow.

Went ahead and installed new one, purchased from Murphs, for the peace of mind.

Also replaces all coolant hoses as they were about 5-6 years old.

To Steve in Sunny Florida, SALUTE! Thanx again for the use of the lift and having my back when required.

Wrapped it up about 2:30-3, SiSF, 2Fast(runner up OTP), in town for a personal matter, and myself then went up to

They're some really cheap PIAA's that I picked up on eBay a few years ago when eBay was relevant. I put them on the Blue Monster when I bought it but I used the instrument panel wire to power the relay and the relay drew so much current that the panel was very dim.  I pulled that wiring and ran power directly from the battery through the accessory leads and a toggle switch but I've forgotten to turn them off every once in a while.  Now I've got relay energized with the blue wire from the junction box.

Interesting conundrum....  C14 stuff in a C10 thread.....  Hmmmmm what to do....  Well, it is a Connie and he did something to it...  Oh well.

I thrashed mine a bit on the way to southern VA and back.  Other than that...nothing.  Not much to do actually.  Just ride the heck out of it now.

Got the Connie in for the coolant log O'rings. Then went out for a ride. Temps in the 50's here today in central Oregon. Got her up to an Indicated 125 @9K in 5th gear. beat my buddies SV650 in a rolling 1st to 100 pretty easy. He's pissed. So I just ordered a 75mm kit for my old KZ 1000 as well. Making his day!

The 50k mile spa continues....

Greased the suspension.  Lubed the throttle and speedometer cables.  Discovered broken motor mount bolt and started a list for ronayers.com.  Cleaned the air filter and left it to dry. Drained the carbs.  Changed the gear oil.  Drained the coolant.  Checked the rear pads...  with the holy day tomorrow I won't get back to it until Monday.

Adjusted the valve clearance.  Refilled the cooling system.  Shined the Cans.  Returned the auxiliary power outlet and replaced the feeler gauge I bent the last time that I adjusted the valves.  Re-glued the fog light lens that fell off in my hands the other day.  Removed and replaced the spark plugs.  Drained the oil and purchased new filter.  Received from Murph the new wheel bearings and seals and removed old ones from wheel destroying one of the c-clips in the process. Ordered engine mounting bolt, nut, fuel tank bumper and c-clip from Ron Ayers.  Started it's sponge bath from the rear end and got about halfway through before I went to work on the cans.

Replaced the speedo drive gear on my '92.  It died at approx 45k.  It lasted 10k longer then the one on my '89 ZX10 lasted.  Seems like a consistent issue with K's from that era.....
But - it gave me an excuse to pull the wheel and give it a good cleaning.

Just riding whenever I can lately. Have Murphs front fender extender and the spin-on oil filter conversion parts sitting/waiting to be done. New-used seat in route too. Have covered southeast Mass pretty good since February  ;D. The 19" Rifle shield gets the airflow over me better w/out the turbulance of the stock shield  :chugbeer: Reviewing this thread reminds me I should be doing more maintainance checks. BTW, is there anything that can be done with the oil check window? I can't see squat.

Now it feels like I'm riding a motorcycle again.

An added benefit is the gauges and fairing doesn't flop around like a pair of 60yo DDs anymore.  I don't think the Cee Bailey's shield is ever going to go back on.

Last night after work.  Pulled carbs (and tank, side panels, inner fairing panels, air box and filter, coils and wires) off my bike.  Cleaned my other set of carbs (from dad's bike) and set pesky float levels in about 4 hours - they were bad!  Lots of carb cleaner, fish line and air hose.  Did the bench set for sync (thank's Rich for the instructions I found).  They look great now, I just hope they run great.  The carbs still had their plugs in them at 58k miles.  There must be some rust in the tank, see pictures below of super-fine silt.  Probably why he said it ran a little rough when warming up.  Hooked up new cables to the carbs.  They'll go back in mine tonight.  I also nipped the ends of the plug wires and screwed them all back together.  I'm stopping to get new grips on the way home tonight so maybe I can ride by tomorrow morning.  I think the rubber of the OEM grips keeps reacting to the glue (2 different ones) because they get gooey and slip on the bar after a few months.  Snarf's block-off plates going in too.  Oops, have to clean the K&N filter too - 15 more minutes of time.

