SGI motorcycle rate hike not definite, says Brad Wall

SGI says there are around 25,000 motorcycles in Saskatchewan, all of which would be effected by increased rates.
Premier Brad Wall says the proposed hike in SGI motorcycle rates will be up for discussion when session starts on March 4.
Wall says although nothing is confirmed, they will most likely be asking SGI to reexamine the proposed increase and implementation of motorcycle rates after overwhelming public resistance.
“We are hearing from a lot of people, not just riders but others. We want to get these things right so we may well reconsider this and ask SGI to have another go at it after we met as a caucus next week,” said Wall on a conference call with media on Friday.
Wall says it is a ‘slim’ chance the rates will stay as currently proposed.
The issue will be discussed in causes before the government formally approaches SGI to look at other options to the hike, like different kinds of licenses offered.
“We will meet again as a caucus and hear from MLAs. I was just saying today, that we are very open to that input and to the notion that we may have to ask SGI to have another look at this,” said Wall.
SGI proposed around a 70 per cent increase for motorcycle riders that would come into effect in August of 2013. The reason for the drastic increase was a $9 million gap between premiums and the amount paid-out for crashes and injuries.
“The objective here, closing that $9 million gap, is the right thing. … Is there something we could do or ask SGI to do to revisit how we are going to achieve dealing with this gap and look at perhaps more innovation,” said Wall.
There are roughly 25,000 motorcycles in Saskatchewan and around 90 per cent them are only registered during the riding season.
