One of the guys that I met at the 2005 rally had done an extensive write up on his adjustable windshield.  As I recall, it was a very nicely done project.  No idea where that might be now that the Grand Masters have pooched our home base.

The "Grand Masters" had nothing whatsoever with us loosing our home base; it was an unrecoverable crash plain and simple...

An adjustable windshield is the bomb!

Bill bought one from a fellow cogger here a few years back.  After a few years of extreme jealousy I purchased a set of Firecreek Slides and a Gustafsson windshield and Bill made one for my bike also.

Buffeting is gone!   ;D

I'm also interested in an adjustable shield.

Thanx.

My original plan was to take on this project of making a adjustable windshield and post pics along the way so everyone can see how problems I come up against get ironed out. It takes time to take pics and proceed ahead with the project. I didn't seem to get any response early on and then the thread went south with posts about the other site crashing. At that point I said "why bother wasting my time, no one is interested.
Now I have been getting PMs about the shield and how it adjusts etc. from people who are truley interested in a project like this.  The project is almost complete.  I will post a picture at the end for the people who asked.

I made my own manual adjustable shield about 10 years ago for my C-10. Took it off due to the high amount of particulate dust in the air here in SoCal. It was coating the shield surfaces between the two pieces.

Since then I have ridden a Honda ST, Honda Goldwing, Victory, and the Yamaha cruisers, all with electric adjustable shields. I would love to have one on my next bike, it may even be a purchase decision.

Would love to see your solution for the C-10.

I am using BMW mechanical arms. These arms are spring loaded, which hold the BMW windshield tight.  The windshiled came with mounting covers. I went with BMW arms because they tilt, go up, they are cheap and easy to find...... why reinvent the wheel? It's amazing how much the angle and up happens on the windshield, with such little movement from the arms.
When the BMW adjustable windshield came out, everyone laughed and though it was a gimick, Now most bikes have them.
As far as the BMW windshield goes, it has a nice flip vent in the bottom and a small flip at the top. Its from a R1150 RT.

The only hold up at this point is I cut down my Cee baily windshield(cee baily acts as a mounting base for the BMW arms) and I made small cuts on the lower bottom of the BMW windshield. I'm not sure on how to finish the edges off????
Any ideas on what to use to finish off cut windshield edges???? Im in a stall over the edges.

What do you mean by coating? I cut the heck out of my Cee Baily and there is not too much between them.... If anyone hasn't noticed, I'm not afraid to cut.

Regarding the edges:

When I make windshields for my bike, I cut the top shape with a fine toothed saber saw blade and then I do the final shaping with a random orbit sander. Finaly, I use progressively finer sand paper on a wood block to soften the edge radius. It looks pretty much like a factory shield’s edge when done.

Here is a tool that provides an alternative to sandpaper for edge work on your shields:

I’m interested to see what you come up with.

A tip I got from SiSF on finishing the edges, works quite well. Get the edge you want, then go over it LIGHTLY with a hand held propane torch, just enough to slightly melt the rough stuff. Leaves a nice, smooth edge.

When polishing dental acrylic for false teeth, I use foam sanding blocks & emery boards sold for acrylic nails.
What feels smooth to a tongue is pretty damn smooth.

I had a small set back..... The Cee Baily I was using as a base; cracked. Right down the middle.  I just made the final cut, placed it on the table, then as I was putting slight pressure on it, snap! I should have drilled a hole at the end of the cut, before cutting, not after.
Does anyone have an old, scratched or fogging, windshield they are not using? I need to cut it up and paint it black, so as long as the screw hole areas are good.

Takes time to post pics? Come on, you know you want to show us.
You asked if anyone was interested. I don't have a C-10, but that's doesn't mean I don't want to see pics. Really. If its so much trouble don't bother, but I'd like to see how it comes along.
I enjoyed your fairing pics, but still didn't reply to your thread. Many of us are just lurkers in some of the threads.

I would love to show you but, the cee baily I was using as a support base cracked during cutting. Now I only have a pile of parts to show you. If you like I can show or tell you my next move. Don't  laugh.... I'm fiberglassing a mold from my cracked windshield. Once the mold is done, I plan to make a fiberglass support. It was either fiberglass or I was going to put a piece of lexan in my wifes oven heat to 250 for 5 min and lay it over top of the cee baily. to make a new one... only problem is will it crack during cutting?
So fiberglass it is.
I've been busy with work and garage time is limited....  will try to get a picture of the adjustable part this weekend.