SISF - You must have a jig or jigs to hold these as you work.  If I had to do this set after set, like I think you do, at a "regular" work bench, I'd go crazy (or make a jig).

Edit:  Dad's carbs will be getting the "power" jet kit form SISF (already sitting on the workbench) and overflow tubes along with new needles, o-rings, etc.  Mine's just the daily driver, his bike is getting all of the fun stuff.  It's even got T=Cro coils in it already.  If I can just ever finish it.......

Are you just swapping carbs or do they feed into something bigger?

There feeding a set of SISF's Power Cams, Steve recommended going to them as I was looking for more top end.

Cleaned up all the luggage. Last time I did that was last year, amazing how dirty they get in 10k miles of riding!

Packing her up tonight for the National, see you all there on Sunday!

SISF - You must have a jig or jigs to hold these as you work.  If I had to do this set after set, like I think you do, at a "regular" work bench, I'd go crazy (or make a jig).

Maybe he uses one of these...http://www.oemcycle.com/Item/product/900127996/_affidz_-dNXT (http://www.oemcycle.com/Item/product/900127996/_affidz_-dNXT)

I don't pull carbs enough to justify the cost.

I think the rubber of the OEM grips keeps reacting to the glue (2 different ones) because they get gooey and slip on the bar after a few months.
Cheap hair spray has always worked well for me, or nothing at all, if things are clean.  I do have grip heaters attached to throttle tube and handlebar.

Actually, that's what I did last night.  Who needs special grip glue when you have a can of trusty Aquanet?  I checked them this mourning and there is no slip.

Friday I finished putting all the plastic back on and took a short test ride.  Hard to tell how well it was running as the throttle cables were hanging up.

Saturday I re-routed the throttle cables, lubed them and cleaned up some of the wiring around the top of the forks.  Then I went on a 25 mile test ride ... WOW ... nice smooth and improved power and torque.

Today I put in a new piece of foam, cut to 1 1/2" in the air box and installed my Jim Snyder modified left front caliper on the rear for more braking power in the back.  I think the more I ride it the more I'm going to like my new Power Cams and carbs.   ;D ;D

Installed a Michelin Commander II on the rear in the middle of my trip to replace the Avon Venom that crapped out early. It developed an inch and a half long crack in a groove and an adjacent flat spot. Done(again) with Avons.

PS. So far I really like this Commander II over the Avon. Rides smoother, powers out of corners with a lot more stability than that crap Avon used to. $40 cheaper, also.

2: Pulled the Genmar peg lowering brackets and replaced with Murph's from parts bike. I like the position way better so far.
3: Pulled the Rifle off the parts bike installed it on DD to replace (beat to DEATH) stocker. I trimmed it to be about 1.5" taller than stocker. I cut off at least 4-5" PO was Amazonian I guess... I love it!!!!!! less back pressure and less buffering, not to mention if I have to look like t for any reason it's optically a MILLION times better than the stocker..
4: Pulled the Baker Air Wings off the parts bike and installed on DD. Not crazy about the look but that protect or pull air in. All good!
5: Mounted Gopro mount to the side fairing.
6: I ordered Dynabeads to balance front wheel. I hit a train track this week and there was a 1 foot square piece of asphalt missing next to the rail.... :yikes:

Today on my '86 I installed 2 12v accessory plugs 1 on the dash and 1 under the seat where someone had previously had wires run for possible the same thing. I also put on my new seat that I bought off of e bay. The factory seat cover had been repaired once already and was torn again, So instead of recovering it I put one from a 200 on it. I am very happy I did. It looks better and feels good.   :D  O I almost forgot I also received my Go Cruise this week, I put it on and tested it. Works very good for the simplicity of it.

We all know that the beads are just snake oil.  Please do me a favor and let me know what you think about them.  I have always used Dyna beads and have zero complaints.  My father bought some Counteract Balancing Beads and they appears to about half the size of Dyna's.  If the pour in any better I will start getting them.
I did find an awesome trick for beads just before the rally.  Normally I use my engraving tool to vibrate the beads through my 90* valve stems.  I couldnt find it this time so I filled up a 3" piece of hose with the correct weight of beads.  7-8lbs of air pressure and the beads went in like they were made of water.

Counteract beads are said to be electrostatic...so once the wheel balances its self...it remains balanced...we'll see...I'll let you know...not yet on the mounts...but it is still early...now I'm thinking about using the new Piaa 1100 LED lights instead of the Rigid LEDs we showed you last fall...decisions...decisions...

Wow, nothing since the 19th and the weekend went by.  The saga of my slow-motion engine replacement continues.  My BIL helped me set the engine in on Saturday.  Tightened all bolts on Sunday and also reinstalled the header and little coolant hose.  New o-rings and installed coolant logs, water pump, and thermo.  Monday - serviced the swing arm bearings, and all of the grease bolts, then installed the swing arm and all its parts to include the wheel and caliper (with new pads) - call this section done.  Fixed a broken upper fairing tab.  Hooked up the oil cooler, overflow tank, and radiator.  Put all new hoses on.  Put oil and coolant in with no leaks on the floor this morning (yeah!).  Tonight i'm hoping to finish (maybe not put on lower plastics) and ride to work Wednesday.  I have an advanced cornering clinic at MCB Quantico on Thursday - that is my goal.

Well it wasn't done in one day but, since I have been recovering from surgery to my left achillies tendon I had a little time to get some stuff done. In the last 4 months (actually last 4 weeks) I have put new tires, valve stems (from Murph) and bearings on the front and rear, installed new throttle cables to address a sticky throttle, removed/cleaned re-lubed the rear shock linkage and swing arm bearings and final drive splines, changed the rear shock oil with one of Murph's kits, changed the rear diff lube, checked the valves, checked/tightened the exhaust header bolts @ cylinder head, installed a new Interstate AGM battery, and inspected the air filter box for cracks. I primed the carbs and she fired right up and setteled into that familiar idle. Tomorrow (Sunday) I will do a short shake down ride, recheck all my work, and then give the girl a good bath. Oh, I forgot, when I had the front wheel off, I noticed the front pads looked a little thin so as soon as the new set arrives from Murph"s, she'll also get some new brakes.

Made and mounted a height adjustable screen (that I can do while riding), screen now sits 1/2" in front of the bodywork allowing that equalising flow up the inside too and I can adjust the height now so that the bottom edge sits just above the headlight 'sport' mode or high enough that the bottom edge sits 1" above the original mounts 'Touring' mode (this is a Givi Screen which I cut the 'flip' off).

Results are excellent, with the screen fully down the bike feels 'sporty' and the air just tickles my shoulders, also with the decreased frontal area acceleration and top speed are much better! With the screen fully up, even the missus gets no turbulant 'air' on the back.

Total cost to mod 6 euros :) with a pair of bearing drawer slides.

Here are the pics of my adjustable screen mod.

I used two drawer runners, (the type with ball bearings)
the first 3/4" were bent in a vice to allow the runners to follow the contour of the fairing.
first step is too remove the screen and the grill behind the clocks.
Next secure the two runners using the two bottom most holes on the runners (they should have a number of holes already in them) to the two bottom most screen mounting holes. (you may have to enlarge the holes on the slide slightly to allow for the standard screws), note the angle you will need to bend the slides to, then take them off and put the bottom ends in a vice (about 3/4 to 1" should do) with the slides fully extended, bend them back until the desired angle is acheived (I did this by feel, but I think about 15 degrees would do it). Once you're happy with this remount the slides to the fairing.
Once the slides are secure, measure the bottom most distance between the runners and the mount holes, I then fabricated an aluminium bar and drilled it at this spacing and then bolted it to the top most holes on the runners. Check to make sure you have a 90 degree angle between the runners and the bar, then tighten the bar tight. (I removed the set up again for the next step) using a piece of flat steel, at least 2mm thick, weld this in position just below the aluminium bar, then remove the aluminium bar.  Your frame is complete.
Remove the two bolts under the grill behind the clocks, now measure between the holes and a point approximately 1/3rd up the slides. Add about 1 1/2" to this measurement, now go find some thick steel wire (the sort used in shopping carts) cut two pieces the same length and weld them to the outer edge of the slides making sure that they point toward the holes (again remove the assembly before welding).
Next bend the 1 1/2" extra length of the wire so that it forms a u or closed circle around the bolt hole, these will be your stabilisers to brace the screen against the wind.
Find a knob with a short threaded end, drill and tap a small hole approx 1-2" above one of the wire supports. This is your adjustment lock, use a small rubber washer to help prevent the knob undoing itself.