I, just like Mr. Pepsi and I'm sure many more, am a lurker. I would be very interested to see how it turns out, as well as some pictures of the process. Do you think a rifle base would be a good idea to use instead of a cut windshield or a fiberglass mold?

Cheers,
Pete

BTW, I LOVE your fairing!

I thought about a rifle base, but it still will have to be altered. It needs to be slightly higher on the outsides to find the arms.  Probably the best thing would be to buy a new tall windshield, cut it in half and use both halves for the job...............

Cold weather is no problem....... big as possible, but  in summer when your speed slows, you want the air. then back up on the hwy to kill the noise.

Sounds like a cool idea!
About 1/3 of the way thru I thought of suggesting a Rifle base, but you posted about that later...

Anyway, very interested to see how this all works out!  Could be a great addition!

Okay I made a fiberglass base. The windshield will be manual. Better control, light weight, and only 1.5 turns from bottom to fully raised.  It was a lot easier too!

I used a knob from mcmaster carr. 1.5 turns to fully up. alot of work left to do, but I wanted to show you guys my progress. This project is one of many I am in the middle of and progress is slow. My wifes projects seem to get priority. I sneak bike projects in when see is not paying attention.

If you look at the first picture, you can see little round circles....  I mated the fiberglass to to the cee baily.
1st- I scuffed up both pieces
2nd -I drilled little holes all over through the fiberglass/plexiglass(ceebaily)
3rd- I took a large drill bit and made bevels into the small drill bit holeson the plexi side. this allows fiberglass resin to flow through the plexiglass and make a larger diameter resin puddle on the plexi side of the adhered pieces. Now with these plugs dry and screws for windshield and adjusting arms are in place, it can't let go. (i hope)
The fiberglass was too flexible alone and the plexiglass might crack alone. The two together is like bones and ligaments. (i don't know what the heck I'm doing)
It is very rigid and will hold the adjusting arms.
I am going to try and paint it tomorrow after work.

One minor detail............... I haven't done any road tests yet :-\
 I'm very interested too!
Right now at the lowest postion the BMW windshield that fits the arms (with cover plates too) sticks up a little on the high side. I still look over the shield, but I want air for slower riding. It goes up to the moon. So the high side is not a problem. The angle also changes, so I don't know what to expect. Maybe it will end up acting like it did on the R1150Rt that it came from, but I never even seen a R1150Rt in real life. So???

So would it work ok using a shield as a base, or maybe a modded Rifle base, or do you think it needs to be fiberglass?

Also, once you get it done, Im sure you will, but please post pics of the range of motion!

Just so I have it straight, the shield and adjusting gear is from a BMW R1150?
How hard is that to find?

Any idea if there are other similar systems that will work?
Im guessing its more of a trial and error type of thing, or buy it and try it...

If I had a close up look at a rifle, I would have made a judgement call. But since it needed support added at the top edge, I didn't want any splice work in that area. Plus I started to think about cost...If it all ended up in the trash.
Yes they are from BMW. I bought the adjuster off e-bay $100 w/ motor... ending up tossing the motor.
$200 for the windshield..only because it came w/ mounting cover plates to look finished.
I had no idea if it would fit. I just spun the wheel.

In the down postion, there is a huge air gap under the windshield... see 1st pic.

I'll get back about the ride.
Title: Re: Adjustable windshield UPDATED w/ PICS on Page 3
Post by: DarkKnight on June 20, 2011, 04:04:15 PM
Ok! took it for a test ride. I seem to be getting more air in the lowest postion. There is a solid stream coming up under the windshield, but only really felt with a hand, it's hard to tell with a helmet(seems to be more air all around)
When I get to 65mph I start to hear buffeting while in the lowest postion. I turned the shield all the way up and noise is completely gone.  My old Cee Baiily that was cut down made buffeting around 40 mph and never stopped. buffeting allt he way up to 240mph. ;) You had to lay on the tank for sound relief.
I am very happy with it.
There was one slight problem that I didn't anticipate. When going above 50 the shield has to be over compensated going up, because it wants to relax back down. If I go fully up, no problem, it likes it there. The adjuster has a worm gear, so I'm not sure how it rolls back when going half way up.  The adjuster is spring loaded with springs pulling toward down postion, so this and the wind and the vibration makes the shield want to go back a little from where I set it.
I really don't see this as too much problem, because I will most likely go for fully up or fully down. Either look over or look through, but why look through the edge?  Either get busy livin or get busy dying!