Identify the top and bottom holes on the inner slide for your screen mounting, use a 8mm nut and screw, the nut will not fit into the inner slide, but line up the screw and tighten as much as it will go, this should draw the nut into the slide and capture it there.
Now we are ready to mount the screen,  Mount the screen to the bottom holes on the inner slides using the shorter standard screws ( a small spacer between the screen and the slide will help prevent the screw protruding too far into the slide. Now you can mark and drill the holes for the top mount in the screen (I used a dremmel) to line up with the captive nuts for the top mounts. Important: You will need a spacer at the top otherwise the slide will scrape down the inside of the screen when you raise and lower it, I used a pair of cavity wall rubber expanding screws (see pics) this gives about a 1" clearence between the screen and the slide at the top and has the beauty of being rubber mounted too.
Next gently slide the screen down, the bottom edge should not protrude further down than the bottom edge of the front grill, once the screen is in this position, cut out the sides of the screen to follow the profile of the mirror mounts (again see pics).

Last bit, you will need to cut two slots in the grill that goes behind the clocks, in order that the two wire braces are not in the way, (you will have to remove the two clock mounting bolts in order to get the grill back in position).

Finally, put all the bits back together, make sure it all moves freely and locks up on the knob, then go out and play.

Apologies if this is loooong winded, but it's a sort of step by step account of a seat of the pants experiment and no I'm a crap welder and not an engineer, but it works, that'll do me :)

I've heard of this a few times on the site.  Is this something that is an all around good idea?  in other words, is it a performance only item?  Does it hurt fuel mileage or anything else?  Should any rejetting be done (I have SISF's "power jet kit")?  Anything else to consider?

P/N please or year of bike to look for.  Thanks in advance!

You would have to talk to SISF if you were looking for info on what you could do with the stock carbs.
I have 36mm carbs from a 86 ZX1000R that I'm running on my bike now, and yes I would call it a "performance only" item.
I installed the carbs, along with Steve's power cams looking for more mid-range torque and increased top speed ... I've gotten both  ;D

The cost so far was going from 46 mpg to 40 mpg, but I'm still working on the fine tuning.  (the springs were part of the fine tuning)

Turbojoes 36's had really stiff springs designed for the zx1000 cams. The zrx springs are softer. there are no softer springs for the 32's that I'm aware of. Because the 32's are small for these engines, the slides pull up fine with stock springs, and I wouldn't recommmend changing them. HTH, steve

Repaired my broken left mirror and put that, and my Cee Bailey shield back on my bike.

Boy, do I like riding behind the CB compared to the 12 1/2" cut down stock shield.

Oh ya, it's nice to have both mirrors again too.  ;D

Well, I didn't do too much........ I installed the carbs that I got back from SISF, as well as the exhaust sprocket, and overflow tubes. I did a valve adjustment, installed new choke and throttle cables. Then, I installed my zzr shock and washed her.

Not today specifically, more like over a 3 day period - New oil, new filter, new air filter, new plugs, adjust the valves, adjust the valves again, panic that the timing had jumped, new cam chain tensioner by Mark Krieger, curse loudly at her every ten or so minutes, decide that a screw kit was in order (the bike was loved at one time that much is obvious but they were not good with screws) and finally decide that my old man is a hell of a lot better wrench than I will ever be. Next up the fun stuff test ride, beers aplenty and a bath for my mistress.

Found and fixed my coolant leak.

Seems the PO used the wrong length screws in the front underneath the belly pan, you know, the ones that if you use too long of a screw it goes through the bottom of the coolant reservoir, or puts to much pressure on it and it cracks.  Mine had a 2" crack.

He used some sort of sealer or glue and it held till about a week ago.

Cleaned it all up and re-sealed it with ABS cement.  We'll see how long this fix lasts.

Last weekend: Added 1.25" bar risers and had to adjust the fork tube height to do so.  Different feel, lighter and more maneuverable.  I need to take it to an empty lot and do some practice.

Last night: Made cuts in the mirror gasket and adjusted the mirror tension, reset the mirrors.  Got fed up with having to adjust them (esp. the right side) once or twice each ride!

Dug into my fan problem.  Riding with some slower friends earlier (*cough*mopeds*cough*) it got pretty hot during some stop and go but at least did not overheat, fan not coming on.  Tried the switch bypass trick, no go.  Dug into the fuses, everything in good shape there.  Started messing with the connector...aHA!  Loose connector.  Cleaned and had to bend up the snap lock for one of the female leads, but now the fan is back to fully functional.  I was worried it was going to be a full fan replacement.  I want to eventually make the change to the aluminum fan but for now its functional.  If they come soon, next will be cables and clutch work.

I replaced a defective Journey 890 Shinko with another 890 that was not out of round, that replaced a Michelin Commander II that was dangerous in the rain, that replaced an Avon Venom that was starting to come apart. In the last 3k miles, I've had four different rear tires on my bike. >:(

After de-badging the panels (on my dad's bike that i'm restoring) I painted all of the plastics black except for the main fairing that needs some cracks fixed first.  They'll still need clear coat before they are done.  Wow, was that some work.  It took all day.  At least clear coat will be pretty easy.

Adjusted valves, synced carbs, replaced plugs, replaced spark plug well, valve cover, and pickup coil gaskets, replaced front tire, installed Hot Grips, Buck's J box rebuild, Murph's petcock rebuild kit, replaced fuel filter, installed defective rear tire - doh! (Fingers crossed on replacement tire)

Continued the fine tuning on my 36mm carbs.

I moved a washer from above the c-clip's on the needle's, to below the clip's and got rid of a flat spot I was getting with slight throttle increases at 2000 rpm's.

I pulled the wheel with the defective tire today, feeling hopeful its replacement will arrive tomorrow. I was working solo and faced the struggle to raise and lower the wheel into place. I tried one of the tools of the trade and it worked perfectly  ;D

I also used my Dremel to cut a few inches from the rear fender. This allowed tire clearance with the center stand on a 1x rather than a 2x.

Got sick of looking at the cat crap brown/tan (aka "old man buick brown") of my '05.  What oh what were you thinking Mama Kaw?  Here is the result from starting last weekend.  Fixed a few cracks, replaced a couple missing tabs, painted and buffed everything out.  It feels faster now too!  Some black pinstriping and she will be all set!  Oh yeah, thanks Murph for the (as usual) extra fast delivery of the stainless steel fastener kit!   8)

Scheduled an appointment at a local performance tuning shop for Mon. 9:30am for some Dyno runs to get a baseline of where she currently stands.  (feels good by my "seat of the pants" dyno)

This will give me a direction to go over the cold months when I can do some bench tuning.  (have to take the carb bank apart to replace the fuel transfer o-rings)

Then in the spring I'll get to see how much closer to perfect I am.

Thanks F-106!  You were the inspiration for that added touch.  After reading your recent post and pics I figured as long as Connie was all apart, a little extra sanding and spraying would help to set her apart and look much nicer!  Alas, Mother Nature and Wisconsin are combining forces and soon it will be time to tuck her away for the winter again.  Black ice and high speed beef (deer) are more than I care to tangle with on two wheels..... ;)

More fine tuning on my 36mm carbs, cut two coils off my slide springs.

Initial result was increased throttle response, feels at least as good, or better than the stock 32's now.

Oh ya, on the 9th I did some Dyno runs to get a baseline on where I am now, so I can get some measurable data to work from instead of just my "seat of the pants" dyno.

My peak numbers were, 61.7 for torque and 95.9 for horsepower.

Still waiting for charts, printer cartridge was out of ink.

That is really a nice paint job!  Very nice color (not sonic).  I can't wait to get mine finished.  Mine will be black - all black.  Now i'm debating on painting the mirror fronts to be gloss instead of matte after seeing yours.

Thank you!  Not bad I agree for being done in the garage over the course of two weekends and less than $150 invested in primer, paint and clear.  I used the Colorite pre=mix stuff you can buy at pretty much any Advance Auto or Autozone.  Done with both a conventional and HVLP gravity feed gun ( I prefer the conventional FWIW).  Tank decals are from an ebay vendor; can't remember his user name, but he sells good stuff!
The inspiration for the painted mirror housings came from F106;  in some pics he posted of his bike after he painted his, I was amazed how much it set the bike apart and how much better it looked.  The effort required to do it is minimal too.  The most time consuming part is probably taping off everything you don't want painted.
All in all, I was nervous doing it, but figured as much as I disliked the '05 disgusting tan/brown/whatever it's supposed to be color Mama Kaw had as a leftover, I couldn't possibly make it look worse than it did!  I've done my fair share of body work before, sprayed primer, but never basecoat/clearcoat, or much less sanded and rubbed it out, but I smile (more) now when I see her and how much better it looks!

Sayyyy, that looks very familiar!  I was wrong in my post about the paint being from Colorite; it's from Dupli-color.  They have a burnt orange metallic that sounded interesting, but I couldn't really find enough pictures of that to see if I would like it or not, so went with their Deep Blue metallic.  Good luck with your paint job, whatever color you decide to go with!

That's the same paint I'm using.  I painted mine in the back yard.  I was going to use the lime-green but just couldn't do it.  So I used black and clear.  Pretty easy stuff to work with and dries quick.  Now I need to buff and polish it all.  I got some 2000 grit and a few different compounds.  Any suggestions or leasons learned from this paint?  I'l let it dry a few more weeks.
Title: Re: What'd you do for your Connie today?
Post by: throb on November 28, 2012, 06:54:56 PM
It was pretty straight forward as far as anything else I've watched being done.  I used 2000 grit as well.  Just keep it well lubricated with lots of water (with a few drops of dish washing detergent), light pressure and stay away from edges; you will cut through the clear on an edge faster than you can bat an eye.  Once you have the clear nice and smooth (if you look across it in the light, you can easily see any orange peel effect), it's time for rubbing compound followed by finishing compound.  The difference is in the cutting ability.  Rubbing compound will cut faster since it's "grittier".  I used a double action orbital (Porter-Cable) polisher to do the pieces after rubbing them out with the 2000 grit paper. It's a lot easier to go easy and have to sand a little more than it is to have to re-shoot the clear.  Take your time and I'm sure you will be pleased!   ;D   :chugbeer:

That's funny about the "lots of water and soap".  I wet sanded the large side panels standing in the shower in a bathing suit with them.  Everything else was in the kitchen sink with a towel as a pad.  I haven't tackled the main fairing, it needs repairs.  I just have a large scale 10-12" rotary buffer so I guess I will do it by hand - we'll see.  Drill pads are about useless.  Maybe Santa will bring me a smaller scale one.  Everything pretty much came out like glass except for the rearward portion of the front fender, it has orange peel.  I mat sand it and just clear coat that section so the fork tube and brace will obscure the finish line.

I'm still debating the mirrors.  They are a little faded so I need to decide matte or gloss black.
Title: Re: What'd you do for your Connie today?
Post by: connie_rider on November 29, 2012, 11:55:14 AM
Harbor Fereight has a pneumatic orbital (Jitterbug) sander that works well with water.
Think it cost about $35.00....

I used one when I did my bike.
Had a Cookie sheet with 1/4 of water in it to soak the paper. Used a water hose to trickle water onto the parts I was sanding.

If you do the mirrors, definitely use gloss black. They can be disassembled to make it easier to sand/paint them...

ride safe, Ted

Kinda like the question "why does a dog hang it's head outside the open window of a moving car?" (which translates to why do men ride motorcycles when a car would get you there more comfortably) to which the answer is "If you have to ask the question, you wouldn't understand the answer".

I got to meet, eat and ride with a couple of nice guys starting at The Grist Mill in East Troy, WI.  And after we ate, we rode around the area until I had to split off at Eagle.  I was having my kids over for my birthday/Packer party.

Nice riding weather today for December in WI.  55F !

And the Packers won!  and the Bears lost, and the Lions lost, and, of course, the Vikings lost.  So a good day all around.
